*HORROR LOGIC*
to get out dibshit.
The creature is one of fear, pain, cowardice. It only kills one at a time, it separates the group to weaken it and never faces them when they are together, it itself is afraid. In the end when he roars back it backs up, it knows that it can die and maybe its not as powerful as it makes others believe, it is fear, a representation of trauma, pain, and cowardice, when faced it knows it cannot stand against the strong, those willing to fight.
Sounds like my brother
Thinking about that it fits pretty well with what I know of Norse mythology. Meaning the whole “if you died fighting/with a weapon in hand you went to Valhalla” and were considered to have died a warrior’s death
@Nolan Booblackie how so is he dumb?
which would fit the norse mythology theme of personal strength and will being great virtues i could see this as a ancient story but instead of brave viking warriors facing a great foe its merely cowardly normal modern men who couldnt be expected to have the strenght of bravery required to kill it

I always thought 'the blonde woman' was the daughter from the family picture they found.
She implies to Luke that creature picks its members based on pain or trauma. And if you look carefully at that family picture, the daughter looks ill at ease and is standing away from her family like something wasn't right.

Good one , my Ubermensch friend
I really love the crossover between Dom telling Luke off for not fighting back while his friend dies, and Dom just hiding in the tress, while Phil dies. Its like it shows him as both a hypocrite and also a normal person - freezing up and not able to fight back against something that is about to kill your friend. I thought that that's why Dom kinda gets on with Luke in the last part, as he can kinda understand why Luke did what he did, and why Luke couldn't have realistically done anything else.
I always found it interesting that the monster appeared as Dom's wife before he died. Was it to put his mind at ease that way he would be a more willing sacrifice? Was it to lure him into a false sense of security and then shock him with the monsters true form in order to create that fear for it to be necessary to sacrifice him?
These are the questions I still have for the movie. I still love the hell out of it. It's one of my favorite horror movies for sure
If the god had done that to ease Dom’s mind, it would not have switched back to its true form once Dom felt safe. It wanted him to suffer.
I think it's not the creatures that chooses what you see, it's your mind tha chooses it. That's why the villegers always bow down and never look at it directly. Looking at it makes your mind see anything but the creature and you go insane.
@@tavirosu25 that makes sense, but does it have to appear as something to lure in a person to be sacrificed (like an angular fish with it's light to lure in prey) or does it need that fear to make the sacrifice? Why did it take a different form (even if it's in their mind)? It seems the guy saw the *actual* creature before it took him away and impaled him on a tree.
I'm just curious *why* and if it's necessary?
@@riakun I assume you see the real creature just before you die, after you re-experience all the guilt/shame/pain. So maybe the main guy was spared to be the last because he had the biggest trauma, while the rest of his friends didn't had that much trauma so they could be killed before him.
@@tavirosu25 that makes a lot of sense! Thanks! :)
Moral of the story: Loki needs to keep it in his pants
I'm pretty sure thats the moral of a vast amount of norse stories 😂😂
He does have a child with a horse and Loki is the one that gives birth to the offspring.
Thyr Lindberg
Fun fact: that horse actually appears in Thor 1 briefly, when Odin saves the asses of Thor, Loki, Sif, and the warriors 3 on Jotunheim from an untimely death.
@@boujiwitch4735 May I introduce you to Greek Mythology, top contender for this specific moral, Zeus.
Ahem, who said Loki wears pants? He’s a shapeshifter for Yimir’s sake!
Luke is totally getting arrested for the murder of his friends...
His injuries would collaborate the story of a bunch of cultists kidnapping and holding him. They would be skeptical if he said a giant monster did it though.
Not if they never found the bodies.
Onigiri Not finding the bodies wouldn’t make the police not believe him. If he comes out injured like that and tells the police “We were attacked by a bunch of cultists in the woods.”. It would be extremely reasonable and it wouldn’t be unbelievable for them to have difficulty finding bodies in the remote wilderness. Assuming the cultists didn’t do anything a wild animal could absolutely drag the bodies off.
@@Mizuna752 I did not say, that he should say that. If he said that he would be transferred to an asylum immediately. Best would be to say they separated and that was the last time he saw them.
Onigiri saying they were attacked by cultists would get him locked in an asylum despite his injuries? Where the hell do you live that would take someone who has obviously been assaulted and tell them they are crazy?
Hutch was definitely the smartest. Trying to keep his group together while saying that’s what the mister wanted.
I think that’s why I loved that he was the first killed as it came all of a sudden and was a shock, he was the natural leader and most likely one to get them out of it
I think Moder's reasoning behind choosing each victim was not so much the pain they endured but rather their response to it. For the whole film, Luke had to deal with the subtle truth that he had a role in his friend's death, and the creature saw this "weakness" as a desirable quality in a follower. In fact, that's what it saw in all its followers. Note how the woman who speaks to Luke, after he undoes his restraints, says "we worship it", dodging the question of whether or not she's afraid of it. That's all Moder wanted: submission, and would extend their lives as a "gift". But that's the real question of this movie: is it better to live kneeling or die standing?
I don’t understand what you mean by live kneeling or die standing. Can you expound?
@@clarkkent2005 It means to die on one's terms or live based on someone elses

