What Went Wrong With Sonic Origins

Sonic Origins is not enjoying a warm reception from the fan community. The removal of the "Michael Jackson" music in Sonic 3 upset some people, while glitches and bugs (such as the infamous Tails jump noise glitch) have bothered others.
We should point out that some people are having a great time with the game, it's a matter of personal taste how much the bugs bother any individual player.
One individual player who is certainly very bothered by the glitches is Simon Thomley, one of the developers who worked on the game. Alongside Christian Whitehead he created the widescreen mobile remakes of Sonics 1, 2, and CD, which are all included in this collection. Along with his team, Headcannon, he also helped create the Sonic 3 & Knuckles remake that is in the game.
Except, Simon Thomley says that the version of the game that his team delivered to SEGA is not quite the same as the version of the game that is in the finished Sonic Origins collection. Thomley blames bugs on a rushed development cycle, and while he's quick to insist that SEGA of America and Takashi Iizuka are not to blame, it does sound like management decisions from on high had an impact on the quality of the final collection.
Personally, we're inclined to believe Thomley, as it's difficult to find a more dedicated and passionate Sonic fan. Sadly, Thomley's had a difficult time since finishing Sonic Mania, and it's a shame to see him so frustrated with a game he clearly put so much work into.
The source for this video (Thomley's tweets) can be seen here: / hcstealth
If you'd like to play another Simon Thomley game (one that SEGA didn't rush out the door), consider trying out Pier Pressure on Steam: store.steampow...
Thank you all, and have a lovely day

Sadly Sega Corporate has already had such issues with THE SUITS as far back as the 90s, such as with console development and making US and Japan devs compete when it was better served to allow both end team up, etc.

As far as it effecting the Sonic Series itself, A Happy meal promotion was why Sonic 3 was split into two parts. Sonic 3 and Knuckles is almost the intended sonic 3 with the zone not necessarily being in the intended order. At bare minimum Flying battery zone was supposed to be between Carnival Night zone and Ice Cap Zone which is why enemies from that zone appear in Sonic 3's manual.

What went wrong with Sonic Origins?
    1. The debacle about the unnecessary pre-order chart making fans upset before release.
    2. Like most games nowadays it has bugs that will hinder the experience for players, some worse than others depending on your choice of hardware to play it on.
    3. [Not as severe but] The prototype music for latter half of Sonic 3 is clearly inferior to the original, lacking the same groovy feel they once had which was a major identity defining trait of the early Sonic franchise.
    And to me most importantly
    4. The game is overpriced because the additional content it adds isn’t worth it and their insecurities in the product they created show, that’s why they took down the original ports from digital stores, not to avoid confusion for consumers but to clearly advertise the newer, more expensive and less polished game. It doesn’t compare to any of the previous collections that gave you such a memorable experience along with the games like Gems and Mega Collection Plus.
This is all because of the publisher of the game, Sega. It’s not completely all on the developers.

Sonic Origins was rushed. It's missing the Sonic games for the Master System, Game Gear, 32X and the Saturn. And the new Super/Hyper tune sucks. Sonic Team, Christian Whitehead and Jun Senoue should have reused the prototype/PC version of the unused Super/Hyper tune for the Sonic 3 remake, but no, they screwed it up big time. Plus, the levels in Sonic 3 are not in the correct order. The correct level order in Sonic 3 is Angel Island, Hydrocity, Marble Garden, Carnival Night, Flying Battery (At night), Ice Cap, Launch Base, Mushroom Valley (Mushroom Hill's true name), Sandopolis, Lava Reef, Hidden Palace, Sky Sanctuary, Death Egg and Doomsday. Plus, Knuckles' theme tune is not the original prototype/PC version and Lava Reef, Part 1's background music was not remixed and to be used as background music for Lava Reef, Part 2. In other words, Lava Reef, Part 2's background music sounds nothing like Lava Reef, Part 1's background music. Lava Reef, Part 2's background music is the Hidden Palace background music played twice. For example, ever played the Genesis/Mega Drive version of Sonic 3D Blast (aka Sonic 3D: Flickies' Island)? In the Volcano Valley levels, there are two different versions of the Genesis/Mega Drive version of the Volcano Valley background music. For example, Volcano Valley, part 2's background music is a more softer remixed version of Volcano Valley, part 1's background music. My point being is, Lava Reef, part 1's background music should have been remixed and used as Lava Reef, part 2's background music instead of recycling the Hidden Palace background music. And one more thing: Super Sonic and Hyper Sonic's eyes are supposed to be black, not green.

My one and only complaint is the lack of remastered soundtracks for Sonic 1 and 2 in Sonic Origins, I hope that Sega gives us the option to switch between the original Genesis soundtracks and the remastered mobile soundtracks for Sonic 1 and 2, along with bug fixes and the option to play as Knuckles in Sonic CD, Sonic and Tails in Sonic 1, and Knuckles and Tails in Sonic 1 in a future update. Can you imagine being a executive at sega and being okay with pushing this out like this? This is their most treasured ip and relatively speaking there’s no way it cost thaat much in development, and even if it did, it’s your companies symbol and three 30 year old 2d games at 40 dollars. Then doing the whole edition split on top of knowing the issues that would pop up? It’s beyond greedy into stupid/inept. Greedy at least follows financial incentive, launching the collection like this just discourages people who would have from buying it. I’m sure the executives responsible are angry at the developer for “tattling” instead of blaming themselves for bad decisions.

There's multiple issues but just to name a few, there are several bugs throughout the games and the 3 music tracks in Sonic 3 (that had to be replaced due to legal reasons) were butchered and sound even worse than the old prototype versions they were originally gonna put in before Michael Jackson got involved. And the extra content in the collection's museum could have been a lot better, but they include mostly artwork you can already easily find online

The problem with sonic in the last decade is the company who own it, sega.
