Piece of Mind is my personal favorite Maiden album but I cannot argue that the other two are on the list. When I was maybe 10 years old (I’m 55) my older brother bought two albums for my birthday. One was a Yes album (can’t remember which one) and Black Sabbath “Black Sabbath”. I wouldn't cancel a band over one member being a douche, especially a band that broke up over 20 years ago (seriously, it's kind of pointless to get mad about it now; yeah, they loved their Confederate flags, but I doubt they would still be waving those if they were still around today).

I saw them open for Priest on that tour and I saw them heading the Spectrum in Philadelphia on the World Slavery tour. If you were there you know! This was the peak of their powers and they set the bar high! The first two Sabbath albums were released in the same year so I'd vote them both in one slot on my top ten essential Metal albums. I'm going to take issue with the selection of British Steel. Unleashed in the East is the more essential Metal Priest album to me. Number of the Beast too? Absolutely! Master of Puppets for the win over Megadeth? ABSOLUTELY! I'd replace the other four of the Bard's selections.

10: No arguments about Ride the Lightning.
9: Honestly, Powerslave is possibly my favorite Iron Maiden album (that or Seventh Son of a Seventh Son) so I'm not upset about that one, though I hear way more people list Piece of Mind these days so I was expecting that one to show up instead.
8: Nothing against Paranoid, as it's a classic, although as hot as this take is, Paranoid isn't even in my Top 5 Black Sabbath Albums (though I've also heard Paranoid a few too many times so maybe I'm letting that cloud my judgement).
7: No complaints about Vulgar Display of Power.
6: Bard made the right choice, although you could make an argument for Countdown to Extinction or Peace Sells...But Who's Buying?. I'm probably the one guy who'd put Cryptic Writings as his favorite Megadeth album, lol.
5: Nothing wrong with British Steel as it's a classic, but I personally disagree. I would argue more for Sad Wings of Destiny, Stained Class, Screaming for Vengeance, or Painkiller, but Bard didn't choose Demolition, so he gets a passing grade for this one.
4: No complaints about Reign in Blood.
3: I'm pretty sure Bard just got lazy and copied the description he did for Powerslave, but no argument with the actual pick.
2: Good choice, no complaints. Even if my favorite Metallica album is ...And Justice for All, I can understand favoring Ride the Lightning and Master of Puppets for this list.
1: I don't know if I agree with number 1 of all time but it's certainly the most innovative. I don't know how hot this take is, but as far as albums that are 100% metal start to finish, I would argue more in favor of Master of Reality.

I asked chat gpt the best metal albums ever and this is what I got:
    1. Black sabbath-paranoid (1970):often considered one of the pioneering albums of heavy metal, Paranoid introduced the world to the dark, heavy riffs and lyrical themes that would come to define the genre
    2. Metallica-master of puppets(1986):widely regarded as one of the greatest metal albums of all time, master of puppets showcases Metallica's virtuosity, songwriting prowess and ability to blend thrash aggression with intricate melodies
    3. Iron maiden-the number of the beast(1982):this album marked Iron maiden's breakthrough, featuring iconic tracks like Run to the hills and the title track which solidified the band's status as metal legends
    4. Slayer-reign in blood (1986): clocking in at just under 30 minutes, reign in blood is a relentless assault of speed and aggression, influencing thrash and extreme metal bands with its ferocity and intensity
    5. Judas priest-british steel(1980): with anthems like breaking the law and living after midnight, British steel is a quintessential metal album that helped define the sound and image of heavy metal in the early 1980s
    6. Pantera-vulgar display of power(1992): renowned for its raw power and aggression, vulgar display of power is a landmark album in groove metal, showcasing pantera's tight musicianship* and vocalist Phil anselmo's commanding presence
    7. Black sabbath-black sabbath (1970): black sabbath's self titled debut laid the groundwork for the entire genre of heavy metal with its dark, ominous atmosphere and heavy downtuned riffs
    8. Megadeth-rust in peace (1990): featuring complex song structures and virtuosic guitar work from Dave Mustaine and Marty Friedman Rust in peace is a thrash masterpiece that remains a benchmark for technical proficiency in metal
    9. Opeth-blackwater park (2001): a landmark in progressive death metal, Blackwater park showcases opeth's ability to seamlessly blend brutal aggression and haunting melodies and intricate songwriting
    10. Tool-lateralus (2001): while not strictly a metal album, lateralus incorporates heavy, progressive elements and is revered for its complex rythms, thought provoking lyrics, and atmospheric soundscapes, earning it a place among metal's greatest albums

Yeah, a lot of Pantera fans lately try to argue Vulgar is overrated. No, no it's not. I think it is rated correctly. Personally, if I HAD to list a a Pantera album as overrated, it would be Far Beyond Driven. Do not misunderstand me, it is still a great album, but so many people say it is their absolute pinnacle, even though I actually think there are a couple of weaker tracks here (and Good Friends is edgelord cringe, to me personally). Trendkill may be their most underrated album.

The difference between the best 10 metal albums and the worst 10 metal albums is that on the best list, you can assume that since only 10 made the list, the 11th was [insert your favorite metal album here] and get on with your day.
On the worst list, it is a much more direct call-out -and of failure. If Bardy was really being honest, the worst 10 metal albums of all time would have just been 10 St. Anger 10 times and there would have been few to disagree.

If I were gonna pick two Maiden albums I would’ve picked Brave New World and Iron Maiden (because “Phantom of the Opera”). I would’ve loved to see Bard pick Judas Priest’s Defenders of the Faith…side A. Though if that’s too specific then Painkiller it is. Picking between Ride, Puppets and Justice depends on what day of the week it is since they’re all masterpieces. Also when it comes to Megadeth my favorite album is So Far…So Good…So What and yeah that album benefitted from its 2002 remaster. Not that the two “Peace” albums it sits between aren’t amazing as well. While I’m giving somewhat controversial opinions Bathory’s Twilight of the Gods would be in my top ten. And finally if I were to sit and make a top ten list limiting myself to one Type O Negative album would be impossible. I was gonna try to actually make my own list but limiting myself to ten and then ordering them would take far too long.

These are all very classic metal albums. I can't do anything with Black Sabbath at all, I find their albums badly aged. For me, the sound and production of an album is also important, so I personally find Metallica's Black album better than the two in the list (but I still love them too). I miss the newer bands, but in the last 20 years metal has split into more and more subgenres. So I understand that the bands in the Google list are the ones that most people can agree on. I don't presume to say what is objectively the best metal album. Many albums are connected to certain situations in my life and therefore important to me. I tend to love albums many fans would hate, like Turbo / Juda Priest, Savage Amusement / Scorpions or Crazy Nights / Kiss.
