That actually looks really delicious and tasty. I might try it them out sometime, really soon!

@@TheSpyFromTeamFortress2 It's an old SwankyBox series. He would say a sentence like that at the end of every video.

Looks like you ran into the floating point number imprecision issue. The position coordinates are so large that naturally gravity is not large enough to change their values, so Mario stays in roughly the same place. The camera jittering may be misleading.
I was just going to say that
Thats neat
mario moves down not far enough so his Y position rounds back to his current Y position
Yeah it's this. Swanky isn't up on his parallel universe floating point number lore. In fact based on this video I don't think he has any idea how floating point numbers work.

It’s just like in the Doctor Who episode “Face the Raven,” isn’t it? Cosmic Clones are analogous to Quantum Shades. Not even a TARDIS can outrun one; eventually, the Shade reaches its target the instant the timer hits 0. 👾
i know my comment means nothing, but thank you for still making mario galaxy content to this day. This game is my childhood, and honestly seeing these videos always brings back great memories.
It means something, obviously. He gave it a like, and you and your comments mean so much more than you think. Thank you for contributing by making comments.

Man idk why I love whenever swanky makes a cosmic clone video but I do thank you man you just made my day
So, you didn't escape the clones... but... I think you may have accidentally created a particle accelerator/particle collider, only it's linear instead of circular. It's kind of fascinating, really.
is each end a wormhole? is it a perpetual motion machine too?
@@dopesickdog no. It's limited (probably) to 10^308 units.
The idea that random chance determines when mario and the shadow clones collide is very similar to the quantum physics explanation as to why fusion can occur in stars despite not mathematically having enough pressure. The particles can randomly move, or “teleport” into other atoms, fusing them together without actually physically pushing them together.
a game where random chance determines if you get hit
high damage = high chance
low damage = low chance
What are the limits of the 3D Land version of the clones?
Yeah, good question
I believe the reason behind why when mario stops for even a brief moment he gets hit multiple times is that the active gravity is still attempting to pull at Mario. And after being hit by the first clone, your body is steadily being pulled in the opposite direction. As a result, the clones destination is on a position in front of you, so you end up moving towards each other at insane speeds.
This is probably why Mario's body contorts in the way it does as well. He has two separate forces, his own speed and gravity, moving him simultaneously in opposite directions. But the speed is greater than the gravitational force so it never evens out until you stop to look at him.
Ok, so half way through the vid, now that we know what you're trying to do. It sounds like you're trying to exploit a floating point number in the tracking of the clones. And that might work, but they might be able to quickly get back on course once you're position is near a number that is easy to represent with a floating point number.
I may be misremembering, but in the vanilla game (The Chompworks) there *were* some times where the clones later on the line got stuck via falling into the lava and still walking into whatever wall was blocking them.
Mario is masochist confirmed
2:26 That's odd, I don't remember Delfino Plaza Galaxy being in the game.

As someone who grew up with the Galaxy games, it always makes me happy when I see Swanky make a video about them
My goodness I always find funny random moments in Swankys content that makes him so enjoyable to watch like this moment here 6:00 just so random it makes me laugh so hard and so informative!
"There is a point where we needed to stop and we have clearly passed it... but let's keep going and see what happens" - Swanky, I imagine.
So I believe what you tried to do was go far enough out for your position data to be overloaded and so cut-off when set as the path data for the clones.
Instead, it seems both numbers have the same number of decimal points. Overloading your position puts you in 2 places at once, so the clones were also in 2 places at once, and you're able to be hit in *both* places. If one of those places is approx. where the other place was 2.5 seconds ago, then you'll be hit.
If Mario had infinite speed he would not be able to stop moving so they won’t catch him
Better yet: overloading the floating point values like that can completely crash the game! For example, if you set your speed fo infinite in Super Mario 64 (while standing still) and then jump in an underground level, the entire screen will go black and the game will cause a really bad crash. In fact, the crash is so bad that if you do it on the N64 console with the N64 hardware, or on the Wii U (for both you need hacks or glitches), you'll need to unplug the console, otherwise it won't shut down!
I love how you incidentally end up describing the pear wiggler meme while theorizing about what's happening
Hey Swanky! It's Titan29 from the Zardy's Maze community. Nephryte told me that you're making a video about the process of getting those last few unlisted videos, and I was the one who figured out the timestamps for the crossword section. I solved the puzzle exactly 420 days after the game came out, wrapping up just about everything. I just want to say that I really enjoy ZM, even if I am really bad at it, and between Neph working on the challenge side of things and me working on the puzzle side of things, I'm really looking forward to the next update! In the meantime, I just wanted to say thanks for the game, even if the community has gotten pretty strange over time, and I'm looking forward to new experiences with Zardy and friends ahead! Cheers! (Also out of bounds SMG2 is pretty jank)
did you find him?
I love your commentary so much, makes it super entertaining while also being fascinating
"This time we're going even farther! I want to see Mario shake into pieces as his remnants scatter into the stars!" - SwankyBox
how many years have I been watching this man outrun cosmic clones? too funny buddy nice to see you find a new way to do it every time
Fun analysis video! Thanks for uploading!
Wouldn't infinite speed mean Mario being omnipresent?
Wow, that ending got really deep all of a sudden
Quantum Mario looks like an electron; but here come the cosmic clones measuring his speed while you try and observe him.
I'm going to guess before watching the video the answer is "no".
Edit: I was right, but not in the way I expected
Correct
hmmmm "Is it possible to beat Super Mario Galaxy 2 if there are always cosmic clones following you" sounds like a fun challenge
6:14 Boss Magnus von Grapple music! YES!
I never thought I’d see Mario make a jump to hyperspace but there’s a first time for everything.
love your content keep up the good work
8:48 this is Literally quantum mechanics
This video is the best crossover I've ever seen.
Now I want a Green Demon stye challenge with the Cosmic Clones!
Surprise dark philosophy at the end.
Cosmic clones take you to dark places.
It’s a little simpler than that, they just coded them, same as Mario, but set it so there was a delay to the control input. Them set them as an enemy that would cause damage when interacted with.
Cosmic clone : Mario tried to avoid me using infinite speed and space alteration, how foolish...
Mario's own shadow : I know right ?
I was looking. At a video. Apparently they had a way to make it where you can do cosmic clone races
9:17 So you're telling me you made a quantum mechanism inside of the game where every frame processing works as the observer collapsing each frame into one of the two states in the superposition of Mario being hit and not hit
quantum mechanics being creepily similar to floating point errors would fit simulation theory...
Awesome video!
Cosmic clones would be a really cool antagonist of an anime or something. I'd love to see how the protagonist would defeat them
Stand still for 2 seconds, then shoot/stab/whatever where you just were. Rinse, repeat.
just walk backwards while shooting the clone
NO
@@blaze4109 Here's the problem. They're poisonous to touch. That's why Mario takes damage!
@@nicholasdaisyawesomeness1291 if they are poisonous then why do cosmic clones keep running towards mario? thats kinda mean.

