I admit i have never heard of Linda Martell but i have now and all i gotta say is.....WOW!! I feel like the country music world missed out on some great music with a voice like hers.
Same
Can't believe I've never heard of her
Linda Martells brings that country swagger too! Really cool to see her sing.
Wow never heard of her . beautiful voice.
She has the voice that should've propell her to great stardom
Who the heck is Linda Martell??? She’s absolutely fabulous!!
Linda Martel could sure sing. I never heard of her before. She is as good as Charlie Pride whom I loved so much. He had such a wonderful voice and so does this lady.
Linda's 1970 lp, Color me Country was reissued this year, 2022 on orange vinyl. It's great, available from ebay.
Martell, here singing with the Buckaroo's, has been singing all her life. R&B and Country, was on the Grand Old Opry.
D dry+e++
1ohm tum,
She's the best one on there.
@@carmenhardy2629 Are these 10 almost forgotten women still singing (recording doing Concerts) all 10 are in the winners circle how can we find their music today.
Linda Martell I'm so proud of you hope you do well in Country Music you're off to a Great start loved your song
@@shirleyburks1998 I don't know. The second one was pretty good but the rest, meh. They ain't no Emmylou!
Fabulous talented ladies fantastic voices
Each and everyone of them should have had more success
If that black lady was given a real prime chance, and a spotlight, she could've been the first, or only black girl country singer to make a splash.
True that!
Her name is Linda Martell,And has a Beautiful Voice! Only heard this song as a Kid. Charlie Pride was a Favorite along with Glen Campbell,Tanya Tucker in the 70's.
@cameron ashton- If the guy playing fiddle behind Linda Martel looks familiar it is Don Rich of Buck Owen's Buckaroos.
@@jerrybrownell3633 I thought that too.
@@Jamesdylandean - When Don Rich first joined The Buckaroo's in 1960 he played fiddle and part time rhythm guitar. Buck taught him how to play lead guitar. Act Naturally (1963) was the first song Don played lead on. This clip is around late 60's or early 70's.
Linda M artel.
I love Her. Music..
Did you know Linda Martell's 1970 lp, Color Me Country was rereleased this summer,2022 on orange vinyl. On ebay.
I had totally forgot these songs and they should be played more on the country stations, I suppose the DJ's are just too young to remember them!!😘😉😁
We don't have DJs its all prerecorded
Ah yes, that good ole sound, fiddle, steel guitar.
Nothin' better
Linda Martell's 1970 lp. Color me Country was reissued in July, 2022 on orange vinyl, available on ebay.
Wow. I only knew Kay Adams & Ruby Wright. And i consider myself a hillbilly music "perfesser." I especially enjoyed Ms Martell, the first singer in the vid. Thanks!
LOVELY I REMEMBER THEM LOVELY GIRLS GREAT SINGERS
Never heard of any of them or their songs, but really enjoyed this.
I grew up on country music, and it's sad to say that I've never heard of these women...
I never knew them , so they a are not forgotten , but if I did know them I would not have forgotten them.....
Me and you both, brother. Although I did hear that Little Pink Mack song the other day for the first time. I presume it was her singing it. So I guess that countrs.
Never heard of Linda Martell, she has more of a jazz voice.
Her 1970 lp, Color Me Country has been reissued on orange vinyl available on ebay
She was R&B and made a country album.
I've always said early R&B was country with a different beat, and vice versa
Love this music why these singers are put under the table sad. Nothing like the Hillbilly music . Play more of it.
I'm 64 heard of these ladies in my younger years some songs were really great but DJ picks songs for there radio time slot if they didn't lie the sound no air play
Back when screamin Detroits, hummin Cummins, and chatterin Catapillers use to roll up and down the black top. The girl in the pink Mack was just as popular as the girl on the billboard wearing nothing but a smile. Bless them all for their talent during the growing pains of country music ♥️
The first lady was the best!
I like Linda Cool country song sounds like ol time song
Linda Martell, Wilma Burgess, Kay Adams. They were great. Played all of them during my DJ career.
Fantastic compilation.More please.
I think these ladies were great. I have several of Lawanda Lindsay’s albums downloaded to my iPod. She’s fantastic. I remember her well...Buck Owens recorded her! And she was on Chart records for a time. I have several of Wilma Burgess’ songs on my iPod too.
Amazing voice and persona! Thank u Sheri Shepard for shining the spotlight on her today!
