Great work, Ashley and Brandon. This geek ate it all up. The cars were parked on the grass at the time of the premiere of This Is Elvis. When the tours started the following year, the cars were displayed under the carport. I remember the two Stutzes, the Ferrari, Pink Cadillac, and a random assortment that included trikes, a Jeep and a snowmobile. The cars stayed there until the car museum opened. Glad you discussed the glass blocks at top of stairs, but still a mystery!

Hi Ashley! Loved this video. I toured the house many times between 1985-1990 (and many times since), however I never saw any cars on the grass in the backyard. I do clearly recall them being pulled up in the back carport area - I even seem to recall that carport are wasn't covered in the 80s - but never on the grass itself. And yes, you could walk right up to them in the carport!

Hi Here in Oregon a lot of southern-style homes were built after the Oregon Trail. I was told that a home here in my town that has similar windows, were opened similar to doors in the summer to let the air flow through the house like an air conditioning to stay cool.

  • @AlwaysElvis
    @AlwaysElvis Pƙed 2 lety +1

There was significant architectural changes from the original 'Moore' floor plans to the floor plans during Elvis time of ownership. As stated in the video the kitchen area was separated in two with a wall with a what was originally a 'Breakfast Room' when you went through the door from the dining room. There was a small room in the back center of the house that was a 'Garden Room' in the 'Moore' floor plan. The upstairs layout was also changed where Elvis bedroom and office are today. The office area was actually the 'Moore' daughters bedroom and there was an alcove area that had two separate doors to the master and daughters bedroom. That was altered with the alcove removed during Elvis time. The glass blocks on the upstairs landing back wall allowed for light to be brought in to a short pathway behind it that was between the dressing room and bathroom area for the 'Moore' daughter. The Elvis floor plan opened this two separate bathroom/dressing area to one large room. Because of this open concept in that room, curtains were placed on the stairwell landing to cover the glass blocks.

This was a good interview. Seriously consider a “Part 2”, that covers speculation on the upstairs original layout and renovations and other interesting features. Take a look at the opening scene of “This is Elvis”, and compare what you see as the actor briefly walks through the upstairs hallway. You can really see a lot in the short span of the filming there. Maybe have Brandon sketch his thoughts on that layout (considering the angled walls leading to the dressing room and Lisa’s room) vs. the original layout which apparently had a closet at the end of that hall. Billy Smith of any other member of his family would be a GREAT source for factual information.

Awesome. Very interesting. There’s one thing I don’t understand, I have wondered about this many times. the glass blocks with the bathroom behind it is on the landing to the right are a few more steps to go up to Elvis’s office and bedroom, so you go through his office to get to the bathroom, are there steps going down into the bathroom or are the glass blocks in between floors? I hope explain this enough for you to understand what I’m talking about. Thank you both for the video..

Back when Graceland built, the way people lived was different. Bedrooms had few if any closets, they used ward robe furniture for cloths. Dressers for linen's. Hutches for staples, like flour, sugar, etc. Matter of fact in the basement there is a small room where a body guard stayed - at one time that might have been all canned goods. When I was a teen we had a house a lot like Graceland and built in the 30s. The front had an entry to a second door. That entry was always full of coats and boots and shoes. Our kitchen had a stairway that went to the 3rd floor so it had no attic. The basement had a huge boiler. First floor had large registers where heat came out. The formal living room had a grand piano that came with the house. It would be a big job to convert these homes to heat & ac.

Hi Ashley, GREAT video as usual! Sorry it took so long to comment on this, but LOTS going on here. This is a perfect time to ask you about something I've been wanting to ask you about for a long time. Have you ever heard of or saw the Graceland imitation house in Orlando, FL? You probably have at least heard of it? I know that you're a Graceland lover as I am. Everything about the place just amazes and intrigues me. It's like our modern day castle. lol With this video, it made me think of again the Graceland imitation in FL. Some say it's an exact replica, it's NOT. It's a tribute at best. Don't get me wrong, it's cool. And it would give average people like ourselves a chance to have the next best thing to Graceland (maybe)? It's like half the size at approx. 8500 sq. ft. And it could look closer it being a brick, instead of limestone. I'm not sure as far as interior how close that is, if at all? Not a lot on that. Anyway, I just wanted to bring this up to you and get your thoughts on it. Here is a link to a CZcams video of it and and the address if you wanted to Google Map it. czcams.com/video/XNscJpS0ABQ/video.html czcams.com/video/CAskd-ThDM8/video.html 6987 Hyland Oaks Dr, Orlando, FL 32818 Thank you for all that you do! Another Great one Ash. I believe the dinning room window either had to have been a door or had been intended to have been a door at one time. It is different than all the other windows and has “side lights” (narrow windows alongside doors) as a door would have. And the example your guest had of the other like window, I don’t think those were side lights, but rather shutters he was seeing.

