- Ascendant Studios' Immortals of Aveum is now available for Xbox Series X/S, PS5 and PC. It has some high-level Hollywood talent involved and boasts sharp visuals courtesy of Unreal Engine 5.1. However, this magic-based first-person shooter hasn't made much of an impact (and it's not because of Gamescom).
When you look past the shiny veneer, the tale of Jak and the Order of the Immortals as they battle the overwhelming forces falls somewhat flat. Some of this is due to the dialogue, but the awkward combat and lackluster control options also hurt it.
With five years of development, triple-A pricing and significant hype, you have to wonder: What happened? Why is Immortals of Aveum average at best and comfortably mediocre at worst? Let's take a closer look. - Hry

Could it be that it's such a bland-looking product with such a generic, run of the mill world that people genuinely forgot about it until it came out? I believe people when it comes to its gameplay quality, it looks fun, but everything else about it is just so artificial and looks so much like products like Forspoken or other modern fantasy games. I loathe the art direction of the enemies in this, it's more general, non-detailed fantasy schlock that aims to look modern for some reason, falling for the same tropes like a billion glowing particles everywhere. All enemies look like Destiny 2 / Horizon, always-metal-helmet-on npcs with random glowing basic shapes for crying out loud.
It doesn't have an identity of its own and that's why I don't remember anyone ever knowing it existed prior to its release. Half the visuals are small and big metal men with primary color square tattoos man, the entire thing is so boring and it's been done to death, going back to even God of War.

I'm 16 hours into the game, and it doesn't come close to being a "disaster". This game has been a diamond in the rough for me, and pays homage to Metroid Prime games but with magical weapons. Playing on the PC version and get a steady 70-90FPS on 4K at high settings. It has its rough moments with the storytelling and some dialogue, but overall, it's worthy of being considered a AAA title. Being the first UE5 game for my rig, it certainly is equivalent to when I first ran Crysis on my PC way back when.

Lol something isn't "considered AAA" because it has decent graphics or frame rate, or how well it runs overall. How rough a game's dialogue is also has nothing to do with whether it's AAA or not. The only thing that defines AAA is budget when making it, and additionally often that it's produced by a large publisher. It has nothing at all to do with subjective quality or enjoyment.

@mydogeatspuke you are right but this game would be considered a AAA game from it's budget alone. A staggering 125 million. Which must hurt when there sales are around 80+million from what I read. I imagine they recoup some from Playstation plus and gamepass(when it releases on it that is).

I can understand as a consumer wanting to spend your money on a product that has high ratings but a 7/10 is not a bad game at all

Yah the scoring system is completely broken. A game is only considered buyable if it’s an 8 or higher. We might as well just have a 4 number scoring system. 7 being trash, 8 being ok, 9 being great, and 10 being masterpiece. That’s how players and the industry already view it. How many groans of disappointment do we hear for every release that ‘only’ gets a 7? That should be well above average. But apparantly it’s ‘unplayable garbage’ and ‘a disaster’. Lol.
Looked like any other fps but with flashy lights from the trailers so think most people would wait for a sale on this one
i've been playing this game for a few weeks on ps5 and i'm enjoying it. maybe it's the patches or i just wanted something fun to play. the story is fine. maybe a bit overwritten but doesn't ruin anything. the gameplay is fun. the different powers and upgrades you can get keep things interesting.
i really hope this studio sticks around. they are some talented folks working there.

The game is very well-produced - it just feels like it was made without fully understanding its audience. It looks and sounds like like a Marvel TV show you can play. For some that’s great but many people are sick of the Marvel formula and its style of humor. It doesn’t help that the game is relatively short, is a bit generic lore-wise, and doesn’t have Multiplayer.
You hit the nail in the head, the story is meh at best. Generic fantasy stuff not done particularly well and the dialogue is outright atrocious. Cringe inducing in fact, the fact there is no save system and you can't skip cutscenes makes it even worse, more so if you decide to restart a chapter because it will take you back to the very start of it and make you watch them all again. I would honestly say it's worse than Marvel, every joke falls flat, the world is almost conquered but everyone is throwing bad quips around and nearly every character is outright unlikeable. I recently bought the game but the longer I have played the more these things are just outright spoiling the game and it's a shame because it really had potential to be something very good and instead we got a fairly mediocre game.
It's nothing like marvel. It actually takes at least half a brain to enjoy.
@stevemac6707 The game saves all the time. There's plenty of ways to force it to save. The story fleshes out as the chapters progress. Sounds like you weren't able to beat it because you're bad, so you're essentially judging a painting based off of one corner. Even more obvious because you talk about failing entire chapters? Maybe video games aren't for you. Those child marvel movies might be more your skill set. They also have a simpler x-to-y story that is easier for a brain like yours to follow.

