- There are 3 kinds of restores: one-off restores to fix an emergency, testing your backups, and recurring, scheduled restores (like refreshing a dev server.) In this module, I'm going to focus on the most common one by far, the first one. I'll talk about the gotchas of what happens when you need to restore a few rows or a table, a single database, multiple databases, system databases, or the entire server.

Many thanks for the videos Brent.
When I heard you talk about not restoring on top of existing DB (and then renaming it), I'm reminded once again how easy that stuff is with Sql Server.
Not too long ago a colleague said 'can you rename the existing DB?' it was during naming convention change, so I asked Google how to rename MySql database.
I could not find an easy way. FOR A BASIC OPERATION. You have to go to the server machine to manually rename files, directories, etc.
That's why I (being mostly a backend developer) consider Sql Server one of the most stable RDBMS in terms of operations. Having used Postgres and MySql, and they have problems in situations where SS just quetly does its job
Amazing, thanks!!!
this is just fundamentals and for me, DBA sounds like the guy controlling the power plant on the Chernobyl HBO series
Gracias por tu tiempo
Thanks for eu classes.
It's my pleasure!
Thanks brent
You're welcome!
Hey Brent. Is there a particular template you use when making users sign off that the restore is ok to replace the production db?
great question, but no.
Are you a fan of the band Talking Heads by chance? If not you should watch "Once in a Lifetime" video. In it David Byrne makes a similar hand motion around 1:2X in the official video version here on CZcams as you make around 14:15. It's probably just a coincidence but it caught my attention.
I am indeed, and not a coincidence, hahaha. ;-)
So, how you restore an object or a table from a backup ?
Unfortunately, SQL Server doesn't have that capability.
"I can't read!" 🤣🤣🤣
Heh heh heh