Imagine if nazi invaded swedish, and encounters this monster!
Imo Luke didn't drop his to his knees when he was grabbed by the monster. The monster was trying to force him to worship it. That's why it kept pushing him down when Luke kept defying it by standing up.
I want to start a conversation discussing, why he’s (not) responsible for his friends death. My personal opinion is, that it’s in no way his fault, because if he would’ve done something, he probably would’ve been killed as well. Also he couldn’t have known about the robbers. But let me know your opinion, because I’m really interested:).
I agree it wasn't Luke's fault; they were in the wrong place at the wrong time. Dom blaming Luke was laughable to me because I can see Dom doing nothing in the store as well.
Plus the guy could of just given up his ring. No possession is worth your life. All sentimental value is lost if your dead. Oddly enough robbers weigh out the risk. They get caught robbing, burglary charge and assault with a deadly weapon-jail time with possibility of parole. Murder is a whole different story, you get detectives looking for you-increasing your chance of getting caught and if you get a homicide charge then you are looking at hard time on top of the other charges I mentioned which also reduces chance of parole. They would have to get hella lucky with a judge to get any sort of deal. Therefore if he would of did as they said, they more than likely would of not killed him just like the cashier.
I don’t think that it was because he didn’t save him but that he did absolutely nothing. Like attacking the attackers after they killed his friend. I think they understand the saving part was a bit impossible as things can happen very fast but not exacting vengeance seems like cowardice.
@@lukewhatidid1735 Yeah, id like to see you fighting robbers off. Some people naturally have the freeze response where they just freeze in the face of trauma. Not everyone gets their bearing quick enough to react.

We were going to our destination and the map told us to do a full round circle and avoid the woods. Guess what? we went straight to the woods thinking it was a shortcut and it would've made our journey easier. It was like 3pm we predicted that it would slice our journey up, originally if we took the right path and followed the map it would've been 5-6 hours of hiking. Our compass was pointing the right direction and that's what we thought, it's 7pm already quite starting to get really dark and we weren't even close to reaching the other side. It was freezing cold and we were tired. We gave up and decided to call it a day, we sat there and got our tents set up with the fire. It was dead quiet there and we literally were paranoid af when we started hearing wood branches falling of trees and noises there. One of the few moments where a forest fire is acceptable
The monster is Hel, Loki's daughter, who was in charge of the souls of those who did not qualify for Valhalla because they didn't die in battle. That's why the cult is made of non-combatants, like the sickly and the elderly, women and children. Hel herself was described as a woman who looked half-normal and half-corpse, I think this film's take on that is pretty damn cool, the monster is literally made of corpses so you could say there are parts that look normal! Anyway, Luke had a chance to die fighting but chickened out, from then on he belonged to Hel. I guess he got a second chance at the end because he found his courage and fought back, unlike the cultists who allow themselves to be killed without much resistance.

