Saw him play a set with The Cure who were supporting the Banshees on tour. Then come out again and play with the Banshees.Thought it was strange at the time not knowing the circumstances.
Date of transmission of this episode: 3rd November, 1979, a few weeks after the release of Join Hands. McKay and Morris quit on 7th September 1979, immediately before the tour. Robert Smith of The Cure subbed on guitar, and Budgie filled in for Morris on drums. This is the band you see here.
Late 79-81 was an interesting period of time for them. They had a new line up after the Aberdeen incident, but were also still playing a lot of their post-punk material from The Scream and Join Hands because Kaleidoscope was so different from their previous worth with the exception of Skin. Israel was probably the closest song to what we would get on Juju until it came out, and it's crazy to me that it wasn't put on Juju.
This song and album saved me from my queer, high school trauma/angst. I saw Siouxie in San Francisco in 1982. Both nights they performed. It was a religious experience.
@@antipatsy nah, McKay and Morris had walked out by then. Robert had the sole distinction of being guitarist with The Cure AND The Banshees at this point. Amazing.
This performance is incredible... It´s a hell of a song to play live, so fast it´s even difficult to breath in between verses for Siouxsie, and even for the rest of the band... and yet they get to the climax of it! Aw!
I don't know, it could have been a gag that was set up, you don't see the crowd in that shot... But then again that might've been real and flew towards some peoples faces lmao!
This is awesome. One of the best pure punk performances ever. Siouxsie is like a manic Lady Macbeth ! Love the totally wired-up drummer - and the juxtaposition of Siouxsie's picture next to Mary Whitehouse ! Deliberately anarchic !
I was 14 at the time.... some nights I dreamed about Siouxsie being my girlfriend.... then the awakening was so hard. Pure class, pure talent, pure charisma..... what a commanding stage frontwoman❤❤❤❤❤
That's me these days, haha, though sadly I've never dreamed about it. I just sleep on the thought. Maybe I'll get lucky one of these days. Discovered them a year ago now already, amazing band.
Surprised Sl0uxsle did not hit the presenter over the head with the microphone after that snydey cheeky comment before the banshees start playing.... I would have 😡😡

I'm sure he observed how red lipstick, black eyeshadow and teased hair makes for a bold statement on a person with pale skin and dark features. However, I am not seeing where she taught him anything. He's a guitarist so that dancing while singing and playing would have been quite a feat and amusing to watch. He's more relaxed onstage but I think that becomes natural given time. Perhaps occasional playfulness and the freedom to be a little bit strange? As for the slight gender bending that was the influence of 70s glam rock (David Bowie, The Sweet etc..)scene right after the long hair rebellion of the 60s that encouraged men especially to push against societies norms.
Raw and powerful...this is the Sioux i prefer! She has such a fantastic stage presence and that voice Damn!
I love to see Robert playing with the banshees. This video is punk history

This is still one of the best punk performances captured on film.
Simply beautiful!👍
It's still an all time fave for me, still so *alive* sounding, urgent, visceral...
Are you serious???
Just because you liked this performance doesn't mean it the best "ever"
Post punk, no punk...

The energy in this song is just amazing, where have these days gone of originality in songs
Everything is autotuned and corporate now.
This sounds so hard. Listen to that Bass and Drums! Roberts Guitar full of distortion. Punk as hell.
No doubt right. It is hard. Right on.
Fabulous
Is that Robert? Timeline says it should be John McKay.
I love it!

it's Ian Curtis
LOL. He said "chap" 😂😂😂😂
this version is far better than the official
Hell ya --- just replayed it.
Robert Smith...
The talent, the charisma and the Cool just spills out of her.
The intro....OMG. This without doubt the Banshees best song.
that one guy was touched by the spirit
Any time you're pissing off the middle class, you know you're doing something right.
JoeStunner trouble is m8 they’ve turned into middle class
Gosh , you absolute rebel .
They said the bands were from Manchester & Birmingham but didn't mention which bands.
Wouldn't be The Banshees. I think they were from London.
Unfortunately the middle class consists of like 2 people and a dog at this point lol
Don’t you mean pissing off the upper class? The vast majority of Americans are middle class.

Nothing gets better than this!!!!
Budgie is a real powerhouse here.
Late seventies never to be repeated, pure energy class.
I just love how she throws the mic stand into the crowd.. has me in stiches every time!
Probably a couple of the crowd needed stitches too.

Iconic performance
❤ Yep...and real Punk (that song alone) still stands Today.
This is my favourite Siouxsie & the Banshees song, followed by Hong Kong Garden
Nice! I like The Staircase Mystery too!

This one and _Mirage_ were the only two punk songs she did. That crap she did in the 80s sucked.
