  • Architect Joe van Rooyen creates a family home overlooking a nature reserve in the heart of Johannesburg. As a busy cardiac anaesthetist, owner Ronet Steyn doesn't get a lot of downtime, but when she does she wants to relax in a home that's made for a family but capitalises on the beautiful surroundings. Built on a 3 200 square metre plot, the sprawling home features two lounges and four bedrooms split over two main levels with two half levels. An open plan kitchen and dining area was important to Ronet as she loves to cook for her sons, Jaco and Tiaan, as well as their friend Nic van Zyl who's become a part of the family. While Ronet now spends much of her time working in hospitals, she used to run a small landscaping business on the side with a friend when her children were younger. Gardening is in her blood, a passion she inherited from her green-fingered mother. Putting in the stairs required removing a huge rocky outcrop and explosives couldn't be used as it was too close to the house. Fortunately, Ronet's gardener was able to use an axe to painstakingly chisel his way through to the point where they could build 25 steps to the top. Despite all the challenges Joe overcame to help create Ronet's dream space, he's still most proud of the fact that, four years after the house has been built, Ronet still calls to say she's still discovering new aspects of the house's beauty at different times of the day.
