How to Replace Front struts Lexus GS IS LS

  • Here's how to replace the front struts on a Toyota or Lexus with double wishbone front suspension.
Struts or shock absorbers become worn over time, causing a ride that is bouncy, sloppy handling and tire wear. A shock absorber or strut is responsible for controlling the rebounding action of the spring after a vehicle's wheel has taken the impact of a road imperfection.
To learn more about what's inside a strut/shock absorber, check out this video:
    • How Shock Absorbers an...
In this video, front struts are replaced on a Lexus GS. The procedure should be the same for the Lexus IS, GS and LS series of sedans, and similar for many other vehicles with double wishbone front suspension. The vehicle in this video exhibited a lot of bounce on the highway, and after replacing the struts the car feels more taught.
The strut is the assembly of the spring and shock absorber, and must be removed from the vehicle before replacement. The strut is held in by three bolts under the hood, and one bolt at the lower control arm. However, the ABS sensor and upper control arm have to be unbolted in order to get enough room to get the strut out.
Once removed, the springs are compressed and the strut mount nut removed. This releases the preload on the strut, allowing you to change it. Take caution when using spring compressors since they are dangerous - it is highly recommended to use a vice and compressors that have a locking safety pin.
Replacement is the reverse of disassembly. Comparing the old strut vs new strut upon rebound reveals that the old strut was slightly worn (still rebounded, although slowly), though the improvement in ride quality increased significantly.

The only time I replaced a strut ,I compressed the spring while still mounted on the car. That gave me enough clearance to remove it without messing with other parts like the steering knuckle in your case. Great channel. Love the concise format and the sibling humor.

    Two tips:
1)Don't bend the ABS bracket, just un bolt it, you have to swap it anyway. You can tuck it just above the sway arm, safely out the way.
    2) When you do the upper ball join mount/nut (thin stamped bracket holds to the aluminium arm), DO NOT hit the aluminium arm as you said not to. You don't have to!
All you need to do is tap the bottom of the bolt, avoiding shattering/damaging aluminium (give it some lube/penetrating oil etc). You are steel on steel this way. Then it'll simply pop out as long as you have jacked up the LCA as you say to in the video :)
This way no bashing aluminium, no bending metal tabs AND you save time :)
P.s. 3rd tip, you don't need a strap, just re-bolt the top support arm :)
p.p.s you should list torque specs, i'll add them in a reply tomorrow.
Cheers and thanks for the great video.

Another great video (I enjoy them on Toyota Nation forum as well). I have found that you want to break that 17mm strut nut (center of the mount on top) before removing as it makes it easier to deal with. Trying to break it on the ground is awful - especially if you do not have an impact wrench. Been there, done that. Breaking that nut lose makes your life 137x (that is a calculated value BTW) easier.

  • @olegfom1
    @olegfom1 Před 3 lety +5

Just a word of caution, when removing/installing the OEM bolt and nut that attach the strut to the lower control arm, one should apply the torque to the head of the bolt, not to the nut. This is a special nut with ridges that is supposed to be stationary. Otherwise, you risk damaging the lower control arm as well flatten the ridges of the nut. In this video, aftermarket bolt and nut are being used, so it wouldn't make a difference in this case.

That boot looks torn af... the shaft has hydraulic fluid around it and when dirt gets inside it will prematurely go out. I see so many vids of ppl just reusing the old boot, don't do this! Replace the BOOT COVER!

Borrow your gf or wife's nail polish, and matchmark everything before taking it apart. Some are tricky to put back right.

@@speedkar99 Some struts have to be oriented and degreed correctly. Someone on the forum ran into that with the rears.
