- The Great Smoky Mountains Railroad operates out of Bryson City, NC over the former Southern Railway Murphy Branch. Since 1988, scenic excursions have been operated along the Tuckasegee River and into the Nantahala Gorge.
For the 2020 fall season, an impressive 25-car train was operated from Bryson City to the Nantahala Gorge. These trips were led by their former U.S. Army 2-8-0 1702, which was rebuilt to service in 2016. GP9s 1751 and 1755 would assist and return.

Glad you enjoyed
@@DynamoProductions-trainsoy Dynamo, What does 1702 have to do with his name Written on the side of his cab?
@user-we9wz2xd4r because it’s one of GSMR’s locations.
I love this railroad. I also love that southern whistle.
Same
Indeed.
Great place to visit, we were glad to go in 2020
Well, I know 1702, Wait-… did he run in the Nantahala gorge?
I rode this during Christmas in middle school. That's one of the coolest experiences.
how does it fee riding a train? too much movement? I want to do it, but I SUFFER from anxiety so idk if I'm going to be able to do this
It’s more comfortable than riding a car
I like seeing GMSR 1702 running excursion trains. I love hearing the New southern railway 3 chime whistle!
Glad you enjoyed
Aight, 1702 is one of my most favorite engines! His Whistle feels like a miracle when I went to Smoky mountains, and also my grandma! Thank 1702!
Yeah… it had been a long time before he was restored with sissy engine 1705.
Incredible job, guys! Very well done!
Thanks
Yes, both locations are shown in the video
@@DynamoProductions-trains I’ve been waiting for 1702 run again in CZcams
@@DynamoProductions-trainswell, My grandma passed away in 2022, According To 1702’s Streamline, He made one of my grandfathers, who live in Nepal and my grandma, Well, They call 1702’s name, Bryson city streamliner, well, im proud that 1702 is back on his spiritual self! I declare 1702 the Steam king of Smoky mountains!
Wait-… I FORGOT MY OTHER WORDS
Wow so cool I want to go there 😊❤
I love the Railroad and it's been here since I was growing up back in my childhood
It's a great place, we were glad 2020 gave us an excuse to check it out
@@DynamoProductions-trains 28:09 Goodnight 1702!
This is a very good video!
Thanks
Nice steam locomotive!👍i give a like
Glad you enjoyed
Awesome video!
Thanks
Surprised that 1702 managed to handle the long train consist even with the help of the diesels. Also great whistle.
Never underestimate the power of a steam locomotive
@@johnathanhardin152 Well you should also realize not all steamers can handle that many cars with assistance or not. 734 had that problem for many years before being pulled in 2016
I don't think so. She doesn't need help I for one don't like the idea of a diesel helping a steam locomotive.
@@Thomasboi01 its the least they can do with power for the cars and dynamic braking.
Does it matter? I mean who cares about that?
I want to do this.... the beautiful Smoky Mountains 🍁🍂🌿🍀🌻🌷🌡️🏞️🌄☀️🏔️🌲🌳
Go for it
Very nice done video :)
Thanks
Sounds like it has a pennsy whistle this time around
Shop-built Southern Railway Steptop 3 Chime
Nice
Thanks
A true veteran
Beautiful video! Thanks for sharing! Do you remember the general date you took the train? I’m planning to take my husband for his birthday and hope to catch some fall foliage. Just trying to plan the best time for that 😊
This was October 2020. That’s their busy season then, running steam twice a day, six days a week.
I was disappointed to see the diesels on the end but still a great looking train.
The train was 25 cars long and there’s no runaround, the diesels are necessary
Would be nice if they could make it a round trip ride, would love to experience that.
It is a round trip
@@DynamoProductions-trains i mean not get to a certain point and go backward
Kind of hard to find a route that’s a circle
So the trip backwards can you turn your seat to see going forward? Wife gett motion sickness
All seats can be reversed
Jesus wept! 25 cars?! On a tourist railroad?! And none of them were empty either! No wonder they needed the extra pair of diesels on the back. I imagine all three locos were doing their fair share of the work. It's also interesting that this really was kind of a train to nowhere; it just rolled up to a spot deep in the woods... and then went back, just like that.
The train went through the Nantahala Gorge, then backed up to the Outdoor Center.
400 LIKE no super film
Did you know that 1702 used to be a US army engine?
Yes, we mention that in the description
