- Welcome back to another video. This time we finish the Picador Disc Sander that was started in the last video. Taken a while to get back to this as I've been waiting for parts in the post!
Started off with the motor restoration. This motor is an early Bull Motor out of the Ipswich factory. From the information I've found online the company stopped using this design and the brass fixings sometime in the late 30's, around the time they were bought out by E.R & F Turner. They made this style of motor from the early 20's but I'm not 100% sure when they stopped so we'll just go with 'Vintage' :D! I made a small change to the motor by adding sealed bearings, for the usage this is going to see from me there's no need to have greased bearings, these are more suited to long term constant running, I imagine I'll be using it for around 30 minutes at a time so these bearings should be fine. I have kept the grease fittings in case I decide to go back to open face bearings but I would need to source some seals for them if I did go back, plus they look nice and shiny!
The base has been given a quick overhaul, back to metal, a few minor modifications and repainted. In all honesty the welding on this base is terrible and would probably benefit from a brand new base being fabricated, but my welding set up is pretty dismal atm and even though I am a qualified welder I doubt very much I'd be able to make anything of high standards with the kit I own! Maybe in the future when I decide what I/m going to use this extra pulley for...
I also upgraded the sanding plate, I had an absolute nightmare getting the old sanding disc off, the glue was ridiculously strong! So I've added a loop and hook base to the plate, now I can just swap sanding discs with ease :)
This has turned out really nice IMO, and it's going to be a really useful addition to my shop, I'm already eyeing up what projects I can throw at it!
Disclaimer: I have to add this. I'm not a professional, I'm just some guy messing around with old tools. If you don't know what you're doing don't do it! If you hurt yourself copying me, tough shit, don't blame me! This isn't an instructional video and I often do things that aren't exactly gonna win me any health and safety awards. If it feels dodgy when you're setting something up then it's probably gonna end in pain, so think twice about how much you like being able to count to ten on your fingers before pressing a switch.
Very good restoration. The Picador parts were in good condition so a cleanup and polishing was plenty. I'm glad you could save the vintage motor, although when I saw the rusty water in the case I wondered if the better idea would be to replace it with a modern motor. Your restoration turned out well, and I'm glad the motor is providing good service. The original builder of this sander did a good job. I think he would be happy with your restorati on. Regards from USA.
I have one of these and they are such a great bit of kit. Thanks for the great resto.
Great restoration, lovely machine and that motor is a thing of beauty now 👍 👍
Sparky 415 Everythings Adjustable I prefer the motor to the rest of the machine tbh, proper hefty old piece of kit and it runs smooth as silk! If I see any more Bull motors I’m snapping them up!
Yeah. That motor is gorgeous.
It Looks as though the tube on the top is for lubrication. However, when you replaced the bearings, they appear to be sealed bearings.
Love the size of that sanding disc!
Nice refurbishing project. Seems this one spins clockwise. Most of them that I have seen turn counter-clockwise. But it works and you can adjust for that clockwise spin... Thumbs Up!
Gary Mucher I can just swap the red wires on the motor to change rotation direction. I’m guessing whatever the extra pulley was for used to need the motor to turn that direction to run it! There is a couple of studs on the right hand side where something else used to be attached to the frame, no idea what but I have ideas for what I can add on to it...
@@sparesorrepair9118 It really isn't a problem. It is just that you will be sanding most everything on the right side of the disk. Nothing wrong with that. I think most spin CCW because they have a threaded on disk plate. And spinning that way constantly tightens the plate as you use it. But if I remember, yours goes on with a set screw and there for the direct of spin isn't important. IDK JMHO
Thanks!
absolutely brilliant job. Love the choice of colour (gunmetal grey?) for the motor to accentuate the brass. Looks like a very useful bit of kit. Sorry, but i didn't think the wiring harness did the rest of the restoration justice, but overall an excellent restoration.
You've got yourself a fine tool which should last a very long time. Thanks for the video's.
Hi there! Have been enjoying your videos, and hope you are well. I think it's really cool that this was a "kit" company, so many years ago, I am only recently seeing such things again, primarily in the maker space, like 3d printers.
I have sander envy! Really good job, and nicely paced video. Thanks for sharing
-- Constructive criticism again... I've mentioned this before on one of your other videos but I'll mention it again. You've got to use anti-seize on your threads lad! Trust me when I say that someday you'll thank yourself because if you keep this equipment long enough, you'll undoubtedly be disassembling it again - at least partially. Disassembling items that were assembled with anti-seize on the threads of bolts and screws are a snap when it comes to taking them apart. It's like night and day. Best wishes!