A solid "7" should be sold will a solid 7 price, around 30-40. When you put your price equal to other great game, which are 9, 10, your products are expected to be that good, if it isn't then don't, have some self esteem...
I’ve been enjoying this game. One of my favorite games of the year. Not all games have to be perfect AAA blockbuster hits. It is fun to play. I think that is enough sometimes. Especially with a new IP.
Give it a few years and it'll be consider underrated. Everyone says we need more mid tier games instead of block buster games all the time and here we have one and people still complain lol

I think if you go into the game with middle of the road expectations, you won't be disappointed. I think it's an alright experience. It just has been such a huge year for games that a AA game seems like a junker.

@@icewolf6062 Most aren't, they are typically priced $10-$20 less than AAA. I've paid $70 for disappointing games that weren't worth $10, and $20 for amazing games that were worth far more. Besides, if a game isn't worth paying full price at launch, wait for a sale and it's at price point your comfortable with paying.
I think that's the real issue. If it released like, 4 months ago or 4 months from now? It'd be seen as pretty good. But as it is: We've been eating Wagyu Steak for the last couple months, so a nice normal steak doesn't taste as good.
I do feel the price is high for a AA game. And it should have been a 40 dollar game, so definitely a wait for sale type. And I do agree that we have been getting wagyu, and now we have a sirloin but every cut of steak (game) has its place and time.
Seems to me like they should've lowered the scope/budget. A new company no one has heard of creating a new IP and selling it for $80 is an extremely risky move, during a year where several massive AAA titles are coming out. No one's going to care about a random $80 game in this current economy if its overshadowed by BG3/Starfield.

This game looks like how it feels to chew Skittles flavored 5 gum.
The game looks ok to me but I'm in no rush to play it. Might pick it up on sale in a few months. Still playing a lot of Remnant 2, that game was only $50 on release and definitely worth it. Very fun solo and up to 3 player co-op. Around 170 hours played so far.
Hey, just change the DLSSG dLL from 3.1 to 1.07 version and the artifacts and ghosting are gone and for performance improvements just force enable resize bar with nvidia profile inspector
The game looks great. Just released at a horrible time. People are playing BG3 and patiently waiting for starfield to come out. 2 of the biggest games of the year.
It’s funny. I beat it, and yea I agree at first glance it looks amazing, no pop in, amazing partial effects and colors. But once you actually start paying attention it looks pretty rough at times. There are alottt of low poly textures, the framerate is rough at times. And the 720P internal resolution really is a bad choice, any time your moving around the FSR makes everything look so low resolution and fuzzy. So yes it can be a looker, but it’s not nearly as visually polished as it should be

I just finished this game and honestly this game was great! Definitely deserves a sequel to it. It was not a “Disaster” or “Forgettable” in any sense. Just play the game and enjoy and stop being so damn critical. I embrace the story and got really in it and love it!
I just had uninstall and install the game they not letting me jump back into my save progress…it’s says it’s updating then stops…on my Xbox series x
I've only just started playing the game as everyone was saying it's trash. It's not. It's actually very very good. The characters, world and lore building are great. I'm surprisingly sucked into the game and I'm thoroughly enjoying the action packed gameplay.

I actually understand the rep and attention it's getting and it's because it genuinely is a decent game that people enjoy. Just being a cool game nowadays is enough for people to pay attention, since we're so starved of quality.
But yeah, I absolutely agree it looks extremely mass-produced and like a billion things I've seen before on top of having your average modern gaming cringe dialogue.

