Enid’s a hugger. Enid also respects others are NOT huggers. Wednesday steps back to not be touched or to get a bit of personal space and Enid acknowledges that without making Wednesday feel bad about her boundaries. Respect.

@@rexibhazoboa7097 Yeah I made a bit of a ranty comment about how I didn't like the hug being returned, 'cause it genuinely seems like Wednesday doesn't enjoy hugging up until then, and it kinda undermined that. Also, kudos to the gorgon dude for just being honest with Enid as to why he wasn't there, even though that must've been deeply embarrassing for him. He isn't afraid to be vulnerable on that one: This frankly wouldn't have happened for male characters in the early 2000's either, unless they were gay. And then they get upset with themselves or upset with you because you didn't realize the subtle hints are being dropped. And they assume that you do realize it and just don't return the feelings.

I love how a bunch of characters in the show deal with Wednesday's general personality. There are moments when they give her pushback and she sometimes does need to hear that. But there are also moments where especially Enid recognizes who Wednesday is and she just works with it. She doesn't try to give Wednesday one of those "makeover scenes" they often have in shows, Wednesday is never forced to wear things she doesn't feel comfortable in, Enid gives her a Snood in her signature colors, she doesn't try to force Wednesday into a hug and doesn't get mad at her for not being a hugger.
Also, despite how the relationship went later on, I loved it when Tyler planned a picnic in a crypt for Wednesday. Same thing with the birthday party for Wednesday in the crypt. Even when she didn't really react to the party, I still love how much effort they put into making something for her that's personalized. There's just so many cute scenes where they all accept Wednesday for who she is as long as she isn't actively hurting someone or something and I love it.

I really liked the whole ending sequence with Enid walking out of the forest, I thought Emma Myers really showed her acting skills in just this short clip alone. You can see the shock in her eyes, then when she asks where Wednesday is and nobody says anything you can see her backing away a little looking around as if she was frantically searching for her, because you can see her thought process "are they not saying anything because she's dead?". Then when Wednesday and Bianca show up and she sees people walking up to them she takes these few steps forward and you can see at first that she is a little hesistant, probably because it's dark and foggy and she doesn't really know who it is yet. But when she realizes it is actually Wednesday she immediately runs to her, because in this moment she is just so relieved that her friend actually came back. What I loved about the hug scene, aside from literally everything about it, is that when Wednesday backs away, the look on Enid's face (to me anyway) read "I'm sorry, I know you don't hug, but I'm just so relieved you're OK that I couldn't help it" but also acceptance again when she thinks Wednesday is pulling away to establish distance.
When actually Wednesday, at least how I interpretated, it was pulling back to see for herself that Enid was OK too.
Also I cannot overstate how amazing the acting between both Emma Meyers and Jenna Ortega is in this scene through using just their expressions and eyes.

She's willing to help Wednesday despite being visibly uncomfortable. Even if she's being manipulated (and knows it) and goes into a perilous situation to help her friend. She even proves the manipulation wasn't necessary. All Wednesday had to do was ask, and despite the violation of trust, she still cares enough not to leave her friend in danger. • @TheDrexxus
    @TheDrexxus Pƙed rokem +12

I was actually really annoyed that Enid finally transformed into a werewolf at the end.
I've seen this trope done a bunch in shows where you have this "late bloomer" kind of character with all this willy nilly "will they wont they" get their powers, and it always ends the same way, with them acting like they don't care and don't need it and are fine without it and then they get it at the very end when they need it to pull off the big save and big win at the end. The reason I dislike it so much is because it feels like they didn't actually learn anything or grow at all because their powers that they said they were totally fine without are what is NEEDED to save the day at the end and they are super stoked they got their powers too.
I think it is a much more profound story if they NEVER get their powers. If the threat of "it may not happen" is actually followed through on. While I can think of many characters who follow the trope of "maybe/maybe not get their powers then gets it and saves the day", I can only think of ONE SINGLE character that goes through the same experience but never develops their power and actually, truly does learn to accept not having it and never getting it. That character is Scootaloo from Friendship is Magic.
She had smaller, underdeveloped wings and while it was never expressly stated it was a disability, thats basically what it was. Throughout the entire series run, people wondered if she would ever get the ability to fly or not, because she couldn't, and so many people wanted that for her so badly, especially since she also wanted to fly so badly. But she never did. She is the only character i'm aware of who actually went through something like this.
I guess this trope bothers me a lot because it does remind me of disability so much. Writers love to try to turn disabilities into "strengths" or giving you extra powers or that you spontaneously get over your disability and are then fully functional, etc. It just irks me to no end because that isn't what happens most of the time. And you aren't learning to live with it by constantly yearning for it and then suddenly getting it when the plot sets it up for the payoff.
And in THIS show, they frame it like sexuality almost, even saying "conversion camp" and stuff like that, implying her mother somewhat rejects her because she "isnt right" and is trying to fix her. So the show is basically saying her problem is that she is gay, then she finds out she was actually straight the whole time and its framed as very celebratory and the happy ending because its what literally everyone wanted all along. Whether its sexuality or disability, it just feels really wrong and bad to me that the show is basically saying theres something wrong with her, then suddenly shes instantly cured and now shes normal and totally fine.
Also, consider Enid's mother. She's going to be so much warmer toward her now and proud and etc. I think Enid's character and story would've been FAR more interesting if she had never fully wolfed out, and she just had to learn to live with that, and her mother had to get over her issues too to learn to love her daughter for who she really is instead of who she wanted her to be. That story would've been more profound and interesting, to me at least.

