I’m European. I went to seoul in 2019 and ended up in a nightclub with some other girls. I can’t even put into words how I felt. I couldn’t take a step without some random man trying to grab me, I had men put hands all over my body (obviously without my permission). Me and a friend hid in the bathroom but when we tried to leave again it turned out 5 different men had been waiting for us?? at one point someone even grabbed my arm and tried to pull me out of the club and into a taxi without even talking to me. I understand that there are stereotypes about foreign women but honestly it seems that’s more like an excuse for men to treat us with a complete lack of respect. Korea is a beautiful country and I enjoyed everything else about it, but if you’re a woman going there just be careful.

  • @Raphanne

I live in Seoul and it's true that quite a few young guys, grown adults and elderly men have asked me if I was Russian. Before coming to Korea, I didn't mind that question because even in my homecountry of France, people always told me that I looked Polish, Russian or eastern European in general. Even Russian people ask me if I'm Russian sometimes. ^^
I'm blonde with blue eyes, and I have high cheek bones, so I get it. It's not so much the question that bothers me, it is their behavior when asking that question with heavy undertone in Korea that creeps me out. Even when I was visiting the Blue House in broad daylight with a Korean female friend, an ahjeossi came up to me, abruptly interrupted our conversation and blurted out: "Are you Russian?" with an avid look. His wife didn't look pleased at all.
And before getting married, I tried meeting people while doing language exchange. I met great people there that actually wanted to learn a foreign language, but there were also foreign hunters who got handsy quickly and would try to initiate some kind of "skinship" right away, by putting their arms around me. I told them to not touch me as I know they wouldn't behave this way with Korean women. And no, I don't go to clubs and I've never used Tinder in my entire life. Those were in cafés. It was a good way to recognize the creeps. There are exceptions but, for me, what worked well was having this rule: if a guy born and raised in Korea puts a single finger on me before being in a committed relationship, he was out.

I lived there as a student and met a lot of foreign women- students, professionals, some with kids etc. Almost everyone had an experience with some random guy on the street/subway asking if they were "Russian". I myself was groped just minding my own business on public transportation. Other times, I just felt patronized or dismissed by Korean men in professional settings or treated like a child. Couldn't shake off that uncomfortable feeling that we are being viewed as exotic pieces of meat basically. Granted, it was a few years back so hoping things have changed. I am a Korean man. This is just my point of view as a Korean man, if you have a different thought, you are probably right. First, I feel a bit uncomfortable with "The Fetishization Of Foreign Women By Korean Men" since it sounds like Generalizing many Korean men have the fetishization of foreign women, but It's still a good thing to discuss this kinda topic.
However, It is also true that there are Korean men who try to hook up foreign girls in some night clubs or dating apps for sure, and they think of foreign women as if it's an achievement in the game like a trophy. But What I want to point out is that Ordinary Korean never go to nightclubs or use Dating apps to find their potential partner for the future. So, frankly speaking, the bunch of men in the nightclub (not all of them tho) are there to look for one-night stands for sure, and the likelihood to meet those kinda ppl(having the fetishization of foreign women) is supposed to be high in that case. So if you are a foreign woman, and you would like to meet Korean guys. It is a better idea that you join some kinda clubs where you can share a hobby or other places like school, church or use blind dates. Plus, I see the thing also works the same in other countries since I currently live in Canada.
Apart from what I said, I feel sorry for the women who had a bad experience in S.Korea. I would like to say to foreign women having a fantasy about Korean guys from K-drama that it would be better to leave the fantasy just at the drama. Korean men are not as perfect as you watched in the dramas, they are just typical average men. There's probably a very small number of exceptions though.

100% agree with the OP. I live in Canada and was never in to the club scene here (much prefered going to see artists in concert) because clubs here are full of creeps too. I think this comes with the territory. I had a friend of a good friend who was a barmaid downtown, she looked like human Barbie, and we always went to her work before she finished because she had creeps who would stay until closing to harrass her. She became so paranoid, she wouldnt even answer her door when ordering takeout and would make her boyfriend go to the door because she never wanted strangers to know where she lives. There are weirdos everywhere. The number of Korean men who fethishize foreign women is probably the same amount as foreign women who go to Korea because they fetishize Korean men. The two groups should hook up and leave everyone else alone.