This was strangely epic.
*You see:* these are the *REAL* questions that everyone needs to be asking!
Thank you, SwankyBox - for giving us all the answers we _desperately_ needed... nay, the answers we _deserve!_ 🙂
Your average speedrunner: ah yes, what you call fast is what we call slow.
I wasn’t expecting to watch a video where Mario is turned into an electron
This man went from making a mod about his game to see what Mario clones do
Judging from a programming standpoint, I do believe the 50 clone limit is the strict limit of how many Mario actions are recorded into some sort of memory, thus when the 51st clone is created, it tries to access an action outside of the memory, causing an out of bounds error.
i did a similar experiment but i ran from the clones for 17 hours and the thing that stopped my expiriment was the point of hitting the shadow realm itself in distance where the console went on fire
and almost blew up
If a game lets me do it, testing a games floating point is my favorite thing to do.
U can't escape by going faster... BUT CAN U ESCAPE BY GOING SLOWER?
no
I don't know why but I'm genuinely mad that super mario galaxy 2 has a better fucking quantum tunneling example than any college physics professor has ever taught
Thank you for the video.
You know something I want to see? With all the modding and such you can do, can you make a horror level out of the assets in Galaxy or Sunshine?
4:00 TFW you beat the the whole game of Super Mario Galaxy 2 after getting every single Power Star and 9,999 Starbits, then you have a Mario Party
At the start of the movie i expected the result because with large numbers the accuracy of least significant numbers is dropped resulting in the same number in memory eventually
9:37 My theory for here is actually pretty simple. The reason they don't hit Mario immediately after he takes damage and falls is because immediately after taking damage, Mario has a couple seconds of Invincibility Frames where he can't take damage. This is so the player isn't killed immediately if they get swarmed by goombas or kameks or in this case, cosmic clones
Is there a way to measure Mario's speed after 17 minutes?
Mario Mario and the RAIDERS OF THE LOST ARK face melting begins
I’m using this before I watch, and I don’t plant on editing it afterwards, but I feel like since the Cosmic Clones are basically just ghosts, then they would do the same as you.
I like that one of the the clones in the thumbnail look mad
Wow that was cool
I didn't know where to ask this, but I was watching Gray Fruit play this game and while he was fighting King Kaliente is dawned on me that King Kaliente always turns to face you when you're in his fight. You can still walk under the plantet which puts him out of the players view, but it made me think about what happens in that situation. Does he look down at you under the planet and awkwardly turn while looking down?
It would be pretty neat if SwankyBox made a new Pixel Portals video since I comment about it in every video.
Cosmic Clone be all like: "ThE oNlY tHiNg FaStEr ThAn ThE sPeEd Of LiGhT iS tHe SpEeD oF dArK"
no the speed of dark is 0
Mario's terrified eyes as he attempts to turn into a skin parachute, though. Lol.
Is it possible to take a closer look at Comet Observatory in the cutscene, in which Mario is launched towards the planet he's going to, just before the star select?
you make life worth living.
6:01 why is this so funny? XD
Cosmic Clones are the best!
I think the reason Mario gets hit so quickly is because the clones fallowing Mario's directional speed data and any speed hacks applied to the clones as a side effect, one that has one small flaw, it doesn't change the speed until the previous ones 2.5 seconds are up, and if a clone overshoots the expected position from the data, it's warped to Mario's x,y coordinates yet it's z coordinate stays the same and it's new directional speed is towards Mario yet still at its previous speed until the 2.5 second window between the clone actions is completed.
it's probably something to do with interpolation of hitboxes in my game i use capsules for that so it might be making a capsule from the current position to the position + velocity thus making tons of cosmic clones able to hit you if you stop maybe (there might be some flaws with this thought) and also imperfect floats would probably work in tandem with the capsules to do that too mario galaxy is probably similar on the capsule thing since every hitbox is a sphere for entities
You should leave this on overnight, endlessly going faster and faster... It would be so overloaded it would probably crash, bit if it didnt it might work.
I’m trying Hello Fresh, boys. Gonna see how worth it this thing really is.
is it worth it
@@CheddarCheeseRebirthed gotta wait no?

So speaking about this cosmic clone stuff, there is a cool mod for gmod that give you a trail of cosmic clones! Well it mimics literally every move, I change my player model, it changes.
do you have a link to it?

What if you found a way to trap the cosmic clones while it's mimicking Mario's movement? Like maybe some box falls on top of the cosmic clones (but not Mario) and interrupting the movement
Cosmic clones pass through obstacles and can walk on platforms that are no longer there.