What's the point of using UE5 if graphics looks average by today's standards but performance is extremely bad even on a high-end GPUs? Almost all of the UE5 games that came out before are like this. Wasn't this engine supposed to bring revolution in graphics?
I'm playing this game on ps5 and I've had 1 bug threw the game and Im enjoying it!
i will be completely honest as an average gamer, the first thing that got me was the system requirements for this game are wild and in my experience for whatever reason i found the game was constantly crashing even on the lowest of settings and i am running a 4060 rtx, i mean that's insane which to be honest could be due to the fact that i am not running my games on an SSD but the old school drives but still i have 16 gg's of ram, i should be fine, i don't know but i think it had an insane amount of potential to be great but needing a 4090 to play it on medium probably didn't help their cause.
I've seen the game from start to finish and personally for me It was great especially with how the magic works. What I did wish they do for the game was after you Finish it you could play as Luna (either with her own story or you can play through most of the game but with some changes to her moveset).

Hi. This is one of the most expensive games I have bought, I defeated the game in 37.7 hours with default weapons, and enemies like 5 per round until the last boss which was already defeated early in the game. Do I recommend this s..t nah

I’ve been really enjoying the game. I’ve had 3 full days of solid gameplay, and if you are taking the time to engage with all the puzzles and actually enjoy everything there is on offer, it’s a good experience. The gameplay is phenomenal and I would love to see more systems like these put into a first person shooter.
I’m playing on PS5 and start to finish have only experienced one game crash, and maybe a small handful of frame rate drops.
Overall I’ve been very happy with my experience and would advise people to give it a shot. It’s definitely worth waiting for a sale because it might be on the shorter side, especially if you bypass all the puzzles, but even paying full price I’m satisfied with the experience.
I am playing it now and enjoying the hell of it. I am hopeful for either dlc or even better a immortals 2

So I had never even heard of the game until seeing it free on PSN, and figured I’d check it out… ya know what it reminds me of? Jedi Fallen Order! It’s like practically the same game just sub magic lasers for light sabres… I am actually blown away by this game! I had extremely low expectations just cause it was free and most free PSN games are terrible… so I had planned on deleting it after tutorial if it didn’t catch me… but I gave it a chance and boy am I happy I did! Just beat it earlier tonight and man does it have some cool and epic cinematics!!! I didn’t really care for the “funny jokes” but fair enough… the combat is so good and rewarding it totally makes up for a lame quip here and there. And the audio/music is insane!
I also really love how every time you leave a place and come back, there are different enemies, different loot/chests that spawn etc. So it’s not like “oh damn I have to go through an area I already cleared before(boring)… you’ll come back to an area you have already been and surprise, now there’s a bossfight with some legendary loot because you revisited the area! Really well thought out there!
Performance wise the only problems I encountered was the game crashed twice when I was in the fast travel menu and was skipping around between portals to figure out which I wanted to take. Almost like it starts pre-loading the region you’re hovering on before you actually click it, so it gets overwhelmed when you click around too fast or something.
I know Jedi fallen order was another free PsN game that blew me away, but to anybody reading who is on the fence for this game, definitely go for it! And if you’re a dark souls type, there are a lot of “lore” documents you can pick up and read in addition to the main storytelling.

Video game review outlets like this are eventually the ones who end up catapulting these "mixed to positive" games into cult status. I wouldnt oay $70 for this but it looks like a fun bargain buy. Think about it, IGN gave Alien Isolation a 5 also. Now look at it.

This game was good for 10-12 hours. Then after completing it there is no replayability. You can’t start the game over with your skills and weapons (maybe on a harder difficulty). It leaves you with a objective “tie up loose ends”, with no instruction in where to find these loose ends. It was awesome for 10-12 hours, but when the story ends the game is over.
So I just finished the game and I'm about to go onto ng plus and rn I think the game is like a solid 8 for me personally I had very little performance issues and only a few lil hiccups here n there but overall it ran really well and I could follow the story pretty easily
Reason i didn't buy this game is 1. Ea didn't lift review embargos early. Led me to cancel my pre-order as the only reason they would do that is because they didnt have faith in the game. It's not a 100% certainty that when a dev does this, it means the game will be bad. But it doesn't help with confidence or exposure pre game release.
2. Lack of replayability and game modes. To me the golden era of games was the golden era because they actually felt like games that were made to have FUN not just be a really really good campaign. But modes that you could fuck around with to take a break from the game have fun, and play the game in a different and exhilarating way, maybe even with friends. Sure i love good campaigns and from what i hear this games lands well. But for 69.99 pounds, there is no way im buying if all i get is a campaign, especially if it's a new IP.
Personally if it had a horde mode, or just some other game mode that had separate progression it would of been a instant buy from me. I get that games are getting harder to make due to the narrative and graphical side. But those aspects have zero impact on the gameplay; and hence these products are called GAMES, that to me personally should be put first.
Tbh I just finished it and give it a 10/10. Haven’t enjoyed a game like that for a while. It’s what games you use to be. Before you would have to put 100 hours in to get a quarter of the quests done. I HIGHLY recommend this game to everyone!