I felt bad that Luke carried so much guilt about Robert’s passing. The PTSD he will deal with is going to be something else, but I am glad he survived and proved to himself that he was not a coward.
I watched this film back when Netflix first released it on a whim, and was pleasantly surprised by how much I enjoyed it. Part of why I enjoyed it was its skilled use of atmosphere to create unease and tension rather then blatantly throwing stuff at viewers in the form of a steady parade of gruesome imagery and the cheap jump scares that so many horror flicks have been doubling down on lately.
This film went back to the basics of using the viewer's own imagination against them (at least those of us who are willing to let it do so). Its no secret that if one sets the right tone, a forest can go from being being a calm, beautiful and earthly to sinister, foreboding and generally unsettling without much fanfare, The Blair Witch Project of course showed this approach was viable years ago and honestly I never thought anyone else would pull it off as well again but this movie showed me that some directors still know how do it.
The monster being cool in design and the bit of lore we get to learn about it via the movie was just an added bonus for me at that point.
Nothing scares me more than a "the old God's" kind of scenario. It's paired with the feeling of being helpless.
Cosmic horror. I'm still waiting for a good Cthulhu movie
Yeah, i see what you mean, its called space horror and creates a feeling of horror by showing your insignificance and powerlesness facing a greater force like the ancient gods. It is very present in stories from h.p lovecraft like the cthulluh mythos
You may want to give The Endless or The Void a shot then, both deal with cosmic horror elements and anicent beings much greater than us existing (though the latter has less focus on them, it's still implied).
a very important thing though is that in norse mythology, no one is above fate.

"The blond woman" is Anna, the mother in the picture in the wallet that they find under the old tent from 1984. Also, I didn't get the feeling that the Jotunn _let Luke go,_ but rather it was at the limit of its boundaries and could not leave the forest into the open. Hence why it screams in anger, and Luke screams back in victory. This makes the ending where Luke is transformed by having faced his fear and overcome it...not simply because the Jotunn gave him a pass. Like Anna said, either worship it or die. The Jotunn would have killed Luke at that point but it was physically incapable of going any farther.
It can change the forest though, he could have made the forest infinite for him. He decided he was worthy to leave

Probably my favorite thing about horror movies is how, when the survivor escapes, it's treated as a successful ending for them as though they aren't going to be going straight to prison for mass murder. Like this guy. I'm sure his friends' families aren't going to buy his story when their loved ones never come back from their camping trip with him, and that forest is going to be flooded with police and searchers who'll either be killed or who'll find all those corpses in the trees and blame him for them. I'm not even joking, imagining the obvious consequences really is my favorite part of horror movies.
Well he does have a mark from the ritual. So he could say they were all attacked and only he survived. And some of the followers are still out there so theyd send officers in and nobody would come out so his story would be validated

the blonde woman was the mother in the family that got lost in the 80s.
Edit: some of you suggested it was the daughter. I rewatched and I agree. She was clearly the outsider of them all.
YOO
I think she's actually the daughter. The mom looks to have been at least in her 30s in the 80s so would have been in her 60s. I know the immortality thing might affect her aging but the woman also looks more like the girl in the photo than the mother.
Vadalia yea the girl in the photo was kind of shunted of too the side a little and looked kinda sad.
I doubt it’s the daughter. Remember, the monster only picks those who are going through an immense amount of emotional pain. Little kids usually dont go through that, especially if they are from a normal family where the parents clearly love them enough to take them camping.
Im assuming it was the mother, but she didnt age due to the monsters ability to cease the aging process for his followers.

