Did a front wheel bearing on a Ford Transit van belonging to an idiot, the actual taper roller bearings were broken up some had welded themselves onto the stub axle! had to grind them off before putting the new ones on. Don't ignore the warning signs people!

Much respect for this guy. great mechanical knowledge, great ability to teach his knowledge, and most of all he is proof that no matter what government's flag is on our post office, all car guys are the same. He looks about my age, survivors of the end of the cold war. government tried hard to train us to dislike each other, but enjoying motors and cars just shows we are the same. Keep going, we need these.

I can tell you what happens when a rear wheel bearing seizes on a '67 Mustang with the common 8" rear end. The axle shears in two instantly just outboard of the bearing, and the wheel, axle flange, brake drum, bearing and a little bit of the axle all come off as one piece, hit the concrete barrier and bounce off into the median. If it's dark, the brake backing plate gives you a fireworks show until you come to a stop.

Grease loaded up with Chemico coarse grinding paste... especially on brass or bronze bushings... munch munch munch seize :P Funniest thing I had with a wheel end was driving down the motorway in a MK3 Ford Capri with the 3 litre engine up front, hits a pothole and the back passenger side really banged and my mate says to me "That's funny" so I asks whats funny, he says "you don't usually see a wheel cruising past just like that" and he was right, my wheel was overtaking us as the wheel studs had shorn clean off, then gravity took over and the back end dropped onto the drum gouging a great big trench in the tarmac and fighting it into the hard shoulder. Was with the AA back then and this when they still did good fixes and the bloke turned up with a new set o' studs, knocked the old ones out, I sent me mate to recover the wheel and before long we was back on the road.

Water destroys bearings, this much I know for sure. My father in law had a few wheel bearings go bad after running his truck through swampy water, and I have had bearings for accessories fail after I had a water pump that leaks down into the other bearings below it washing the grease away. So I guess I'd say no grease, liquids, then dirty grease would be the failure order (I know liquid's not technically part of the test but it trashes bearings).

lol as soon as he said we'll fit one dry i remembered doing my first set, totally forgot to pack the bearings...... they blew up 10 feet from the driveway lmfao. The originals fell apart inside the hub and marred the shit out of the axle stub, i had to make some spacers to get the innner race to sit in the proper spot on the taper.... in other words, if you have these style of wheel bearings, you don't want to let them fall apart... once they do the spindle is ruined and replacements are almost impossible to find or are very expensive.

I once had a car where I suspected that the bearing lost its grease. It was sealed and I couldn't regrease. So I drove with it like that fpr 5000km and nothing happened. In the end it was a car for 50€ that got me around summer with working A/C. On highway speeds that bearing was squealing considerably and constantly. In construction zones when going 90km/h in heavy traffic all construction workers always looked at me and already 150-200m in advance. In the end the engine blew without any mechanical noises in advance and it went to the scrapyard. The engine burned a lot of oil although I never let it run low as I well knew about that
