    This movie came so close to the conversations I have in my own head too it’s actually kind of bewildering. The thing about the thoughts of the other characters around Jake still being audible and sometimes mixed up and confused makes sense since I often think about what others are thinking.
    Definitely got me crying and hoping that there is kindness in the world, or if not that it’s within us. Jake is a lovely person that I can relate to.
    The direction of this movie snd the acting was spot on. Portrayed depression so well for me. Definitely rewatching this again.

    I think psychological films like this can be "chilling" and "spine tingling" until you realise that all the film's devices are being used to convey deep psychological narratives, then it becomes a pure work of art, the chills and fear-factor just transform into the shear ecstasy of bearing witness to genius film-making. More of this please Netflix.

      Absolutely FACT. It took me to the second viewing to appreciate it in this way.
      Admittedly it took months for me to watch it a second time because the first time I felt so uncomfortable and unearthed by it, but now watching it again I was able to sit back and appreciate the cinematic devices used that made me feel so uncomfortable the first time. Truly one of the most introspective, even on a meta level, films I’ve ever seen

    there's something so disturbing about the sound editing in this trailer. the sound of the dog's collar shaking, the windshield wiper, the mother laughing, over and over again until it's replaced by an eerie reversed voice that sounds similar to the way wind sounds. if the movie is anything like this trailer i'm totally down!!
    edit: another totally off thing about this movie: they're getting ice cream in a snow storm?
    edit 2: the father's hair keeps changing.
    final edit: after watching the movie, i can conclude this is a fantastic film! hit home in many parts and was incredibly metaphorical... fingers crossed that they release the soundtrack because something about the music in that dancing scene had me some sort of way...

      I live in Canada and I always eat ice cream and drink cold drinks in the winter. I don't see anything wrong with that. People drink hot coffee in the summer, I don't understand that. I already hate the heat, so in the summer when the sun is beating down, the last thing I'd want is to be even hotter by drinking a hot drink. But I love the cold, so consuming cold food and beverages is something I just do all year round.

      Meeee toooo! It kind of reminds me of old memories when you were younger, during winter like those long car rides and everything kind of warm and soft and safe, like in its own little cocoon vortex of time, when the future and adulthood was so far away and you had all the time in the world for talking and talking. Now Time seems to have speeded up so profoundly and the years are flying by and life is just continual day after day trying to stay on top of the tasks and problems that keep flying in and you’re just getting more and more behind no matter how hard you try! So I just push it all to the side and go lie down and drift off dreaming of those soft warm cozy days I can’t pin down but sifting somewhere in my mind like flour..

      @@michelleallen3288 and “we always have the choice to end it whenever we want”, which is basically the gist of the book, has always been the one thing that’s kept me calm for most of my life hh, so I guess that’s another thing about it that makes the film so comforting for me. and for the most part it captured the vibe of the book exceptionally well too, and creatively so, since it’s basically just an old man’s flying/jumping thoughts before he decides to end it, which is hard to shoot, let alone making it interesting, so really don’t think kaufman deserved the hate for this one hh

    As far as pretentious arthouse films go, this one really captures the feel of isolation, depression, being very uncomfortable in a situation you don't wanna be in, and this feeling of dread like there is no escape. It really gets under your skin

    I watched the film so many times and I sometimes rewatch this trailer just because. Definitely my current favorite film in 2020. This is one of the rare instances where the film surpasses the book. Both are great in their own way, but Kaufman really managed to add his own flair.

    This book was incredible. It's a short read I finished it in a couple of days. I bought it because on the back it says you'll be afraid but you won't know why. The entire books crawls under your skin and makes you so uneasy and by the ending you realize your clenching your jaw; but still you don't know why. The phone ringing the lemonade the snow the school all of it makes you so overwhelmed and without answers. This movie if it's anything like the book is going to hurt a lot of feelings, I can't wait.

      @@mariavikey it was one of those books that took me awhile to comprehend. I suggest picking it back up and reading the strange italicized pages from back to front. And then from there, I examined the story in the same direction like the final line tells you to do. And then recommend it to everyone because talking about it with people is so much damn fun! Lol

      Jamie Dailey depending on age it just gets more somber and melancholic. For the ones in their 20-40s I can see it playing out as a horror movie for them especially. For the older ones, they start progressing towards senility and are prolly already done with pondering over the same questions repeatedly. They perhaps know everything’s a trap, there are no answers and one can live or survive anyhow. Ultimately nothing really matters.

    Jesse Plemmons scares me. In everything I've seen him in, he has this unique ability to make you feel uncomfortable. Even in perfectly normal situations and this makes watching him a delight. He seems really nice in person.

    Just finished watching. It's actually making me realize that I need to put my self out there more and try to make a connection with people. And also that I need stop dwelling/day dreaming about things that might have been. It made me realize that there is a difference between introversion and loneliness.     So unsettling but I was there for the whole ride. I find any commentary on the human condition beautiful anyways, no matter how dreary. Don't expect a thrill. It is a psychological struggle with no end in sight, and I'm sure that is the central theme.

    I read about how Charlie was so frustrated after the cool reception to Anomalisa he was thinking about never doing another film. And his own brutally honest introduction to the Being John Malkovich screenplay book revealed a writer who wrestled with crushing depression even back in the 90s. Even when he was writing some of the best films of all time. As someone who knows depression myself, I can imagine that the idea of "ending things" might be something he's contemplated more than once.
    I'm glad you keep going, Charlie. You're brilliant and we love you.

      @@thumpdragfilms Anomalisa bombed at the box office. Being John Malkovich, Adaptation, and Eternal Sunshine were all hits. Anomalisa is my favorite movie he's done, so I'm sad it's not appreciated more.

    Watched this film and didn't have a single clue what was going on, then read the book and burst into tears when I found out. Charlie Kaufman is as close to a genius as any living artist can get.

    I remember I read the book YEARS ago and tonight out of insomnia I googled it again because it suddenly came to my mind out of nowhere! Isn't that strange? I just found out about this movie and now I am lying here wide awake in the middle of the night surrounded by darkness overthinking my whole life 😖

      Bts Legends I will gladly let you know what I thought about it when it releases. Maybe I might convince you to give it a peep or I might tell you to cancel your Netflix,pack a bag and leave in the middle of the night to go live in the woods in West Virginia. It’s that kind of movie it seems.

      @@klol666 what was funny for me is that I was aware of that the whole time, but the noise is so pervasive that I still couldn't shrug off the effect. Stuff like that is great for upping tension and anxiety in a scene and subtly shifting the whole tone. Looking forward to this movie

    Parts of this movie was shot in Chester New York ! I remember watching the crew work very hard on the scenes!! Great job guys !

    When I was watching it, it was creepy and pretty weird, but after watching it I couldn't sleep all night because I was really disturbed by it and second day I got sick. It got stuck in my mind and it really scared me to my core. What a powerful and profound movie! It feels like fever dream, like a nightmare that I couldn't escape. Must-watch

      I can already tell there's some new stuff going on. I'm so excited. I really like the book and I think this movie will provide a rare opportunity for me to "re-experience" the story for the first time, if that makes sense. I'm sure this movie will still surprise me.

    Jake and Lucy are like the representation of two different people that are constantly having internal discourse in my head. Jake me is the one with low self steem, self pitying and hopeless while Lucy me is the one with logical reasoning which always reminds me that I shouldn't doubt myself and gives me reasons why I shouldn't. Sadly, the Jake is like 80% of me and I listen to it like 80% of the time. And with the way I push people away and not having any interest making new friends in my late 20s, I have a feeling that I'd be sad and alone and depressed like the old Jake when I grow old.
