  • In the latest bizarre head trip from Charlie Kaufman, I'm Thinking of Ending Things follows a young woman who travels with her new boyfriend to his parents house. Upon arriving, she comes to question everything she thought she knew about him, and herself. We'll be breaking down the details of the complex story and its themes, the important elements to Jake's character we learn, and explaining the ending and what it means. LOTS to look at with this one.

@Arthur Frayn Exactly, and that happens. Reading comments they expect it as a scare of fear but not the indication of how you said it as the film gave. I've seen comments be harsh and cruel on the jeniter of his situation. It seems to me with relationship how people feel if not met, audiance can participate on the decay of someones desire, or stigma if not met or ridicule even if their old, like society commanding them not to have these emotions, as it dictates its creepy or weird. Society just doesn't get it or is stupid too connecting people right or share something that has good but is interpreted ir subverted. It gives downhill advice and makes the soul rot.
The film touched on levels and I had to stop halfway when it was in the car conversation. As I went outside the front laying on the grass at night smoking, I'm not a smoker but i needed it becouse it just hit, others films were these idealicual agenda generalists crap, they were just roll over eyes for me, topical. That was last year, it was a mirror no agendaed filters. Joker was one and then this one. Two films mirroring my circomstances and feelings making them legitimate (But audiances were mixed since the film directly was giving and showing what it was about.) That's how films or storys can be told but it's a rare case. I just sat laying on the grass thinking about my life that what I felt wasnt irrelevant, I felt alone but recognised by it, that felt good feeling ease just to know this sociaty isnt fixed (Or right or just) right as it thinks it is. The heartwarming moment was the janitor in the school empty, giving an indication that the hall is scary, but it's just the janitor, empty. Hes always known that empty place. And a hug was all he really needed in his life, someone to be with.
Society gossips relationships these days as if its materialism or teaching how to decline with doubtful advices which is put on everyone. Why people have pets and say they give interaction more then humans, that was one article, a woman from the sun newspaper said that, possibly deep down that's what they wanted, connection but thinking it didnt matter becouse sociaty or its rotting advices said so. There is so many interpretations of relationships, but watching all of them, this film tallys ups all the strains and barriers. This society heavily invests declining, a friendship and perverts it and think it's just culture or mediocre or overrated. Why adulthood and its expiernce when it comes too relationships perverts others or alienate others.
The guy that made the book just wanted to make it, and he was just chilled outside. It's kinda a warning sign too sociaty, its audiences. There is alot of big hearts out there, you are only taught or expiernce the decline. Dont put it on others, dont make stigmas on people becouse you think you have it figured out. All people want is connection.

But does the janitor die in the car? When hypothermia sets in, people can interpret this as feeling really warm, which may be why he takes off all his clothes. Does he really leave the pickup and walk into the building with the cartoon pig? Does anything in the film really happen? If Lucy doesn't exist, then why would Jake be visiting his parents with a non-existant girlfriend? If he doesn't, then the whole film is just in Jake's mind, charting events that never happened.

i just thought of something: when the girl with the rashes at the ice cream place tried to warn “lucy” to stay with her because she was scared for her and telling her not to go to the future, i thought it was because jake was going to murder her, especially since he interrupted them and insisted lucy to get in the car and move forward in time. but now that we know the whole movie was jake planning on killing himself, that line probably was jake second guessing his suicide for a second. he was basically talking to himself, the only escape from his lonely miserable life. he’s intelligent and misunderstood. unable to socialize and came from a traumatic background and spent his years working as a janitor at the same high school where he was made fun of as a teenager and even in his older years. he spends his time reading and watching films and taking bits and pieces from those writers and films and adding them into his own fantasies. thats what they meant when they touched on how unoriginal humans ideas and thoughts are. he daydreams about his past and his ideal life, being loved by a intelligent multi talented woman he can be proud of and boast about. he spent most of his time on earth alone and died alone. i pity him deeply and i understand him. i think many people fear ending up alone, being unhappy and filled with regret with the way their life ended up, and not being able to do anything about it because they’re too late and have run out of time. this film hit home for me and my mind is blown from the subtle things i missed in this movie

What an excellent theory. Yeah, the whole time it was actually the deuteragonist who was the main character. The poster and the film made you think it was going to be about Lucy ending things with Jake, when in actuality, it was his suicidal thoughts. I liked the non-linear narrative, the plot twists, and how all the random scenes and random time periods later connected together, making it Jake's past, present, then, death unfortunately. A great film that just makes you have to stop and think.

