    This is SO TRUE - in med school, I once made the mistake of making too many flashcards to memorise facts, apart from the basics that must be memorised. Asking questions, understanding underlying concepts, and trying to explain as if to a 5-year-old or in front of others - that COMBINED with active recall is how I managed to get better at recalling AND understanding info

  • @e.t9403
    @e.t9403 Pƙed 2 lety +173

    My study technique in med school :
    1st view : attending the lecture or reading the lecture thoroughly, googling want I don't understand and making little notes or drawings on the pages to understand it better.
    2nd view : reading it for a second time but now instead on focusing on understanding every sentence I try to understand the big picture. On a piece of paper I make schemas or plans to try to understand how everything is connected. I add to that piece of paper the stuff I find difficult to memorize/understand fully, and lists that I need to find a mnemonic trick for. I end up reading some past tests to see what's going to be asked from us and if something isn't already in my draft, I add it
    3rd view : i take the draft from last session + the lesson and I make flashcards of these
    Usually I do each view on a week so 3 weeks after the start of the semester I start having flashcards.
    Then everytime I'm losing time (public transportation, waiting for a meeting) I do those flashcards.
    Before exams :
    I start with doing a session of past exams the way it would be on the big day.
    Then I reread every lecture (from the one I didn't know well to the one I did know well)
    Again exam type questions
    Rereading those I didn't know well and finding ways to fully memorize or understand them (making lists, drawings, mnemonic tricks, anything that works)

    Well, active recall and spaced repetition works in subjects such as History, Biology and Chemistry ( subjects that mostly need memorization ) but it will not work in Physics where understanding to the fundamentals is everything.

      Active recall in biology and chemistry only works for isolated facts, they're so content heavy that if you were to solely rely on active recall and spaced repetition you'd be overwhelmed with flash cards or however you choose to actively recall. Understanding is needed in those 2 subjects as well so that you don't need to memorise as much stuff

    • @nilendrasingh6640
      @nilendrasingh6640 Pƙed 2 lety +1

      @Xavier Dutton Yes there is a lot of understanding required but I am talking about memorization or the facts. You can't solely rely on active recall first you need to understand the information.

      @@Raphael_.- I mean biology has A LOT of facts that can be memorised with anki really well. And the way I study(biology student here) subjects like biology, biotechnology, microbiology is that I just make anki cards regularly and do them and then when I finish my exam I archive them so I don't have to go through it anymore because those won't be on my next exam anymore. That way I avoid having thousands of cards to do per day. I think anki is a great tool to memorize especially for those who have a problem with memory, but it is a committment doing them every day.

  • @ArjunKelaiya
    @ArjunKelaiya Pƙed 2 lety +14

    Understanding comes first before remembering, that goes without saying, and without giving it a gimmicky marketing name! I don't understand the urge to make everything granular, that ultimately leads to loosing big, simple and important concept, i.e. "understanding" in this case. Understand however you want!!!
    Another important thing is to separate active recall from flash cards (anki, remnotes, etc). Those are just a subtype of active recall techniques. Failure to understand this and sticking with anki/remnote without having an aptitude or personal desire to study that way, will lead to frustration.
    I understand well, use active recall and spaced repetition, but I don't use anki or remnote or any other flashcards. I use teaching (to self or others) as an active recall technique to hone my understanding and memory. Some people, who have done exceptionally well on standardised exams, practice active recall and testing their understanding of the subject, by exclusively doing practice questions.
    Bottomline: Flashcards (anki, remnotes) are NOT THE answer to all your learning woes. Understand the topic/concept first and try to memorise it by whichever technique you are comfortable with.

    FINALLY, SOMEONE MADE A VIDEO. They are NOT the end-all, be-all study techniques. I have been trying to tell people this for years while they all struggle in medical school. I've been telling them they're in an echo chamber with all these "influencers" telling them they'll solve all their problems. Each one is making yet another video on the same thing. No one is being creative or unique, just rehashing the same things they've seen someone else talk about. How many of them even read the research on "spaced repetition" and "active recall?" Or did they all just post article titles and say, see-- research, it exists. All the advice revolves around Anki and other flashcard apps. The problem is it's random. None of that forms a complete story or provides enough detail. I kept telling people they were wasting their time putting so much into finishing their billion flashcards a day. They ended up failing and had to repeat the year! Likewise, the "just do more questions advice" that people give an example of "active learning," is also terrible. You have to know when to use it. Learning from doing questions is so highly ineffective. Questions are designed to test understanding and show that you don't know something. These aren't questions you think about that propels you forward in your learning as you look for the answer, they are test formated questions. You need to understand the topic first and then test on that subject. One issue is nothing provides you with these check-understanding types of questions. It's always random and can never be tailored to the topic someone is learning. You go onto UWorld, and you can only apply so many filters. It's inefficient to test you on specific issues. If you study heart failure, you then need questions on heart failure, and only then do you make flashcards to help reinforce the learned material. Acquire general working knowledge > Check understanding > Reinforce learned material.

