Because it's true that's why. Many people in this country are literally living in fantasyland and every week it seems like a new superhero movie comes out. i collected comic books as a kid and loved them. I was happy when the first Spiderman movie hit the big screen. I never thought it'd happen. then they do another and another and another, and the Avengers, there's another and another etc. I was at a party last summer where grown men in their 50's spent hours talking about superheroes and character plots. I got the subject changed once or twice to a new one and I couldn't believe they would end up talking about it yet again. Mindless.

I don’t think the focus of his mssg. was on the superhero genre- he was just poking fun at Hollywood and using the influx of superhero movies to deliver a more powerful message. Such as taking charge/ responsibility of your own life. Being able to compartmentalize and let entertainment be just that- entertainment. Don’t let movies (or anything for that matter) condition your thinking and be cognizant of anything/ anyone trying to do so, etc. And considering he did it within a light- hearted/ comedic 6 min. segment is fairly brilliant. But at the end of the day, you and I can still agree to disagree.

I disagree with the premise of Maher's argument. I don't think people like superheroes because they want one to come save them. Rather, I think it's more that we wish WE were like those superheroes -- that we had the power to do the things they can do and be the saviors ourselves.
I think it's hilarious that Bill Maher - one of how many in the pack of 'humorous news shows' chastises someone else for chasing what's popular. Not that I don't think he's funny, and not that I don't agree with him about Trump - I just think it's funny that he blames it on a type of movie. Or does he blame violence and sex on video games, too?
Or, and here’s another ridiculous theory, people like them because they’re fun.
I mean by this stupid logic, people watch anchorman because they want to be a newsman. They watch Kingpin because of the siren call of bowling. They watch the fly because they want to turn into a hybrid bug species. They watch a nightmare on elm street because they want to fight a dream demon. They watch Forest Gump because they want to be a mentally challenged Vietnam vet who wins at life but loses his best girl along the way.
What’s funny is if you actually watch the movies, you find out the lives of superheroes are awful. That’s the dream, to be blessed with enormous power and bury almost everyone you know by the time you’re 35.

But I do think there's much more of an obsession with superheroes than with any of the other things you mentioned, so it might require a bit more explanation.
@@johnjsal What I want people to do is add up all the cop/rescue worker shows, lawyer shows, nurse/doctor shows... add up all of these professional shows over the last 25 years and then show that side by side with fantasy shows over that same time period. And when they are done with that exercise, add up all the prestige shows over that same time period and put say a Breaking Bad or Game of Thrones (first four seasons) side by side with its equivalent in the 70s/80s/90s, and when they can't find its equivalent then the Bill Maher's have to do a 10 minute segment pointing out how much better, smarter, and more emotionally challenging culture is today, fair is fair after all.
Some of us simply never wanted to watch the cop shows and over the last 20 years have had a lot more options available to us. Some of it is technology has caught up to stories that have survived in the culture for over 80 years now (see the X-Men for example). Some of it is there is simply a lot of demand for action movies and spectacle. Some of it is your Gifted, Supergirl, Flash, Vampire Diaries, etc. were aimed at children and teenagers, not adults. It's weird to not note that distinction when you're calling people children for watching them, right Bill? Seems an important distinction when a lot of these shows are not created with an adult audience in mind.
Long story short, reducing our culture down to comic book entertainment is stupid, as is becoming concerned about the culture because of people switching interest from procedural cop dramas to superhero shows. As to the psychology point, people might be too obsessed with comic book material, I grant that, but I think if that's the lens through which we are thinking about our culture, might sports fan's behavior be a thousand times more problematic?

I'm not really sure Bill truly understands the Superhero genre enough to warrant lumping *Conman the Imbecile* in with everything else. Superhero stories can be simplified into more believable movies that lack a *LOT* of luster. The suspension of disbelief is what most of the mainstream movie goers crave. The die-hard geeks and nerds will see it for the source material it's based off of, but that's not a bad thing.
I understand the stance you're taking, but what you said at the end is all about what the every-day comic reader already knew and reads comics for. They want to be their own superhero.

It was funny but it lost me on the logic. Most superhero stories are told in first person perspectives, ie we don't as audience members feel like we're being saved by Superman, but that we are Superman. Not to mention there's really nothing that this emergence of comic book fandom has done to help Trump.

I feel like some writers tossed out the ideas of a bunch of superhero-related jokes about the Trump administration and compromised them into this monologue because the argument's such a reach. Heroic stories, realistic and supernatural alike, are found in every time period of every culture. It's just that right now the idea of fantasy and sci-fi superheroes are international hits at the box office and highly-rated TV programs in an unprecedented frequency. There's no evidence that the correlation of gullible Trump voters and Marvel & DC live-action projects popping up at the same time has any causation, and I'd especially call bullshit on it because, hell, is there even a significant amount of overlap between these two groups? Seriously, I don't think there's a lot of questions of cinematic taste done by Public Policy Polling.