I was thinking throughout the movie that the way it flowed seemed familiar, the mind of it. That was before I knew the whole movie was literally about the old janitor’s mind. But I already compared it to my own mind, how things change in the daydreams and it keeps going in any direction, good or bad, and I get so lost. Even when the details are fuzzy and mistakes are noticable, the mind just moves on to the rest of the story. Like in the blizzard, we couldn’t even see the road, but Jake just kept driving, and that road was so incredibly long, and isolated.
I had way worse cases of maladaptive daydreaming when I was a kid, could last for half an hour, but now usually regain awareness of what’s happening after a few minutes. When I was a kid, I just accepted it, but now I dread it. It feels like I’m losing time to parasites, just erasing a part of my day to fill that void with their own realities, quite literally like losing a piece of my mind, temporarily.
But all you can do about it is keep your mind cool and focused and be aware of your surroundings, checking in on them and how you feel in your body, to stay connected to your surroundings. Hard to do all that with adhd though. But when I do wake up from an uncontrollable daydream, I make sure not to dwell on it. I move on, do something productive, consume some entertainment or educative content, depending on what my body needs, as long as it doesn’t let me keep daydreaming.
I shouldn’t have watched this so late at night. It’s 1:30 AM, my mind is absolutely shattered, and I think I’m gonna go take care of my needs now. Maybe clear the table of dishes.
Lol sorry for an essay, the words kinda just spilled onto my screen. TL;DR: yes maladaptive daydreaming is a bitch and I feel soberishly high right now. Good night

Mistakes in this review that I noticed: When talking about how many jobs the woman seemed to have he forgot the first job she describes, as a virologist. At the Tulsey Town the two young pretty girls who work there are seen earlier in the film making fun of the way the janitor walks in the hallways of the school and the nicer young woman is seen sheepishly smiling at the janitor as he walks past her on the far right side of the screen also in the school hallways, though later on in the movie than the first two girls are seen, while Jake in his fantasy is talking about how he sees outcasted students at school every day. He also failed to mention that the rashes both the nice girl and Jake seem to have are a reference to Jake's rant right before arriving at the Tulsey Town where he likens unpopularity to a disease. She and he both share the "disease" of unpopularity, hence the matching rashes. She's been inserted into his fantasy as a nice girl to oppose the mean pretty ones because he feels akin to her.

So people tend to strip at this stage which only makes it worse.

The song Jake sings from Oklahoma in the last streach of his fantasy is sung by the villian, Jud. Jud's character isn't evil. Instead he is just an outcast trying to get the girl but he comes across as a creep to all the other characters. It's clear Jake relates to this character and sees himself as a tragic creep. It's sad to think that even in the last moments of his life, in his 'happiest fantasy' Jake still sees himself as the creepy outcast. It shows how deep his insecurities lie.

I interpreted the film's ending as Jake imagining what it would be like if his relationship with Lucy did last. The end of the dance sequence is Lucy and Jake looking at each other, in front of a dead man's body. Lucy is the first to leave. Symbolically, she has told him "I'm thinking of ending things," which is what she wanted to say the whole film. The dance sequence ends on a downbeat note, just like the relationship between Jake and Lucy. The musical number, just like the dance sequence, is representative of Jake's feelings. For the whole film, we followed Lucy. We saw her behavior, we saw her feelings, we heard her thoughts. But how did Jake feel, during and after their relationship? The musical numbers are Jake's fantasy, his feelings, his thoughts about the relationship between him and Lucy, particularly the breakup. It's about what he wishes to have happened, even though it all lies in the past. He wishes Lucy never ended things. That's my interpretation of the film's ending.

    • @tilerh17
      @tilerh17 Před 3 lety +64

That's where I'm at. I feel like, for a movie like this, no single idea about how it panned out can properly accommodate every detail. I can see Lucy not being real. That idea makes sense to me. But it didn't come across in the movie because Lucy's thoughts and ideas were defined and antithetical to an ideal girlfriend. What guy fantasizes about a girl who wants to break up? Why would she ever need to get home? Wouldn't his fantasy be for them to stay at his parents'? It sure seemed that way. Instead, she's left to freeze to death in his car.
My takeaway was that it's a story of a girl who's struggling with an unfulfilling relationship. It fits some scenes better in my mind, but it doesn't explain others very well.
Like the movie says, the interpretation of your environment is entirely up to the observer

It's one of the saddest films I've ever watched, largely in the sense of how much I relate. I am not like Jake, I'm still only 20. But the bleakness and dreariness I (perhaps undeservedly) foresee in my future, how much I relate to how Jake deals with things (fantasies, suicide) and how much media has affected everything in my personality made me see myself in this film way too much. It was a depressing af movie that felt uncannily tailored for me. In the same way how certain horror movies scare some people more than others. Sadness has as many shades as fear.

Also, our daydream is sort of grounded within ourselves and memory yet changes as our environment or desire changes. Therefore, the girl constantly changes as what the janitor is experiencing or thoughts or desire changes. I mean I have so much to share about the movie. It is such a great movie! He also didn't want her to go into the basement but she disobeyed him. In the basement was his deepest fear. The deepest fear was being a school janitor for the rest of his life and squandering all of his talent and intelligence.

Maybe, or maybe not. The girl thinks of endings things with Jake, as in breaking up with him. But that's an allegory of how Jake wants to end his life. That's why when the thought crossed on Jake's head, he would change the subject so could think of something else.
If you've never had suicide thoughts, or even attempts, it would be hard for you to understand that.
Basically, yeah, the girl is her own character, a character being completely out of Jake's subconsciousness, but not in the way of schizophrenia or split personality. More like the hammer in your head reminding you how fucked up everything is. The one of your inner conversations.