    I agree with this video so much. It also doesn’t help that school doesn’t really help us on that regard. In my opinion, there are 4 main facets of school:
    1) some form of morality
    2) providing information
    3) teaching us how to learn/study
    4) teaching us how to apply
    Most schools, in my opinion fail some of 2 and the entirety of 3&4. If the whole point of school is to help students to learn how to apply knowledge, why rely on memory. I would bet my life that every student has experience where you’re doing a test or exam with a question that they knew how to perfectly explain minus a simple detail. If in the workplace, people are able to consult with supervisors or the internet, why doesn’t school at least try to evolve so to speak. For calculation-heavy subjects, i’m sure most students would prefer slightly harder questions if it meant they weren’t struggling to remember so many formulas. For like more wordy subjects, even so much as a list of simple definitions would help eg. I do economics and let’s say I forgot how the PED(Price Elasticity of Demand) is to be applied. If the definition of elasticity was given “the responsiveness of the percentage change of one factor to another’s percentage change”, it would greatly increase the chances of me being able to apply it to the question given.

    I felt so smart when I correctly predicted the reason why active recall and spaced repetition is not enough. You also need to understand the concepts. If you don’t understand the concepts then you’re not gonna do well on most of the critical thinking questions that are on the exam, in college that is. In high school you can get away with just memorizing the details

      This is so true, especially so for me. I’m a social sciences student and memorising facts are important only if they serve to answer a question, and that requires understanding to conduct critical thinking. I’ve decided to move away from remnote to plain old world as a result as it makes me focus on memorising rather than making connections.

    Active recall is just one aspect of learning
 retrieval( I suppose remembering, but this simplifies the process too much).
    To truly learn well, you should instead focus on encoding, the process of building long term memory storage of short term memory chunks.
    If this information is encoded well, it will be easier to retrieve, and you can enforce the memory with spaced repetition by actively recalling it
 not read reading your notes.
    Reading something you’ve seen before induces a feeling of familiarity, which can create an illusion of competence and mastery. Flash cards place information into your working memory first, so this is not a very effective learning technique, but the repetition works for some people. This flash card technique is called over-learning. Again it’s mostly helpful for reinforcing information that is already in LMT, or rather information that has reached LMT.

    Hey, whoever is reading this...please help me with your ideas on this problem :-
    Topic - In spaced repetition
    Subject - the problem with me is not that I don't recall anything...I do, but I don't recall all!
    but that is not the main issue -
    issue is say in a topic there are 15points
    now the points which I am not able to recall in 1st repetition
    I won't remember them in the 2nd one either
    and same points I won't remember in 3rd either
    ex. I was not able to get 3rd nd 5th point
    therefore I won't get them in subsequent revision as well
    This also happens with certain topics (as whole)
    I won't recall that entire topic in any revision
    ex. of thinkers or quotes or historians or any such overly factual
    What to do in such scenario, how to beat this issue and recall all, If not all than atleast 90-95% of all...
    as 3-4 points in each topic is too much gone in 300-400 topics.
    Please do share what you do, thanks a lot for yout time!

    Actually you need to memorise the basics first. For instance, we all memorise abcdef.... there is no meaning to them. So in the same way, new terminologies must be memorised. For instance, the word kinematics in physics needs to be memorised. But an easier way to remember is to associate kinematics with commonly used words that one already know. I am already familiar with motion and study and link kinematics with study and motion. Now I associate kinematics with the study of motion. To further deepen my understanding of kinematics, I extend the study of motion with speed, velocity, distance, displacement, acceleration. By establishing more words to kinematics, I have further deepen my knowledge about kinematics.
    I think learning is like a tree. You need to figure out how to branch out your knowledge. Recalling and using knowledge is like nourishing that knowledge so that it remains energised. If we stop using certain knowledge in our brain, they will weaken with time and ultimately be completely forgotten.

    I love the idea behind the app and really want to use it, but image occlusion is just too important to give up. The cost really don't seem to outweigh the benefits of switching from anki to this app. Anki is free but to get the same functionality we have to pay every month?
