Kristin, I hope things are going well for you! I grew up around Lake Ontario, and would slip on the ice and bruise my coxyx or tailbone each year, as if it were an annual event. Then it would hurt the whole year long, easing up only slightly before I would inevitably slip and fall on it again. As a 58 year old woman, I've just started a keto diet, and am heartened by the stories I hear from folks. I'm sad to leave some of my favorite foods, but good health is so important to a happy life, so I'm ready to work it. I hope things are going better for you!

The best answer i read was...
Start low enough to achieve the purple color in the urine test strips.
Then sdd 5 carbs more for 4 days.
    Check more test strips again.
If you're still in the purple, then add another 5 carbs per day, for 4 more days, and so on, till your test strip doesn't show in the purple.
Then back off 5 carbs per day, snd that should be your limit.
If you eat more than once, per day....
It may be best if you dont consume ANY carbs st all, except in just one meal.

I just recently started low carb because I put on belly fat over the years and have been diagnosed with pre diabetes. I’m working on reversing that. I’ve already lost some weight plus I didn’t feel bad at all when I went to low carb. I took to it right away. I am female 65 years old and I realize this is a life change not a temporary fix. It is proven to help weight loss and can reverse pre diabetes and diabetes type 2 if you really stick to it, so it’s a no-brainer for me. I try to stay around 50g of carbs per day.

Good info. Please address the effects of gluten on blood sugar levels. Even “low carb” items such as tortillas can be devastating to blood sugar levels. I am diabetic and have had disastrous levels from foods that are touted as safe. I realize not everyone has issues with gluten ( I didn’t know I did) but elimination of it can be so helpful in keeping blood sugar levels down.
The Mission brand low carb tortillas claim 3 net carbs per serving. I had one after a test result of 85. Within 45 minutes I tested at 180. Terrifying!

Lynn Berdan , I am diabetic as well. Do you know and understand the term glycemic index and glycemic load. All grains will cause a spike in blood sugar. So just because a food is low carb does not mean low glycemic index. Most brand gluten free use potatoe or rice, which will spike sugar. If you must have a “bread” then look for keto online they are extra expensive.
Might want to look for other ways to eat as in a bowl or wrap in lettuce.
Gluten free mean wheat free which is a start, but us diabetic have to test all foods. Even honey and apple spiked my sugar.
I have found best diabetes helpful with Dennis Pollock he test food with his not diabetic wife. He is on you tube as well.
Vegetables and protein seem to work. One brownie and it is good bye sugar control for that day and maybe even the next.
I have found Berberine to be helpful on a day that I was not mindful, or if I know it will be a higher carbs meal. I do not take insulin. On Metformin ER.
For the first few months test your meals and record what you eat, then you know. But yeah wraps can still make you reading jump 40 pr more points. I ask myself I’d this spike worth it to me. Or would I rather have a low HbA1c. Many good doctor with say you want in the lower 5.0s rather than the prediabetic 5,7% or above.
I want to keep my feet, eyes, kidneys and brain. Diabetes can be as bad as cancer if not taken very seriously.
Best of luck and may you get low sugar an hour after a meal or snack.

Dr Becky I was wondering if you could answer a question. Ive Watch your videos on how many carbs to have for low-carb versus keto and my dilemma is I’m trying to figure out the appropriate macro for fat and protein if you’re doing low-carb, not keto. Because if you’re doing low-carb and you’re eating no more than 75 g of carbohydrates per day then what percentages should your fat / protein macro be set at so that your not being counter productive and just eating high fat. Because the high fat is mainly for ketosis right? If you have a video on this already maybe you could let me know and I’ll watch it. I’ve been searching trying to find the answers to this question lol.

The key is to eating the good carbs that are mostly from certain groups of vegetables with the correct amount of fat. This helps our T-2 & T-3 levels from thyroid hormones that help us not only burn fat, but it also burns any sugar related carbs. I dont eat any sugar carbs, even low keto lemon bars can slow down T-2 &T-3 levels. If I make lemon bars I usually only eat them as a treat for maybe one serving per week, I do use only Swerve as the sweetener too, not regular sugar. The best veggies that are good for overall body and, the T levels are Asparagus, this is also good for the kidneys even fights off cancer.

I was a sugar addict. Had 6-7 sprites a day, ate icecream every night with chockolate and whipped cream plus sprinkles. Did this for a year gained 30 lbs. Now I tried to do 50 carbs or less without gradually going down, I was so sick. Now Its been a week 1/2 I'm at 70-80 carbs drinking Sprite 0 and if I want icecream I do the heavy Whipping Cream and add vanilla extract with some organic Justin's peanut butter or strawberries. I'm eating salad 4 times a week with meat. The first few days I felt so sick, I had to eat a piece of wheat bread with peanut butter to get carbs fast. I'm finally feeling good, no bread now and have bought healthy alternatives to sugar and flours etc. I had to change my lifestyle. Always been 145 my entire life, until I went to 185 age 42 at 5'5. I already feel like I've lost 7 pounds or so. Especially in my belly region where I gained the weight. 🤞I am focused and will stay on this lifestyle for ever

I'm averaging less than 50 grams of carbs a day and about 1350 calories, my metabolism must be so slow it's going in reverse. Plus I exercise six days a week and intermittent fast 15 hours a day.

