The Ateneo Law School community mourns the passing of its Dean Emeritus, Fr. Joaquin G. Bernas, S.J. in the early morning of March 6, 2021.
We take solace in the knowledge that his was an earthly life filled with meaning and purpose. An earthly life dedicated to service, to standards of excellence, to the greater glory of God.
Indeed, a man, an excellent man, for others.
Fr. Bernas graduated from the Ateneo Law School in 1962 and served as its dean twice in 1974-1976 and in 2000-2004. He also served as President of the Ateneo de Manila University in 1984-1993. He is a highly-esteemed constitutionalist, member of the 1986 Constitutional Commission, and a widely-recognized authority in Constitutional Law and Public International Law.
He mentored and touched the lives of many generations of Atenean lawyers. He has contributed immeasurably to keeping the Ateneo Law School true to its identity and calling.
Fr. Bernas, who continues to inspire and influence generations of ALS graduates, was inducted to the Hall of Fame of ALS Professors during the 67th ALS Commencement Exercises on April 26, 2015. This video was presented in his honor during his induction.
The Ateneo Law School’s debt of gratitude to Fr. Bernas can never truly be fully repaid.
May he rest in God’s unceasing care.