There is so much more to learn. The white door in old kitchen picture has a glass hand plate and no knob. I think it is a back and forth swing door, similar to the one that went to the dining room, however it is lacking the small windows.
The old kitchen pictures looks to me as the table might actually be a peninsula from the sink wall of the built in cabinets. This appear to be sitting height (30”) as opposed to cabinet height (36”). The remodel added the stepped down between the two heights that you see now.
I have found a picture of Graceland under construction. It is faded and water damaged, but shows the front of the house and is taken just north of the dining room. It appears that the “service room” and presumably servant’s room are not there. There is a temporary fence around the construction, and sky goes all the way to the ground next to the northern chimney.
I am guessing the “addition” might have been a change order during late construction. You can find a pink “Graceland Farm” brochure (May 1942) that has the addition. There would be a considerable beam required to hold up the stone siding going east from the chimney. Today you can see a drop in the ceiling level of the kitchen right where the beam is. The far end ceiling is about 6” lower.
Also from the laundry furnace room there is a heating chase that goes under the main floor and up through the servants room to the attic of the one story area. From this attic it appears to go south and into Lisa’s room and up into the main attic at the northern most end. Lisa’s room has a wall of built in cabinets on the north side to hide this chase.
As for the glass block, Art Deco was contemporary to the build time but not the homes style. Glass block seems to be in and then not, and then in
.
I don’t like it and I’m guessing Elvis didn’t either.
The ceilings downstairs are about 9 feet. There are a couple of guesses as to why. The old
.old
houses of this style had ten or twelve foot ceilings and transom doors to manage heat.
The reason, I think, Graceland does not is the central attic fan. The basement rooms all have casement windows (now covered) below grade level to let in cool air. There is a breaker box near the stairs to the basement with switch breakers which might turn on the fan. One of them is labeled exhaust fan.
Square D (the breaker manufacturer) markets the breakers as convenient switches as well as breakers.

You bring such a gracious charm to your teaching videos. I know there are many hours into the research. Thank you for what you do.
You might ask Brandon for me on this one

I think there is a structural misstep in Graceland. The living room fire place is directly above the one in the TV room. Structurally the chimney flue of the lower fireplace must jog either north or south to miss the one from above. Looking at the blue prints and house, it appears the architect chose north, or towards the center hall of the house. Looking directly at the living room from the outside front confirms the two flue structure above the roof is offset to the north of the centerline of the living room. It’s not centered between the front windows as the fireplace box is inside.
The problem this creates is on the backside of the roof. There are two “doghouse” vents. The north one over Lisa’s bedroom has plenty of room. The southern one does not. The double roof rafters to support the southern side of this doghouse run right against the chimney. Because it has been jogged to the center of the house, it puts the doghouse right up in the roof valley. As a general practice, you don’t want water flowing toward a roof/wall seam and you don’t want to interfere with a roof valley water flow. Optically, it looks jammed together.
Jogging the the TV room flue to the south would solve all those problems and yielded slightly more floor space to the master bedroom.
This suggests (to me) the two story rear projection was added later in the blue print process. The glass block at the top of the stairs maybe does as well, as Brandon said. Also the two story part of the house has a basement room under all of it, except for the bump out in the back. I kinda feel like they weren’t bothering to re-engineer the house (foundations) for the new changes. A basement room under the bird room makes sense to me. If I were designing it, I would make this area a “root cellar” with access to the outside stairs by putting a door where the vent is that Brandon showed. This location could easily include a sink by its proximity to a bathroom.
So I think the architects started with a “standard” two story mansion blue print (the rectangle of the existing basement) and then made some custom changes.
Change one, music room. Right from the start.
Change two, add the two story bump out to the back, in the middle of the design phase.
Change three, add the service room kitchen extension and servant’s quarters and garage late in the actual building process. All of these “changes” have just an easy add crawl space beneath.
Another as built vs as designed item are the steps to the porch. As designed shows them starting right at the columns. As built has a one step down large stone area, and then the four steps to the driveway.

Elvis must've had the kitchen remodeled either at the time he bought Graceland in 1957 or shortly thereafter. The wall oven in the photo of Dee and Priscilla at 18:46 or so seems to be a 1950s Thermador model. I was just watching a video on Billy and Jo Smith’s channel, Elvis Fans Matter, and Billy answered the question about what’s behind the glass blocks behind the curtain going up the stairs!! 😳 It’s on a video titled “Viewers’ Questions Answered” starting at 33:15. Billy first makes a joke, then he says that behind the blocks is a door leading to the balcony above the jungle room.
I always thought it was the bathroom to Priscilla’s, Linda’s, and Ginger’s, little suit back there. What do you think of Billy’s answer? I’m really intrigued now. Please check it out!