Movies that can scare someone who regularly finds comfort in forests are so good. I think there was one series that made me feel this way, and that was "zone blanche" (black spot in English). I don't even know if it was translated into English but, it has the same vibe. Less giant Joturn and more police investigations, but still old God in the forest.
I love the fact that the tag line was "they should have gone to Vegas".
I’m a Vegas native and I’ve gotta say I prefer the terrifying monster forest over this hell hole any day.
@@dottyorange7270 i agree
It was later changed to 'they should have gone to Ibiza' after the Vegas massacre.
Never go off the path when you’re hiking like that. That’s just an idiot move.
That’s rule no. 1 of not fucking with the forest
Agreed especially if the "short way" is through a forest. Not because of scary monsters and stuff but realistically it's really, and I mean REALLY easy to lose your way and keep straight, you don't know the terrain and you may stumble upon the territory of some wild predator.
I really loved the the soundtrack of this movie. Also the acting is phenomenal. Right from Lukes facial expressions and looks of terror when he is in the store with Robert getting murdered.
At first, I felt for Luke for not intervening in the robbery and coming to Rob's defense, however I then realized that the entire reason why they stepped foot into the store was because of Luke wanting to get furthered drunk and party. Rob just wanted to go home, just like the other friends. It was Luke's entire decision to enter into the store, and Rob being a GOOD friend, accompanied him. Luke should've came to Rob's defense. What he did was very dishonorable and I do agree had he stepped in, Rob would've probably been alive. I wouldn't want to remain friends with someone who wouldn't defend me in a life or death situation. I don't respect Luke for that.
In a situation like that with 2 guys coming into a store with a knife and a goddamn machete, your fight or flight response will be immediately triggered and your judgement will be heavily impaired by adrenaline. I don’t think it’s fair to judge the actions of someone in a situation like that especially since you likely haven’t gone through something like that yourself
You could also say Rob could've just gave up his wedding ring.
My guy Luke was a normal person not one of your bannermen who would have to follow you to death lmao. Im kind of concerned for your friends and the absurd expectations you have for them.
When they find the tent that picture is actually important. It's a picture of the girl (and her family) who covered his ears when he was tied to the wall in the house. The girl knew real pain because the family didn't love her like they did her brother. You can safely assume this based on the family hugging tightly and smiling in the photo while she was off to the side and frowning.
Wow great assessment gotta re watch
Think she's the youngish blonde?
dayum 😳
It is quite possible that she simply was not in a good mood at that exact moment.
@@gaila.9852 Nah, therr's still the hugging and distant distance between her and her family
The final scream is so damn epic, I was going to scream with him too.
I did lol I was too happy
I felt that scream bro

I felt that the monster fed on people's fear, and also on their forced adoration. Luke, at the end, loses his fear and finally finds the courage that he had been lacking.
I think it might be an understatement to say finding Hutch's corpse strewn about the trees was unsettling
You and your buds are hiking in a foreign country. One twists his ankle.
I have a great idea: let’s leave the smooth beaten path because walking through a dense, uncharted, trail-less forest and up some hills is better for your mobility!
Worst idea ever, even without the monster.
Right? I mean, okay, they said the trail they were following wasn't used much, but even so, the forest would be even less likely to have anyone who could help wandering by, and if anyone comes looking for them (like say someone from the hotel, where they presumably made reservations, who might know that they were hiking in and might send Search & Rescue when they don't turn up on time), they would be easy to find on the open trail where they're expected to be, and next to impossible to find somewhere in the depths of that forest, even without taking cultists and Jotunns into account.
I was yelling at them to just make a travois and then go back to the trail, myself. But then, I grew up in a very similar wilderness in Canada.
KryssLaBryn Yeah, even from my limited time in the scouts, I know that a seeming “shortcut” through dense, rugged forest is actually gonna take longer than the seemingly long path due to the difficulty of the terrain. It’s never worth it to stray from the path for what looks like an easy shortcut on a flat map.
that one guy did say that the shortcut would've been the main route if it was easy or something
i don’t understand why they didn’t just turn around and go back?

