While I’ve ridden many “gravel” bikes over the years (they will always be cyclocross bikes in my mind…), I can’t recall ever having raced a proper gravel event. The Cascadia Super Gravel (www.downeastracingnw.com/) is well known as perhaps the most “mountain bike” of gravel events in our region. I had promised a friend that I would do this event with her last fall, and while she had to rescind her entry, I decided to go ahead and race it solo. And I’m glad I did!
For a bike, I used the best bike I’ve ever ridden- the Stooge Dirt Bomb, AKA the “Stupidest Enduro Bike:” • Is this the stupidest ...

So salty it broke your visor!
@@LaurentiusTriarius Ah that was a tumble on the Pivot Shuttle SL!
"keep single track single" - lmao, gravel riders.
yeah never heard of one of those "in-line-races" ?
Coincidentally, I tried to ride this course last week on my SS Surly. The course signs are still up! LIke you said, "I'm not saying I understand it...."LOL. Big props to FOCF. Great group of people.
Gravel might not be everyone's favorite cycling genre, but it was fun to watch this one and cool to see new challenges. I've done almost every form of cycling from mtbing to fast road riding, and this type of event seems like something anyone could try and have fun also.
hey Jeff, ran into you a few weeks ago and we had a quick trial side chat so seeing as we are bro's now you should take my advice and try another gravel event in good weather! all of a sudden those big decents are super fun!
I did the 50 mile as well, was certainly a suffer fest at times lol. But I enjoyed it!
Also that was me in the red longsleeve and blue bibs at 6:34!
Awesome!!!! Did you have fun? Thanks for the comment! Cool you made it into the vid! I wish I could have shown more people, but tried to design the video to appeal to folks who follow my channel (instead of being a bit more of a documentary). Shit, I have no idea who won!
@@JeffKendallWeed For the most part yeah! I had a weird setup (surly disc trucker with a deore MTB groupset and flat bars lol), but it handled everything surprisingly well.
Also, your videos got me into mountain biking! Picked up a Ripmo AF on sale this christmas and have been having so much fun.
I love your very mountain-biker take on the gravel scene. I’m primarily a mountain biker who does a few gravel events a year mostly to push my endurance and switch things up a bit. It’s always type 2, and always rewarding. (I ride a hardtail with gravel tires and alt bars and just laugh as I pass everyone on the downhills with my fancy dropper post)
It is always weird to me to see "my trails" on youtube. I grew up in Capitol Forest and have lived here for all my life (46). I started mountain biking in the 80s on those motorcycles trails and as tastes have changed have ridden drop-bar "gravel" bikes on the same trails in the last few years. Good video as always!
You made that look way more fun than it was, I'm sure 😂
LOL I did plenty of wheelies while I still had energy!!!
I just moved to Iowa from Phoenix, AZ a few years ago. I got into gravel when I found out how many gravel races there are here. As a mountain biker, I agreed with literally everything you said! Haha it’s so true. Type 2 mutually shared misery and energy! It’s so hard to describe but so so felt. Well done!
8:26 that was me 🤣 great video man! That course was insane
Not super local to you, but in Oregon there is the High Cascades 100 and the Alpine Epic. Great XC races and some fun downhills. Thanks for the great content!
I can get tired just by watching this, I don't even need to ride it! Good job!
great video!...fun to ride along, enjoyed the comments and wheelies, hope you do more gravel/mtn style events!
Great video Jeff! Fun to follow along when you do these kind of organized adventures 😊
Bear springs trap xc on mt hood this weekend. 20 and 30 mile options and a fun non competitive ride as well. True classic Oregon xc.
You could always do some of the gravel races in Northern California and Oregon that were like 00s XC trails, like Grinduro.
True! What I wanna do is Lemurian, but I don't think they have it anymore...
Lemirian here in Redding was a few weeks ago. Super fun! Lemurian Shasta Classic. Redding represents strong. Would love to see you here.
Cool and different video! And great job finishing!
I would recommend checking out the Ring of Fire XC race happening in Bend, OR - 50mi ~5k ft of elevation & a lot of singletrack!
Please come back to Oly and check out North Slope at Capitol forest!
My first mtb race was at capital forest in 1994. Barracuda dos equis hardtail, Panracer smoke and dart tires, red anodized cantilever brakes, rock shock mag21 fork with 2 inches of travel!!!!
FOCF does a good job!
Wow, the 100 mile course must have been gnarly in those conditions. Good job.
This looked like a lot of fun! Also damn challenging
10 minutes into this video and I've seen more mountain bike trails than gravel lol. Crazy event
Look into BC Bike Race. Seven days of epic British Columbia singletracks - the best week on a bike!
You should also check out the gravity trails at North Slope! They're great!
Great video! I am the other rider in the thumbnail image (pink vest lady with accent). It was nice to be able to show the kids what I am doing when I come home dirty & tired. I got off course at the flipped 50/100mi signs so ended up riding back to car a different way and DNFing.
You’re super strong! Was great pedaling with ya for a moment! Sorry to hear about the DNF, if it weren’t for a bunch of other people being there too, I would’ve made the same mistake.
@@JeffKendallWeed You doing wheelies definitely made me suck it up and try harder!
Hahaha as they say- if you have only one trick, be sure you can do it anywhere!
