- Time-lapse close up of Monarch caterpillar pupating and later the butterfly braking out of its chrysalis. Notice how the wings expand as the belly fluids are pumped into them. Save a Monarch, grow a Milkweed!
I love how when they come out of the chrysalis their "tail" still looks like a caterpillar then slowly thins out. Absolutely beautiful.

Thanks, Rex. The transformations happened while I was either sleeping or away at work. My camera shot via remote control 24/7 to capture those precious moments. Technology is an amazing thing!

@phresh07 it doesn't alter it's DNA. from the egg to the butterfly it is the same organism with the same DNA, it just changes it's physical structure.

@mzyAngel01 No, Monarch butterflies migrate 3000 miles to Mexico every year and then return in the spring to lay eggs. Look up Migrating Monarchs

I understand what metamorphis' is, I just don't understand how it's possible; I mean, no other animal/vegetation does this, so it would probably make more sense to me if I can watch it GENETICALLY change from the inside out, instead of just watching it from the outside.

I'm no pro at this but here it goes: No it's not altering it's DNA but it is altering what parts of it's DNA are being expressed those other parts never go away and nothing is added just different parts are being used. These changes in DNA expression are thought to be started by body size of the larvae that triggers a hormone change. To be continued.
