being a former truck driver, doing the air brake test and routine inspection of your truck and trailer are key to preventing accidents like this.
    Tips:
    1. Drop down two or three gears before the down grade.
    2. Use the "jake" brake system, keeping it engaged for 20 seconds or so. Repeat every 30 seconds or so until you have fully descended the hill.
    3. Lay down the air horn if necessary to warn people to get out of your way.
    4. Test the brake system prior to going down the grade. If you see the PSI level drop below 60 psi, you need to set your hazards and inspect your braking system.
These tips are not all inclusive.
For motorists....if you see a 18-wheeler coming behind you quicker than normal, get out of the way. When a 18-wheeler loses control, it will tend to veer towards the left, or the outer part of a curve. In other words, get the H**L out of the way!

@@johnklar5131 Did you know that it is a rather common mechanical issue for a heavy truck to lose its brakes? All that has to go wrong is a engine oil gasket, a transmission oil gasket, a drive-axle gasket, a wheel seal gasket, a turbocharger gasket, a power steering pump gasket, or a fuel pump gasket to go out while the truck is moving to have a huge amount of oil or diesel fuel blowing rearward under the truck, coating the brake drums and the brake shoes. The driver tries to stop and has lost 99% or more of his braking efficiency. The same thing can happen in cars too.

This is driver failure on many levels not an equipment failure. He fried the brakes then failed to exit the road. If there was no run away truck ramp, 80k lbs will go right through those concrete barriers.

Must have happened on the Coak! 25 miles of non-stop 8% grades on both sides of it's extremely high 10,000 foot tall summit!!! They don't call hwy 5 thru the Coak the world's most dangerous stretch of expressway for no reason!

Don't even Volvos have spring brakes in N. America in this day and age? No air means brakes, no stopping means overused brakes. I have had 3 runaway with me in 50 years on the road, but all were in pre full air days. The scariest thing that can happen in a wagon. Oh and plaudits to the tow truck driver flat out in reverse, all on the mirrors, a real driver. ;-)

Neither, they use a lot of the time kitty litter, or a powder that is very absorbent, with either of those when they soak up the fuel they'll clump up and can be cleaned up quickly.

When I was out with my trainer 6 weeks he would not let me use the Jake brake going down the mountains I had to keep and sustain safe speed and learn to stabb brake and use proper gear yeah I learned real quick

    • @robakers5426
      @robakers5426 Před 5 lety

      Jerry Blanton
I think you have stab and snub braking confused.
Stab is putting your foot to the floor and braking as hard as as fast as possible.
Snub braking is what is used going down hills. You determine what your safe speed is based on the grade of the hill you're descending. You apply firm braking pressure to get the truck 8-10mph below your safe speed. Release the brakes and let the speed increase to your safe speed. Then reapply the brakes to get below your safe speed. Repeat until the hill is decended. Use in conjunction with the engine brake.
      Been down some nasty hills.
The sisters, cabbage, 17. Never had ANY heat issues with my brakes.