Great vid, as always. Fun to see you do something different. Just not too often. 😅
What a great video. Thanks. 😄
Nice job on the finish Jeff! I can’t believe you did that being jet lagged. Also loved the rowdy drop bar clips from before. -Tyler/Jess
Awesome meeting you guys! Glad you had a great race!!!
that race was tough 50 miles ...great job
That was a real degenerate move starting from the back 😂
It does seem like a bit of a suffer fest on the rain, but at the same time very appealing to try! I have a gravel bike but never did a gravel race. This video made me think of looking for one in my area 😊
Try it! I admit I don't love the genre, but it was great doing something different! And a goal is nice.
Midwest gravel is quite a bit different than Cascadia gravel. I quite enjoy our race events, more drafting and group tactics with shorter sections of harder 2 track thrown in to break up big groups. I'd probably quite enjoy the routes out there, but not at race pace, in the wet, with poor signage 😬
I did a gravel race a couple days ago, so fun!!
Glad to hear that!!!
I love gravel racing but that was not like any gravel race I’ve done. Nice job!
Check out Cascade Bike Club’s Winthrop gravel tour in june. three days of epic gravel riding
check out Bell Lap XC Series. I believe they’re already partway through the season though. 24 hours of Riverside in Spokane and 12/24 in Bend could be up your alley as well.
You should try the Whiskey Off-road in Prescott AZ next year! Best race anywhere.
Ah I am familiar with the Whiskey! From what I recall, it's not technical enough... but maybe that was the Whiskey 50?
Well, hopefully there is enough spice on your rigid klunker! There is alot of gravel road in it, but the singletrack segments have some chunky sections for sure. Also, some flow too. It's not Sedona....just adjacent.
That aint gravel riding here in europe😝 but that is how i see my gravel riding as an enduro rider😝 Those rigid drop bar bikes are so much fun on singletrack, you got to love that underbiked feeling when bombing down a “less then green descent”🎉
I use the exact same diesel analogy, takes me about an hour to get the engine running sweet. I've been wondering if adding some sprint training would help, I do barely any currently.
Sweet video!
Thanks! After 500+ youtube videos, I've only done a few race reports- and all moto races. This was a first! Hope the format was OK!
Thanks for the content. One of my favorite local events with sightings of team mates. Pleasure to have your manuals on our trails.
Need to get onto the BC Bike Race
Rad video!
Well done. Here in Germany the Mountainbike races are less technical than this gravel race. Doubting myself for lifing here :/
Cold 🥶
Gran Fondo Leavenworth is on 5/19 Grande: 80 miles (34 gravel), 7300′ climbing, Medio: 40 miles (14 gravel) 3400′ climbing
Hi90 Grindy on 6/8 Grande: 90 miles (60(!) gravel) 7800′ climbing, Medio: 53 miles (40 gravel) 6300′ climbing(!!!),
Mellow Velo: 26 miles (8 gravel) 1000' climbing
there are a few others around the Olympic Peninsula and around Oregon
I'll be participating in Unbound Gravel on 6/1
Check out the Galbraith Supreme. It's 33 miles and 5200 feet. Might be what you're looking for
Gravel race or moto enduro lol. Awesome video!
We made a fair trade! I had more fun at the moto race (and spent more $$$), but both were wonderful experiences!
nice you indulging yourself to old school XC racing
How many wheelies in those 50 miles? Pssst! We did this riding on cyclocross bikes (same thing as a gravel bike) back in the 90’s…..never skip the whiskey
Ordered me up some LMNT. Hopefully I will ride like you 😳
Thank you Shayne!!
the part of the gravel culture I most respect is people who refuse to become mountain bikers. They pick their way down black diamonds on no suspension and practically bald, skinny tires, a gravel biker completely in tune with their inner mountain biker. They will never buy a mountain bike, not even a hard tail.
respect
That seems more like a mtb race with some gravel road on course.
The manual on the curly bar bike just inspired me wtf
Hahaha thanks! 2014 was a fun year! Crazy that was a decade ago!
"Make the singletracks single again"
“Keep single track single” what a tool…
Did you end up going to sea otter?
NOPE! Big video coming out Thurs AM as to why...
imo gravel riding is for people who want to road bike and not die... also it's quieter
Nice, but what happened to the burrito? 🌯
All old guys do gravel 😂
I would say that this course is more of a XC MTB trail than gravel. Would not ride that on my gravel bike with no suspension and 40mm tires.
technically I am always gravel biking.. since there are no real trails around here..
Plenty of “Gravel” labeled events that are more old school XC events, but the “Gravel” term gets the participants so blame the game not the player😉
Hahaha fair call, Rook!
@@JeffKendallWeed I always say "Gravel" is the "safe word" that lures people in to situations where they accidentally develop mountain biking skills:)
I was there. This race was kinda fukt.
LOL! Seemed manageable for the 50, but 100 miles?! The top guys only needed 2 more hours!!! HOLY MOLY!
@@JeffKendallWeed I was happy for the first 40 miles. The mud and rain put a damper on my good vibes after a few hours. And yes I got passed by three of the 100 milers.
Them 100 folk are GNARLY! Awesome work getting to that second aid station!!!
So its a cross country race done with road bikes? Well that sounds umm not fun.
if you wanna keep single track single then move over and let him pass