Verry nice restoration. Arent you a little mad when you see the disk not running straight ?
I think its not easy with a D shape axle to improve.
I think it’s the extra pulley that’s pulling it out of line! There’s a very small ridge on the inside when the two parts are together. The motor runs true and the disc is perfectly flat and level. It doesn’t even show as out of square when you measure the whole of the disc against the sanding plate though so it doesn’t bother me too much 😂
New bearings... me love you long time...
Superb work, very well done Sir! Greetings from Southport.
Excellent rescue/restoration,well done. Stay safe. Cheers.
That is a fantastic job looks amazing and works well thanks for sharing your time and skill and remember#stay safe and make. 🍺🍺🍺👍👍👍
Yeh, been looking forward to this.
Donna Crozier did you get round to tackling that vice?
No sadly world events have stopped me. I only got as far as ordering some MC-51 rust remover. Can’t wait to get back to setting up my workshop. I’ve got a few other tools I found during the clean up that I’m going to work on too.

especially with older electric motors I would always test the windings with an insulation tester (megger)
and not with a continuity test !
I’ve been keeping an eye out for a nice (cheap 😂) meg get to add to my testing kit, I know multimeter tests aren’t perfect but they generally give you a good idea whether you’re wasting your time or not!
top job
should be sanding on the downward stroke left side of disc also the wheels out of true
Awesome restoration
Well done. :) Love seeing your vids. Love the end result.
Keep 'm coming.
Stay safe, and healthy.
Excellent resto. What is the purpose of the brass bar on top? Grounding? And have you considered getting the platter trued?
Another great resto. Thanks for the ride. As others have asked, what is the brass tube about? I figured lubrication but it doesn't really make any sense the way it's located. And the bearings are sealed so is it an air vent? I didn't see a zerk fitting for grease and now it wouldn't be needed. So, please explain.
The original bearings weren’t sealed so would have needed greasing occasionally. These motors were intended for industrial use so would have been running pretty much constantly in their intended application! I decided to replace with sealed bearings as it’s only going to get occasional use nowadays, kept the greasing tubes because they look cool 😂
@@sparesorrepair9118 I figured that was the reason. Thanks for the quick reply. I'm really enjoying all your videos and have subscribed and "thumbs up'd" them all.
Anyone else disappointed there hasn’t been new videos in 2 years.
Great Resto Mate, Can't wait to see your up and coming vids :-)
Hello, My name Ivan, Brazil. Extremely old Policarte/Sander. the aluminum plate cannot identify the manufacturer. here do not have the replacement bearings. can you help me? Note was manufactured there!
Magnifica restauración. Un saludo
Been waiting for this. Like the cheeky modern upgrades to make it more useable. Well worth the skin off your fingers eh! Lol.
Nice restoration... !!!! did you manage to balance the straighten the wobbling disc?
Amazing!!
Great work but my probleme is the paint ( sooo bad you must change the method you done great job great effor so you must complet your job perfectly good luck my freind big fan)
What primer would you recommend for Iron??
A Bag Of Cats what sort of iron, railings? In all honesty I’d skip the primer for stuff that’s not likely to get a runaway piece of wood smashed into it when I lose concentration 😂! Hammerite is generally extremely good at sticking to steel/iron without primer, galvanised or aluminium I would always use the special metals primer though as it just flakes off without
Excellent job on the restoration! One thing though...that disk needs to be balanced a bit more. Too wobbly as it is, right? :) You got a subscriber in me!
Where did you find the adhesive hook sheet? Links please!
It was just an eBay purchase, search for self adhesive hook and loop adaptor 👍
@@sparesorrepair9118 cheers I couldn't find one I had the wrong key words !
good job👍🏻
Two minutes of video and over five minutes of commercials. I don’t think so!!!
Thanks for highlighting that, I only have skippable ads set at start and finish as default normally because I’m not a fan of them either, changed the settings, must’ve been a CZcams update around the time it was uploaded or something!
Unsubscribing. You tube shut down comments on the White House channel but will not do the same to biden, political discrimination is wrong and I am preparing to leave you tube. I have enjoyed you videos and wish you well in the future