Colors changing from scene to scene, the just slightly unsettling feeling, memories showing up in other memories and mixing together. The kicker being the old man in the interpretive dance killing his younger self. I saw this very much as time killing that idealized memory of himself. I greatly enjoyed this, to be honest.

The ice cream shop analysis- The two pretty girls were judgmental. You saw his fear of them. He also would barley even talk to the unattractive one with rashes. He was seeing himself through the eyes of his imaginary girlfriend to get a perspective of what she may have thought of him and what others thought of him. The girl with rashes speaks reason to him through talking with his girlfriend. She appealed to him through her, since it was all in his mind. She was the voice of reason saying “you can stay here with me” showing it’s ok to have problems or not be the best person. Maybe even saying you can find a girl with problems too and be with her, you don’t need the perfect girl. She then says “you don’t have to move forward/keep going down this road”(kinda forgot exact words) she was the voice of reason encouraging him not end up back at his school, at the end of his thoughts where his dead end life, full of hesitation and regrets had lead. The girl with the rashes offered her self and he wouldn’t let his girlfriend/himself hear it. She offered peace in knowing it’s okay to have problems, but he viewed himself to grand and narcissistically to accept himself and who he had become. He continued to imagine what life could of been like if he only lived differently and it lead to a painful regret, pushing him over the edge to suicide, where he wanted to end up all along. He used this story to help give him the courage through pain to push him where he needed/wanted to be. (I understand this may have tons of “holes” in it but it’s merely for fun. Just an interpretation. please keep negativity to yourself. Thanks)
Edit: I was thinking about the rashes on the girl. It related to the pigs with the maggots eating there flesh. The girl chose to live with the rashes and even work it a fluorescent lit environment exposing every detail on her skin and make other people ice cream (yikes). She encouraged him to live with the problems even if it was tough. In contrast pig encouraged him and showed him how terrible it was(maggots in flesh...again yikes), exaggerated his problems saying it would ultimately kill him, so he minds well finish the job. The pig talked so nonchalant and matter of fact. It was his last thoughts of reason, comforting him but also more likely fooling himself that this was the best choice.
I’m not sure about the whole “brrr” thing or the smell in the back “varnishing”. Please let me know if anyone has any thoughts. And plz like so ppl can see this :) it was a cool movie!

It's nice when films use everyday situations and small town settings to hide the deeper concepts behind the mundane.
I stopped watching gun movies long ago when I discovered psychological suspence thrillers . The phrases living the American dream and dying the perfect death has in fact worked it's way deep into our psyche. The truth is our deaths are more akin to the pig and maggots version. @@PolrisTired That's cool. As a person who had to research this movie after viewing it in order to understand exactly what it all meant, I didn't enjoy hearing this dude say that he had it all figured out after watching the first car ride and a couple flashes of an old janitor. Come on. Yeah, we learned some things, we has suspicions, but to say that the filmmakers "showed their hand" so early in the movie is bull. I felt like I was being patronized, so I watched a different video. I am content. I really enjoyed the film and I like your CZcams handle.

I also noticed at the beginning of the film that Jake's hand is of an old man. It is shown a couple of times as turns ignition or music. But once he said that he knows the school as the back of his hand, the characters surprisingly stare at the real (or fake) Plemmons's hand

Such an interesting turn. Definitely not what I was expecting when I started watching it. Thanks for the breakdown!

I'm stunned. No one's picking up on the blatant Oklahoma! references here. The bit where Lucy thinks to herself that it's harder to say 'no' than 'yes' and that one yes leads more yes's, matches the theme of Ado Annie's song "I cain't say no."
The ballet dance using idealized versions of themselves, a wedding between the two love interests, ended by a disturbed/ villainous/ creepy male character who wants to possess the female lead, ending with said possessive man murdering the girl's boyfriend with a knife? Yeah, that's all taken *straight* from Oklahoma!--that's the ending bit for Act 1 of the musical, my friend! All that's missing is saloon girls posing as "diseased Christmas ornaments" (as the choreographer put it) while being suspended in the air, and they'd have a beat for beat parody of the 7 minute scene from the musical/ movie.
He wasn't confident or bold enough to be Curly in his youth, and he's not dynamic or powerful enough to try to be Jud in his present. He can only act as these 'avatars' in his fantasy. He's *both* men, fighting over a fantasy woman that he can never have, even when he casts 'himself' in both 'roles'.

I guess it would make sense that a lot of the details changing in Jake's mind is due to his aging/confusion of reality and fiction, but I also think a lot of maladaptive daydreamers would say that it's very common to run through a single fantasy over and over again whilst changing details of it to enhance it. Hence, the vacillating outfits, backstories, names, times, etc. Jake reruns that single fantasy over and over, changing those details each time
