The Ledges of The Back 40 | Mountain Biking Northwest Arkansas

  • On today’s ride we’re finally digging into the Back 40 trail system, starting with one if its most iconic trails: The Ledges. This 3 mile stretch of premium, black diamond trail riding has something for everyone. Located in Bella Vista, the Ledges trail traverses the beautiful Arkansas landscape, at times exposing riders to drop offs of up to 20 feet. Let’s see if we have what it takes to ride, rather than walk, our bikes across this ragged, rip roaring good time of a trail. I’m your host Jordan Byron, and you’re watching Jordan Byron Mountain Biking: Arkansas Edition.
The Ledges presents riders with a handful of distinct and unique variations of trail riding. The first section should be pretty familiar to anyone who’s spent time riding in northwest Arkansas. Terrain covered with loose stone over hard packed soil is a double edged sword. On one hand, you can get up to speed and maintain that speed with minimal effort, but use bad technique and your tires will slide right out from under you. Soil consistency aside, the trail builders have done something truly remarkable with this trail. Their use and understanding of the vertical is something like I’ve never seen.
And while on their own these first few minutes of riding are worth celebrating, that’s wasn’t enough for these Arkansan artisans. They built more …
Now would be a great time to touch on the main attraction of today’s ride: The actual ledges on The Ledges trail. Now I’m no stranger to technical riding, but this next stretch of riding really challenged me and made it clear how The Ledges earned a black diamond rating.
From here on out the name of the game is flow, with only a few climbs sprinkled in to make up for the loss of vertical. But those climbs are totally worth it. This section of the Ledges rivals most of the lift access downhill parks I’ve been to. It’s that good.
Thank you so much for watching! Next up, we’re going to take a look at some of the highlights from the Back 40 Loop itself. Until then, you know what to do, get out there and ride!

Your use of music was brilliant!! I live in Bentonville and agree that we have done a great job in making it a mecca for mountain bikers.

I think as riders a lot of us take for granted the talent and hard work that people put in to building trails. It's truly a work of art. This is no exception. Can't wait for the weather to get better so I can get back on my bike and enjoy the trails again. Great video Jordan!

A masterpiece, both the trail itself and your faithful capture of everything that was going through your mind as you were riding it. It certainly makes me want to go back and do another lap of The Ledges, despite having to pay the Back 40 gods to do it!

Thanks Ryan. I wish I had the cameras rolling for our second rip down Ledges. Punched up to 11! But man what a great time.

Looks like a fun ride. I liked when you changed the color grading mid ride. That was a cool effect.

I loved that effect too. It just adds that little bit of style which makes it pop.

I really hope you can hit this as well. To put it in perspective: We had the option to hit almost any trail system twice and we chose Back 40

Nice video Jordan! I just got home from my first trip there. We didn't get to the back 40, but the all the riding there is unreal!

Nice Kyle! What was your favorite place to ride?

    • @CobraKyle

@@JordanByron I think it had to be Coler. We went and did Esther's loop which had this amazing dual slalom downhill track. Slaughter Pen was legit too. Only had 3 days to ride and it wasn't nearly enough time!

Hey Jason. I flew but a few people in our group drove and brought our bikes with them. Is it worth the trip? Absolutely.

Not sure. My wife and I just had our first kid so the editing has taken a backseat for a bit. But hopefully I’ll get back into the swing of things soon enough. Thanks for asking. I was starting to think no one cared where I disappeared to haha.

Jordan Byron holy crap congrats man! I got a 2 year old myself and understand. But your videos are top notch. Find the time and you’ll grow quickly! I’m going live on my channel tonight tuning my bike and loading up camera stuff and bike in a small SUV. Should go fine haha

Ledges tech = cool, good workout, good practice Ledges downhill = practically nonexistent, not comparable to a bike park in any sense