Very helpful, thanks! Love this movie! Extremely original. I actually loved the ending! Very impressive movie. The graphics, especially of the merging of the store & forest, were totally outstanding! I always pick up on details like that

When dom was looking into the woods I legit was expecting the monster to come out lookin like a 4'2 gremlin or sumthing
FoundFlix is absolutely positively awesome! 😁😂🤣 Thank you homie!
I have to say I actually laughed a little at him burning those living corpses, punching that old lady, and shooting the monster. Literally the calmest he was the whole time. Like he was so nonplussed, like he's seen weirder. He's like yep this is weird, whelp better burn it down just in case.
And punching old women, though I think it's both safer and less prisony if you just stick with the demons lol
*casually sets screaming chair creatures on fire*
This ain't even my whole night lol
I took it as "You're in for a dime - you're in for a dollar" kind of moment. This was his moment change - he took action instead of escaping. Also after being chased around by a monster for a few days old ladies are bound to seem less scary.
+Jaylin Broan Cmon....you telling me killing demons with fire wouldnt be satifisying?
so if Dom didnt fall, they wouldnt go through the forest and the movie would have never happend?
If they don't go, dom doesn't fall.....
If the director of this movie held his pee a little longer on any random day, the movie may never have been made in the first place.
@Lonnie Dunn if they would of just all went home after the bar then nobody would of died
@Lonnie Dunn this thread. Lol
@Lonnie Dunn dude should've given up his ring. Usually wedding rings aren't that expensive and while of course it holds emotional value is it worth telling a man with a weapon no? I'm sure your spouse would understand if you said they took my ring. They had a weapon and robbed a store.
Those kinds of meniscus tears can happen out of nowhere for very little reason and are debilitating and causes people to not be able to walk without assistance. I found this reason for the shortcut realistic and compelling because of how bad those injuries are
What I understood about this movie was.. it was about the conscience of Luke that kept on haunting him for a long time. That whenever he gets another chance to save his friend then he will do whatever it takes. Until in the end of the movie, Luke was able to escape from the monster which meant like he was also able to free himself from the guilt he was carrying for long time.
I liked that this movie actually showed the monster and didn’t do all the killings off screen.

When he punched her, I couldn't help but bust out laughing! It caught me so off guard.
I just shouted at the screen,
_You can't just do that!_ *wheeze*
It just goes against horror movie tropes, and I absolutely loved it.
i cheered!
I gave an audible "fucking right!" When watching. Like, obviously deck the bitch!
The woods represented the confusion of Luke's guilty conscience and the monster represented Luke's fear to accept that he was not responsible for his friend's death. As soon as he left the woods, the monster could no longer hurt or scare him. I actually wonder if the group of friends ever went hiking at all...
Orrrr, just hear me out…absolutely no interpretation, just a fucked up forest with a Norse god running rampant playing 3D chess with the friends groups minds lol
Yes because walking through rocky, uneven, slippery, rock and tree filled forest will be much gentler than a well warn trail on Doms ankle. Genius.
Hutch dumping out the whole of the flask probably was a stab at Luke, for wanting to drink more and go to the off license resulting in their loss. You can see the sternness on Hutch's face as he does it
I was thinking something similar. I'm guessing that they had given up drinking or something to that effect (one even mentioned he can't do it). Pouring out the last of it was a statement of making sure that there was no more drink... or something? Maybe? I dunno. That's my thought.
it wasnt a stab at him, it was out of respect. giving him the most drink of the five friends.
Lol hutch is my username and my nickname lmao hahahaahaaaaa ummm :(
I thought they were just making a joke about how Rob maybe used to drink more than the others?
That's a normal real ritual for dead homies. It's called pour out a lil liquor.
Douchebag Dom is the reason they go through the spooky forest...then makes them deviate from said shortcut....
Dom is also the one who voiced his Grudge against Luke for his inaction in helping Robert from the junkies in the store. From a certain perspective you could say that Dom is an allegory of Luke's guilt guiding him down the path that will lead to the inevtible confrontation with the Jotunn.
Really incredible summary. Great job.
The jötnar were varied and could be anything from this sort of thing, to the unimaginably beautiful. They’re part of the Norse mythology. This jötunn is a modern fiction, but is apt. I love the creature design.
