  • This is the Ferris Wheel Press "The Brush" fountain pen. I unbox it, talk about the parts and features of the pen, provide some size comparisons and measurements, and then do a writing sample. After the writing sample, I talk about what I like and what I don't like about the pen. Please feel free to use the chapters provided below to skip to various parts of the review.

Appreciate your honest assessment. I really want to like Ferris Wheel Press, but they just strike me as being “too hip for school”. They seem to understand that a large part of the fountain pen/ stationery community is about “I’d rather look good than feel good”. The ink seems pretty good, but with about 250 million inks out there to choose from, I see that they’ve kicked up the aesthetics and more than compensate the design by an equally kicked up pricing structure. When I first looked at this Brush pen, I thought that it looked like a prototype with a simple nut around the middle as a place holder. To me it looks more like a pen I would find at a craft fair being sold for $30-40 US. Not a pen from a company lauded for their design choices. A few more iterations and a bit more thought into this nut might have it fall in line with the sleekness and beauty of the rest of this pen. But even with a “nut” more to my liking, I find it impossible to justify $150 US for this pen. Of course, the kicker is it’s poor performance as a writer. Sending a new pen to a nibmeister to get it to simply write doesn’t work for me. Quite frankly, I’d rather stick with my Muji.

  • @obituariopuertorriqueno4283

This is a minimalistic design with almost no appeal to me, but I must admit its engraved section is simply gorgeous. All things considered, I wouldn't spend that much money for such a pen --particularly after learning about your experience with it. Ferris Wheel Press inks are another story. ✒️

Just received a Brush (not the gold nib) and a Carousel, both in medium, and loaded them with Stroke of Midnight (sparkling ink). The Brush is definitively a drier pen than the Carousel, but the nib is sooo smooth! Can't wait to try it with a wetter ink and no glitter.

  • @TheNightowl001
    @TheNightowl001 Před 2 lety +7

Curiously, for me, the most attractive thing about this pen would be that extra-extra-fine nib. But for the +/- $150 price tag and the fact that I can appreciate the aesthetics for the artistry they are, it really just doesn't flip my switch. I'm okay with admiring others' Ferris Wheel Press pens from afar.

Unique design has its aesthetic value to be sure, but I don't see myself spending my money on their pens. Where I live I could buy a Platinum 3776 with a UEF nib for that if I wanted/needed a UEF needle to write with.

I love the artistry and presentation of Ferris Wheel Press. Unfortunately, many of their inks are too pale to write with but also unfortunately it’s hard to tell which ones until you buy a bottle. I already had doubts about the pen because I think the section too narrow (albeit beautiful) and the price too high. Thank you for the review-you confirmed my suspicions. My Roaring Patina Black arrived yesterday though and I’m happy to say it’s a winner.

Oh I have been eyeing this thing... the dark green they call Lord Evergreen is so to my taste. I hold pens by the barrel, anyway; I was taught back in the day to write with my whole arm and being a painter as well, it just comes naturally at this point. So if this pen is for anyone, you'd think it would be for me but it managed to hit my two biggest pet peeves! I like a nice, wet, springy, true medium; and I can't stand not to post. Alas. I'll be keeping an eye on what else they come up with, though. Thanks for the review! It was well timed.

The price is, in my estimation not rational! I'm also not a fan of the ink, although at least that black is moderately interesting and legible!
I find the whole FWP line somewhat twee. The packaging is interesting, but it adds cost to a product that is at best meh. Unusable bottles--both the chargers and the 38ml--and ink colors that mostly are weak and boring
The team needs to shift back to design and leave ink and pens to companies that focus on the user.
Again, thank you for an honest review!

I'd say that you and Doug have nailed it.
I was seduced by the forest green colour and still like it as an aesthetic art object but the nib (M) and section are far too narrow for my medium adult male hand.
It's an overpriced marketing scam, designed to impress teenage girls (who have indulgent parents with deep pockets) or petite, twenty something, fashion victim 'professionals' with a large disposable income.
The self-congratulatory, complacent 'designers' were in love with aesthetics and form and forgot function. Flashy design is, usually, bad design.
As Doug recognises, there's nothing brush-like about it and, to me, it resembles the dip pens of old, before the modern obsession with oversize.
I expect they'll release an XL edition - at double the price - but I've already been mugged, in a moment of weakness, and I've hopefully learned my lesson, I certainly paid top dollar for the tuition.
The ink bottles are a perfume bottle joke, at nearly Chanel No. 5 prices!
      Caveat - blinkin' - emptor!

I like my Brush pen a lot and I like the narrow section because it suits my small hands better. I agree the price is a bit much but I don't regret buying it and find it beautiful and comfy to write with. I have an ancient Papermate fountain pen. After lusting for the FWP/Esterbrook collaboration, I bought the limited edition Nebulous Plume and the FWP Carousel, only to discover that in my ancient Papermate, I had the best pen all along. So far none of the newer pens I've bought comes close to the experience of writing with the Papermate on Clairefontaine. (Now I'm buying up vintage Papermates so I can have several inks on the go.) I think I'll try a Pelikan M400 next, and then try to call it quits....

They made a pen called the Carousel that was very similar to the Kaweco Perkeo , but I'd have to say that FWP beat Kaweco in this case. My Perkeo nib is very scratchy , and my Carousel nib is buttery smooth. Their inks are hit or miss with me and I wish they specified when an ink is very light. But I love jelly bean blue, Peppermint drop, Candy marasala and few others. I would get the Brush, but it seems a bit pricey and its not in a color that I've liked yet ( I like darker greens/olive).

Doug, have you happened to test the Roaring Patina Black for water resistance? I’ve watched your comparison a couple of times and this little voice in my head makes me want to order a bottle for a daily use black; it would be kinda fun signing things in a black ink that shimmers just to see who notices 😆 just don’t want it to get all runny if…uhm…when… I inevitably spill something on my desk.

Thanks again for the reviews. That tip about the nibs hits home hard. I ordered some jinhao 992s, instead of the 517s fude I was going to(I hoped to get the wife into the hobby) and all the nibs are bad, Sratchy, hard starts, dry feeds... Lesson learned. I wanted to use one as a highlighter and have some to spare: for fun and for the wife to use. No such luck.
I was wondering your opinions(any who know) about the Hong Dian 517s. I am considering buying the pen in the fude and ordering the three set of spare nibs(ef, f, fude) since I want a good fude for my I Ching drawing and highlighting for my research. The spare fude should give me at least one good nib out of two? Maybe a fine nib that I might be able to use? If I get some good nibs and the pen is good I could get a second pen(517d?) to use with the fine. Thoughts?

I have to say, the packaging and engraving are impressive. But if you’re going to release a fountain pen these days and name it anything that has to do with common words or phrases tangential to flexible nibs (i.e., “Wow, that nib is so flexible and writes so wet it’s almost like a brush!”), they should at least give it an interesting nib. Not even flexible. It could be an architect or zoom nib. Perhaps I am nitpicking. It’s not like they named it the Wet Noodle.
I don’t know, it just bugs me.
