- Monarch butterfly emerging time lapse. Danaus plexippus.
Filmed by Neil Bromhall
The metamorphosis stage takes 8-12 days
The process of a butterfly emerging from its chrysalis is called Eclosion.
The wings expand and inflate by pumping Meconium through the venation structures
It can take 30 mins to 2 hours for the wings to dry.
When the wings have dried the butterfly is able to fly.
All my butterflies emerged very early in the morning before sunrise.
Maybe this is a strategy to avoid predation whilst the wings are soft and the butterfly is unable to fly away.