Amazing talent in this especially Lawanda Lindsay and Kay Adams. Speaking of the underappreciated the late great Miss Connie Eaton recorded a single in 1971 on Chart Records. Goes from a modest 1960s West Coast Pop gallop to a haunting outro that predated Reba McEntire by at least a decade!🎤😔❤B.W.
Reba Macintire's music was ok but I did not care for many of her songs.
Nice to give credit to those lesser know but still full of talent.
Cool. The only one I'm familiar with is Wilma Burgess. I love it when I find music that I didn't know 🎶✌❤🎶
This is very lovely and very rare.... I'm sure some of these lovely women are either alive or have passed away..... I lost the country station here a few years ago and I haven't been able to find a station that plays country music...... I honestly listen to various kinds of music........ Country music is one from my list......... I thank you for posting this video............
I've never heard of most of these People ,but Most are very Good !
I think all of these ladies have great potential I hear the Amazing Patsy Kline in Linda Burgess, Loretta Lynn & Tanya Tucker in Judy Adams they are all very good I will trying to find there music wow!!
I’ve never heard of any of them until today. WOW 😯
Ruby Wright was Queen of Country Kitty Wells’ daughter. Kitty’s son Bobby also had some modest success as a performer during the 1960s and ‘70s.
Hello beautiful friend?
Molly Bee was very popular back in the day. I’ve never heard of the remainder of them.
You're right. Forgotten. I was born and raised on country and I never heard of them nor their song.
I remember Molly Bee from "The Pinky Lee Show" it was a kiddy show in the 1950's
@Richard Hackwith- Molly was also a regular on The Tennessee Ernie Ford Show.
@@jerrybrownell3633 You're right, but for some reason, I never got to see his show that often.
Thank you, thank you 🙏 this is AWESOME 👏🏻 thank you 🙏
Ruby Falls was a great one too.
I remember moly bee she was good a long time ago.
Some fab voices on these girls....brilliant stuff. Will look for more from Linda Martell,Marion Worth & Ruby Wright (daughter of Kitty Wells)
I found some of Martell and Molly Bee so far.
@@carmenhardy2629 ...yes they are fab Carmen
Linda Martell's lp, Color Me Country is available on ebay
I remember my grandma singing thr chorus of Molly's song to us as kids. Never knew iy wasn't just something she made up. Hearing thr real thing now, grandma did pretty decent
I remember Wilma Burgess well!
I saw Judy Lynn on the Jimmy Dean show in 1965. I bought her album and looked for her songs, but she just vanished. Shame too, because she was good.
Gorgeous and powerful voice ! We all hope Beyoncé mentions her in her shows ! from Southern Brasil, country must honor all the black singersvAmerica has forgotten , NOW !
Please don't stop you're beautiful voice
I know who 5 of them are. Marion Worth's wonderful! But that song doesn't really show how beautifully she sang. I wish you could've found a clip of Shake Me I Rattle (Squeeze Me I Cry) or the flip side, Tennessee Teardrops. Those are two of the best songs she ever recorded. She sounded a lot like Patti Page - but not on this clip here.
Hello beautiful friend?
Holy shit I remember Molly Bee. I must getting real old.
Yes, Great ladies
I have a few others to add to the list; Karen Wheeler, Peggy Little, Patsy Sledd & Sunday Sharpe.
so.... true!!!
I just finished reading the book Finding Her Voice: Women In Country Music and stumbled upon this video. Love being able to put a face and voice to some of the female artists I was unfamiliar with.
Send me the book please
Wow!
Thank you. That was easy listening.
love the songs
Molly Bee became a big crossover star back in that era even doing film roles. She was kind of a country Connie Stevens.I discovered Wilma Burgess from the camp cult film Las Vegas Hillbillys with Ferlin Husky,Jayne Mansfield, and Mamie Van Doren.I fell madly in love with her hit song Baby. Her amazing voice which was remeniscent of Patsy Kline. I have just discovered Linda Martell and fallen in love with Old Letter Song.Check that out to see and hear the purity, power and soul of her voice. A sweet uplifting song due to Linda's energy and talent.I enjoyed all of these performances from these talents who deserve to be remembered.
Maybe in the next batch you can have Skeeter Davis, Susan Raye, and Donna Fargo
Donna Fargo has long been one of my favorite singers.