Western men don't see Asian women as "easy" or as candidates for one night stands. They see Asian women as the types to be quiet, obedient, and submissive. Most western guys want to have serious relationships and marry an Asian woman because they want a subservient wife. Korean men might as well just order a blonde haired, blue eyed sex robot, cause that's all they're really after. Neither stereotype is entirely true, and both have their downsides, but I'd rather be viewed the way western men view Asian women than vice versa.

After 7 years I am tired and hate being asked if I am Russian and people always ask me why I hate Russian girls. I don’t hate Russian girls. I have amazing friends from Russia here. I hate being called Russian by men because they associate it with something negative and think Russians are easy to get and have no standard. Which is bs. But they have let media and past affect their opinions so it will be very hard to change. Same goes when they find out I’m American and they think oh so can we kiss now? After 5 min of talking. Because they don’t care about being fetishized themselves when I brought this subject up to my Korean friends I said is it not weird for you that someone might just want to have sex with you because you’re Korean? And not for who you are as a person? And they said it wasn’t weird at all, why would it be weird. They see it as a compliment. And they think it’s a compliment when they feel this way about foreigners and they think it’s like just wanting to experience love from another culture. It’s very interesting compared to the west where it’s to the other extreme where appropriation is thrown out for so many things. I am indifferent to the subject because I feel it would be wrong for me to judge their way of living as it isn’t done with malicious intent but wanted to share my experience on this subject as someone who lived there and talked to Korean men and women about this.

I have quite a few foreign friends in Korea, and the commonality of the stories of friends who cried and asked me for counseling after meeting a bad man in Korea was that they met a man at a club or on Tinder. In fact, I understand that there are few places for them to meet men naturally in Korea as foreigners. But if you meet idiots just because you're lonely, it will only waste your time and emotions.

@@franciscovilcheavila960 If a Korean or a foreigner is sexually harassed, they can report it to the police and the perpetrator will be punished. Korea is a country ruled by law.
There are many cctvs in Korea, and the population density is high, so it is easy to obtain evidence and witnesses.
But since the cops don't speak English, you'll need a Korean friend.
To say that Koreans are more dangerous than people from other countries is, of course, absurd.
Foreign women who go to any country need to be more careful.
There are cases in which some foreigners do not pay attention at all in Korea because they think that 'Korea is safe'.
The problem is that many of my foreign friends repeat the same behavior when they become lonely even after such a bad experience.
They must learn to control their loneliness.

This serves as a wake-up call for Western women to understand how they are portrayed by international media. Platforms like Only Fans and Twitch streamers inadvertently reinforce these stereotypes. It wasn’t long ago that Asian women faced similar challenges. The infamous scene in "Full Metal Jacket" with the line, "Love you long time," from a Vietnamese character, unfortunately, tainted the image of Asian women, particularly for those residing in Western countries.
In the past, Western men were highly sought after by Asian women, largely due to war and media influence. Now, the tables have turned, with Western women showing a preference for Korean men, largely driven by media portrayals. The world is indeed a carousel, with everyone getting their turn. The media wields significant power in shaping public perception.

One of the things that annoy me the most and that's not something solely happening in korean minds, is the idea that someone who has many different sexual partners, automatically doesn't care who that partner is/would sleep with anyone. I can't speak from my own experience because while I don't think there is anything wrong with it, skinship with someone I don't have basic trust in is way beyond my comfort zone/stressfull to me, but most of my friends had various one night stand, but just because of that no one else is entitled to "their time".
And yeah, in general it would be great if we could just stop generalizing. People will have different opinions not matter the continent/the country they're from. Weither it's for religious reasons, general upbringing, based on experiences or like me simply because of their own comfort zone.

Всё. im east european girl living in korea and speaking korean for more than 10 years, currently living here for 3 years and half and i can't really explain how many times i was traumatized by k men not only by close contact, but also just because i hear and understand everything what they say when see european face
the freshest example is this year in early July i went with my k friend to have dinner (i mean real dinner, it was day time), two ajossies sat down behind us and i swear i heard like one of that old assholes asked to the opponent how much it costs to sleep with foreign women now
i turned in tears immediately, my bad
i wish i be stronger than now next time
    and
    i wish i couldn’t speak korean sometimes

Same in America, I don’t think it’s wrong people find certain ethnicities besides themselves attractive but I can totally see why it can be taken too far. You also shouldn’t date someone completely because you find them physically appealing. Personality and demeanor matters just as much.