Maybe your caloric intake is low. If you're doing low carb, it's best to up your calorie intake between 1800-2000 calories for your weight. Also, only eat lean foods. No sweets aka refined carbs. I only know because when I do a low carb diet and don't eat enough calories for my size, I gain the water weight of even just maintain. Also, increase your water intake.

I have insulin resistance that doesn't seem to be going any time soon so I get zero weight loss unless I keep daily carbs to under 20g, which can be frustrating to maintain every day for years long term.
I read that for people who are only within the first 6 months of IR that it's reversible- I've had it for 3 years that I know of and possibly longer than that.
My whole life I've been a sugar and carb addict and I'm almost 43 now.

Being a vegetarian, I have a hard time keeping carbs under 20 as well. I don't think I could sustain that for life. I'm trying to keep carbs under 50. I'm 57 and my weight wasn't budging until I began to intermittent fast for 16-20 hrs a day (watching what I eat as well of course, but not full on keto as I eat fruit). Walking about 30 mins at least every other day is also helping my metabolism. It took me a year to lose 20 lbs. My stomach still looked huge from the insulin resistance, but now that I've lost 5 more lbs and over a year later, my stomach is finally starting to look smaller. So it took me a little over a year to get to this point (from 170 to 145 lbs). But in the beginning I wasn't intermittent fasting for as long as I am now and I was occasionally cheating. Now the weight seems to be coming off faster. I still have at least 20 lbs to go (I'm only 5 ft tall). So it just takes time and patience to reverse the IR but it can be done.

I seem to gain weight within a day( measuring waist ) If I eat more than 40 carbs a day, eaven on 1000 calorydiet/ day. I seem to get a smaller waist If I stay under 20 gr/day on a 1000 calory diet. Then I get carbs from dairy, eggs, vegetables, nuts. If I eat only leafy greens and meat, fish, chicken, oliveoil, coconutbutter or butter and eat once or twice a day, only Tea or water for breakfast and on evening Then I loose noticeable weight.

Isn't it dangerous to be on a keto diet? I was told by a nurse practitioner that your body could go into ketoacidosis which could be very harmful . also doesn't your brain need gluclose to function properly. I try to keep my carbs at 50 grams for each meal with a total of 150 grams a day. Also if I eat something with sugar I eat some protein to slow the digestion of the sugar.I find your videos very enjoyable and informational

I was just going to say I do well off 60 to 75 grams of carbs per day and then the doctor stated that in the video. Yeah I was in full ketosis and my body felt so strange, I had palpitations and I felt weak and I felt like I was going to pass out. I didn't like the feeling much less the keto body odor that was horrible lol so I had to revive my body with a serving of black beans and garlic. Wow I felt human again and I went back to my usual carb amounts and doing great. So keto is not for me but low carb is great. Lost 15 pounds this month and I'm 51 so I feel that's an amazing accomplishment for someone that doesn't lose weight too easy at this stage.

    • @thisistheday3369

You have to be careful to make sure you get enough potassium from avocados or pistachios or from other low carb sources to keep from getting palpitations. My daughter has struggled with that a lot. Also Magnesium and salt plus around 600 mg of calcium. It's really easy to get very depleted doing keto.

I use a glutathione patch (glutathione is your most powerful antioxidant) and it completely stopped my headaches which I had had almost constantly for 4 years. I get them from Patch md. I was using NAC (taken orally) which makes your body produce glutathione, but the NAC caused constipation... and since glutathione isn't well absorbed taken orally, I found the patches. They are 500 mg of glutathione and 600 mg NAC with other stuff that helps you absorb it. Glutathione is sometimes used to help people heal after surgery... and NAC is the only thing that helps people who have liver failure from acetamenafen overdose.
Glutathione is good for immunity, detox, and metabolism... so maybe it would help you with your weight loss too... Anyway, this is what worked for me... Do a little research and you may find it worth trying.

  • @brookealiasemeraldfox8192

I’ve gotten myself down to around 50g of carbs a day or less so am borderline keto right now. I switched to cooking almost all of my own meals, almost no sugar (except dark chocolate) and eat only from a restricted food list of things I know I can tolerate. I take phentermine and metformin along with these dietary changes. I get a ton of mood swings and am barely managing, but I’m doing it. The weight is dropping by maybe 1-2 lbs every other week lmao 🤣

I follow a vegan diet and a typical day of eating consists of about 80g of carbs. I think staying below 50g would be virtually impossible for me as I eat so many vegetables - I stick to low carb veggies but when that's most of what you eat in a day it would still be extremely difficult staying below 50g and not starving/depriving yourself! Since cutting out refined carbs my body has changed drastically, I feel that sticking to around 80g on a vegan diet is the most sustainable for me long term.