@@jmoody166the former and latter of this trio both had super crossover hits. Ms. Raye’s best known song was LA International Airport. Though she might be the mom of Colin Rays but she wasn’t.
Things have certainly changes concerning the last song here. Today many women are perfectly happy living solo loves
@brianbeecher3084 Their sleeping with anything that has a pulse, expecting to 5rid of any resulting complications with a trip to quack doctor. Cause they didn't listen to grandparents, or old country music. Mom and dad remain an influence even if they stop being a positive. The last couple generations they've been less and less of an influence. I watched most of it happening 1st hand and saw it coming. Graduating from college now "woke" and calling it education and insisting they know more than the people that built THR WORLD from nothing. Most wouldn't last a day 30 years earlier. Let alone during the depression, WW2 or frontier era. Some are tragically finding out how poorly equipped they are to survive outside the 1st world countries they berate .
I remember wilma bugress her singing is great and I love the song
Worth has a lot of first time country events, Played Las Vegas, GOO, and Carringe Hall in NYC. Heard her on the radio but I did not know her name.
I've heard Marion Worth bring the house down at the Opry. But her top hit was Christmas song "Shake Me I Rattle"
June Webb is also extremely talented but little known. Thank's for sharing!
There will be more videos with new names like June Webb! Thank you!
@@CountryMusicOne thank you! I love this kind of music I wish we could bring it back
I noticed the only female black act that won any major awards that people did not realized today was The Pointer Sisters who won 2 Grammys for best country song and best country vocal duo or group for Fairytale back in 74 which was their top 40 crossover hit. Even their song sounds more country than today's acts.
Driving that point home even more not only did the now late great Earl Thomas Conley record "Too Many Times" with Anita Pointer they sang it together as a duet on "Soul Train."B.W.
@@madbrowniac7871 And Conway Twitty recorded the sister's hit Slow Hand.
Conway Twitty might be the only Artist ever to have cover versions (and Number One Billboard Country Hits) of songs by both Bette Midler and The Pointer Sisters! "Slow Hand" (Pointer Sisters) and "The Rose" (Bette Midler).🎤😔B.W.
And of course ETC wrote a classic for Conway Twitty himself in 1976!B.W.
I NEVER HEARD OF ANY OF THESE SINGERS
Lawanda Lindsey’s song sounds strangely familiar kinda like....The Battle of New Orleans.
And Margie Bowes first song sounds like Dylan’s Don’t think twice.
*Understand Your Girl* by Margie Bowes was a direct answer song to Dylan's *Don't Think Twice(It's Alright).*
She should have hooked up with Country Charlie Pride and would have had the only Black duet in country music history.
I believe Margie Bowes was Doyle Wilburn's(Wilburn Brothers)Ex Wife and Ruby Wright i believe was the Daughter of Kitty Wells and Johnny Wright
Yes! Thank you!
Nice !😘👏👏👏
Hello beautiful friend?
Other than Molly Bee (I saw mommy kissing Santa Claus) never heard of the rest.
By gosh she sure could yodel never heard of her but she is pretty good 👏
Her great 1979 lp, Color Me Country was reissued in July 2022 on orange vinyl. I got it from ebay. Oops, it was 1970.
Hmm? Am I the only one who is wondering how any one of them could be almost forgotten. They're all very good if not great! I had to chuckle at 8:53. I thought,"Gee,is Marlo Thomas of That Girl going to sing?"
Pop music is not the only music with one or two hit wonders. You hear these ladies and wonder why some of the so called big names made it and they didn't.
Bobbie Gentry-actually a two hit wonder.
I want to add another one of the forgotten ladies of country music.
Betty Lee..
How about the late Lois Johnson? Did a lot of duets with Hank Jr.
🏳️🌈💞2021-08-02 Wilma Burgess, the first openly lesbian country music's singer begin 1960. Also first lesbian bar was opened by her in Nashville named 'The Hitching Post'. I'm very proud on her👄
LaWanda Lindsey sounds a lot like Sweetheart's of the Rodeo.
"Understand your girl" sounds similar to Bob Dylan's "Don't think twice, it's all right"
Yeah, now I listen again, it's an answer version.
Actually it was an answer song to Johnny Cash's "Understand Your Man" who was spending time a lot of time with Bob Dylan at the time. I supposed Dylan could have sued Cash, but friends before money.
@@kennypughcountrymusic5767 yeah I'd completely forgotten that song.
Some really fine voices here. Too many of them sound very much like famous singers. Molly Bee was actually rather well known.