I don't like being touched by strangers, so I try to us body language to show that. Saying such tends to make things more awkward(in my experience, at least). Once I get to know someone physical touch is okay, a hug here and there, but I prefer not to most of the time.

I loved when Enid has that moment when she’s fed up with Wednesday pushing her away...it felt like the moment my hope starts to leave and depression starts to set in. When I’m depressed I forget what hope and joy and positivity looks like and when I see it in that clouded state, my depression lies and says it’s not real. I start to view the Enid version of me as silly and naive and a joke bc that’s how so many people have tried to make me feel about that side of myself and I start to devalue that very important part of myself-she saves me. We need the Enid’s of the world and ourselves. They keep us going. They are what keeps the good in the world and they create more of it. Watching this show was really eye opening.
Edit: last thing, it also makes me realize that my Wednesday/depression/ptsd side comes out to try to protect me from more harm when I meet my final straw as my Enid self. And that I was debating with myself on whether to pick it up and eat it or not. Would it make me sick would it give me super powers. I remember debating with myself in my head. To eat the sugar cube or not. My kid self That rarely got to have any sweets or treats, Strongly wanted to eat the sugar cube. My responsible follow the rules self. Was saying no because it was on the floor. I think I entered up picking it up and throwing it away.

And I looked around at the other kids and I saw their eyes and some of them are talking and I was wondering if they thought too. Did they think and hear themselves like I did. And then I tried imagining myself behind their eyes. Does their thoughts sound like mine too or do they sound like their own voice. And I just remember that being like an epiphany moment kind of thing. I was 5.
But then we had to lineup to be shown another place in the school. I might have actually eaten the sugar cube I can't remember if I did or not. It Was an intense inner battle. That became completely meaningless and unthought of as soon as I became aware that I was thinking and the other people might think too. It was a thorough distraction from the sugar Cube I must say.

I love Enids nails in this!!! The characters are so well written and the actors are the icing on the cake. What a great production and I really enjoyed the show and the perspective it took. Feels like I've been waiting for show like this for centuries!

Ms. Dow, you are very gifted at non-verbal communication.
Posture, hands, affect, facial expressions, eyes - the whole sphere integrated.
80+ percent of good, honest communication comes not from the words we use, but the way we use non-verbal cues.
I absolutely did not realize until I was listening to one of your videos when I was cooking a meal. I glanced over at the video and immediately the point you were talking about became immediately clearer just by body posture, etc.
You are an examplar of very clear non-verbal communication.

It‘s honestly crazy how opposites attract, and even help each other.
I‘m generally a very quiet and anxious person, and I don‘t really like leaving my comfort zone unless I absolutely have to. My girlfriend is someone very loud and bubbly and maybe a little crazy, and whenever I‘m around her, it‘s so much easier for me to find that new, bigger bubble of comfort and do things I probably never would‘ve done without her.
I just find it interesting to look at the brain work and thought dynamics between those relationships, because you can look and see how someone changes around different people and in different settings. I find it absolutely fascinating and so cool how our minds sort of automatically tell us, “Hey, different place, different people, so different act.“
Unless, y‘know, you‘re Wednesday Addams and literally couldn‘t care less.

Your remark on empathetic people being able to give more thoughtful gifts is spot on. From gifts to secret santa poems, I even written one for a total stranger once as a girl at this art center whom I followed cartoon drawing classes with didn't knew what to come up with for her classmate. I'm good at figuring out what someone likes and taking it into consideration.

Hearing Enid described as a puppy, I was struck not only by how apt that comparison is but also by how the feline imagery that Enid ironically applies to herself actually fits Wednesday much better in juxtaposition. Dogs typically wear their friendliness on their proverbial sleeves and offer it quite freely, whereas cats, at least superficially, tend to be more aloof. Of course, cats can be warm and affectionate as well (I'm a cat person myself), but they often make their owners earn that affection and are more selective about when and with whom they show it. Wednesday, with her general stoicism and slowness to trust anyone enough to show even a modicum of emotion (besides anger), may be an uncanny albeit extreme personification of a cat. Hell, even those she cares about aren't always spared from getting metaphorically scratched or bitten. She just won't let her teeth or claws go as deep as she would if she were dealing with a true enemy or even a mere stranger. So basically what we have here is a dog and a cat being thrown into a room together, and we as the audience are treated to the slow burn of these two very different creatures bonding despite the psychological obstacles!

Well not all dogs are fast to trusting such as the German Shepherd which is quite a bit slower to truly trusting someone then most dogs but once they do they are fiercely loyal and the only real way they’ll stop being loyal is if they feel there owner isn’t being loyal to them.
It’s one of the biggest reasons why I like German Shepherds a lot along with the fact of how intelligent they are which makes every moment with them more enjoyable because they are very curious.

15:00 that whole scene hit hard. Like I’ve never been to conversion “therapy” but it reminded me of my relationship with my father, and how he refuses to accept me despite knowing for years that I’m queer.
At this point I’m mostly numb to it, but there’s times I get jealous, because all I got was avoidance and intolerance from my father, and not comfort and acceptance.
Ig im more like Wednesday in that fact lol- like I don’t trust many easily because I’ve been hurt emotionally by my family so much that I repressed it.
Like- not that I don’t care about others, but the fear and trauma I have from my other relationships makes it hard to want to know other people.

Georgia, I just wanted to say how happy I am that you're doing this series. I started watching you when you covered the Legend of Vox Machina, and I just adore your content. I can't wait to see the rest of them! I felt a little lost with Xaiver's character, so I hope to see something with him in the future. Keep up the great work!