Really only heard about this game about 2-3 weeks ago, but never payed any attention to it. Looking at this vid here, just comes off as an FPS with magic. That's just me, i dont remember the last time I played a FPS.
People forgot what gaming industry have become but this is kind of a throw back to the age when gaming is still entertainment but not a huge mass of greed

my gpu is a 12gb 6750xt on an am5 setup with a 144 hz 1440p monitor & it I'm about 5 hours into it & my average frame rate is 140 on quality settings... The game runs very well for me but It did do 1 hiccup... so far
when I completed a task when I started to do it omg blacksod! AAAAA!! & I had to shut that window down with the task manager... surprised me because I built this about 1 1/2 yrs ago now & that has never happened in a game to me on this unit b4... well ummm or since

It's the pricing and release window. People are currently a bit more cautious with their money. Then there is BG3, AC6 and Starfield is also around the corner. The competition is just too strong.

I know this video was made before Starfield came out and hindsight is 20/20. This game is much more enjoyable than Starfield is. It's a fun throw-back to late 90s / early 2000s linear story-based shooters along with modern crafting mechanics and cut scenes. It's not perfect, but it is a breath of fresh air once you get your settings dialed in. Is this a $70 game? No. Is it a great $30 game? YES!
For anyone watching this who's debating on playing this game or not, PLAY IT!!! I started it this week and this game has the quality of a AAA game. The graphics (on PS5) are stunning, the voice acting is great, gameplay itself is VERY satisfying and the game mixes a lot of elements that anyone into action/adventure/fps games will enjoy. Personally I absolutely recommend it.
When I saw the trailer to this game it didn’t really grab me, but I bought it on a whim anyway… really glad I did. I’ve been loving this game. I like the combat, the graphics, I love the exploring. To me it’s just a really fun game.
I think your a tad wrong. I love the game. I've spent a TON of money of games in the last 12 months and I got this for 27.99 a few days ago and it's by far my favorite. I like it more than any game that's come out in quite some time. It's taken its place as Mt 3 favorite game ever. Tied with gta San andreas

Click bait title. This is hardly a bad game! For a new IP I think it’s great opening entry, hope to see more.
Its a good game, but nowadays the market is flooded with games, qnd usually people concentrate on great games and above and leqve the good ones alone.
I did not see this game as a "Disaster".
This game uses lumen lighting. That means that the shadows of this game looks amazing, but unless you have a GPU that has RT cores then you can expect poor performance. Lumen is impressive technology and save a ton of time lighting a game, and it will be the future of lighting, but currently I think that most hardware is not ready for a world to be lit my lumen. Overall I would not say that this is a poorly optimized game, but more so a game that uses technology too ahead of its time. Kind of like Crysis.

Nothing went wrong with this game. The dialogue isn't the best, but this is really not that bad. It's not going to win game of the year, nor is it something that can merit worship, but it is a pretty decent weekend fair. Just wait for a sale.

Tried the PC demo and the performance was so bad it made me nauseated.
It’s a Good Ass Game! It’s waaaay better than Forspoken, Imo! I just finished it 2 days ago. The combat is engaging & fun asf.

the PC specs are rather high as well which is why I didn't get it. I may havebeen tempted if I had a better RTX card than the 2070 but i trequires a 2080 minimum

bad marketing, this was setup to fail. I hadn't heard about this up until yesterday.
The big plus for me was the lack of multiplayer. Now days too many games focus on multiplayer and nothing else. I really have no desire to play online with a bunch prepubescent kids.