She was a part of the Tennessee Ernie Ford show. Anyone remember LuAnn Simms. She was an Arthur Godfrey protégée.
Never heard of any of these singers.
I have never heard any of these ladies!!
Lawanda Lindsey, Wilma Burgess, ruby Wright, and Marion Wirth, the rest I don't remember.
I grew up in Nashville, and today if a female wants to be known, she don't have to sing, she has to bare most of her breasts and most of her legs. These ladies sang when it was still country music.
Key Adams sang a lot like Loretta. but all of them were good
Thanks for this compilation. It makes me wonder after seeing the first three y they didn't make it big though I know Wilma Burgess was out in her private and public life so I can understand back in the day y they didn't push her but come to think of there aren't out country artists that are out now that have successful careers in the business.
Chely Wright
@@donaldewert2402 Um if u look at Chely's career she had only 1 number 1 hit and her career tanked once she came out.
If they are good I'll buy their music as I don't care who they bed. But homophobic country music gotta be in everyone's private life. What They do behind closed doors was and is nobody's business but their own.
James Sullivan, wow she was brave doing that back then. Nice, different version of that song, took a minute to recogniseit, I never heard anyone but Dorothy Moore sing it before.
And wasn’t Ms. Moore a one hit wonder also?
I have never heard of any of these ladies.
Ilovethissongyousingnice
Hello Barbara, how are you doing?
Linda Martel was ruined by a bad contract....what a shame!
I have a Judy Lynn album
She looks like a clone of Leslie Gore in country garb.
Favorites of mine were Penny DeHaven & Connie Cato.
Didn't see Connie Cato or Penny Dehaven in video. But I remember Connie Cato singing "Super Skirt" on the radio. Penny DeHaven I saw in concert, 1985 with(I think) Donna Fargo. This video was interesting & it looked like a few were from the Hee Haw show.
"4 on the Floor and a 5th Down Under the Seat". Cato classic!
The second girl sounds like Connie Smith.
I agree. She was part of Buck Owens' stable of singers. Look up her minor hit song, "Today Will Be the First Day of the Rest of My Life." You'll hear alot of Connie Smith in that one!
You're right. I just checked some of her videos out. Even that Mysterious song...the postcard song.
Is Ruby Wright the daughter of Kitty Wells? Anyone.
Yes! And Johhny Wright.
Kitty Wells was, according to Little Jimmy Dickens, "a place a cat knows to get water!"(cite: *"Country Music Lover"/"You Destroyed Me" CBS-Columbia 4-44025, 13th Feb, 1967). *cited track.
Linda Martell? Black female country singer? I didn't know there ever was one. I just learned something.
Why wasn't Lorene Mann included?
Yourverygoodto
I dont know who she is never seen or heard of this lady everv
Hello Wanda, how are you doing?
Wellyourverygoodsingernow
Never heard of any of them...
Give me Wilma Burgess I could love her
Guess they ran out of hairsoray
Not familiar with this 1st lady🤔
She was the only black African female country singer
Country music really is color blind, so many talented black country singers that tried to break into the business.
she only released one album in 1970 called Color Me Country
Actually there was at least one other Black female country singer - a lady known as Ruby Falls.
Lovely voice, good control and rather adorable too. Sad that she didn't go farther.
What happened all of them
you forgot dotty west and im sure theirs more
Hi Mark! I think that Dottie has had a broader projection in her career, a greater recognition and specifically in 2018 she was chosen for the Country Music Hall of Fame. Therefore, in my opinion, she should not be on a list of "almost forgotten" artists. But as you said there are more artists and we will come back to this subject.Thank you for your comment!
their is far to many women in country music that are unrecognized that didnt hit queen status or get movies maid about them even some of todays like Lee Ann rhymes have kind of droped away
Its very telling that the country pretender chose to highlight Martell and not Ruby Falls.
Martell was a very visual and promoted one hit wonder who was prominently featured but didn't last.
Ruby is dead and can't be used as a publicity stunt
Cookie-cutter singers, you need to be something different, or something really special, to stand out in any genre of music, and you can see why they didn't. That said, many wonderful female country singers were never played on radio, and so are still largely unknown.
Bobbie Cryner's "The girl of your dreams" is a fabulous song, and she has a fabulous voice, but she's virtually unknown.
Who's heard of Dale Anne Bradley?
The list goes on.....
