The audiobook version of Girl, Woman, Other is stunning. The narrator gives it so much life. It's a joy.

I also read Mr Loverman in June and thought it a little bit superb. I love to see older characters represented in fiction, but to have older characters represented with such depth and humour filled me with admiration for the author. She-Clown and How to Do Nothing both sound like books that I might seek out in future.
I hope July's reading brings you a few new favourites.

I looooove the phrase you used: “it went into my brain and ironed things out.” HOW ELOQUENT AND SPOT ON! Sometimes I have trouble articulating how a book has changed me, or how it’s affected me in general, and I’m definitely going to use that phrase in the future. Haha besides that, awesome video. I really would like to read ALL of the books you recommended! Especially How to Do Nothing. :)

I read Girl, Woman, Other when it was short listed for The Booker and loved it. I also recently listened to it on audio in preparation for a book club discussion. It was so good both ways. I have Mr. Loverman and Blonde Roots TBR.

I've become totally obsessed with Bernardine Evaristo since reading Girl, Woman, Other. I was blown away by the book and it's really stayed with me. I'm currently about halfway through Mr Loverman and like you totally love Barrington. Looking forward to seeing how the story resolves. Also picked up 3 of her other books, because of reasons. x

I loved these reviews, Jen. In depth, articulate, and with such a lovely artist eye and ear. Your reviews are always fascinating, but these really stood out to me. I just ordered Mr Loverman yesterday. I’m still sort of looking for an entry into Girl, Woman, Other. I’m not sure what is keeping me from picking it up. It seems a bit intimidating. Perhaps it’s just the length. I’ve got the physical book and the audiobook, so between the two, I should be able to get into it. Your discussion on it here and the quote you read definitely pulled me in. I am determined to have it read before the Women’s Prize is announced, so if my beloved Hamnet doesn’t win, I’ll at least be able to compare. 😊

I've wanted to read How to do Nothing so badly and the way you spoke about it made me feel like I might have to buy it soon..! i'm reading Ahmet Altan sword wound and it's rubbish, but i paid good money for it not cheap, so i'll finish it. because of an Elif Shafak book review. It's one of those written by a randy old bloke books europe had lots of in the 60s where freudianism meant everything dissolved into sex - she goes to worship, has half an orgasm, sees a handsome man, imagines she's in love, has an orgasm blah. Plus it's like wm maxwell 'the chateau' also reading (his dullest to date, but he can write) the woman has no character. Not that there's excess of that with the man. Like Ali Smith, es is someone whose books are just alright who writes book reviews that would sell ice to an eskimo whose taste in literature is dreadful, i should learn: what you most like reading and should read more of is, her book reviews! 'the chateau' is pretty dull when the arrive there, up until there it's beautiful, perfect, because he captures that travelling feeling so absolutely perfectly. Which is what i most miss. (I know, i should say 'i miss my friends' but it's that feeling of freedom i really miss.)

yeah this has been a sht reading year, 'everything i read turns to sht' to misquote Midas, srsly random and not making me ungrumpier neither!!!!!!!!!!!! I've managed to find a sht Cynthia Ozick book to go with the dull Maxwell! I mean, every sentence was a masterpiece, but the whole was water, nuffink. I think austen's emma has been the best book i read and i am not a fan of rereading, it's just free is a great price and gutenberg is there

I really disliked how to do nothing. First, it is an essay collection, with seperate essays, not connecting chapters. Second, if I want to do read half baked ramblings, I can do it for free on reddit. Though the joke is on me, since I really wanted it for the cover. Also, I was really tired of bird watching by the end of this book, and found the whole 'connect with nature since that's our human destiny' vibe really annoying.

    Sir...what is this?
    …This is the Que.
    The que... to what?
    Why...the que to grow,
    and soon you will go,
to new places and new heights,
where you will shed all of your woe.
    Oh...is that so?
    It is,
for here your soul can never be low,
for rapture you shall eternally sow,
as you go toe-to-toe with the wonders of the firmament,
just beyond this pretty blue bow.
Now cut this bow, come on, don’t be shy...
    it’s time to say goodbye
    to your understandings below.
it’s time to go beyond the sky.
It’s time to reach beyond your dreams.
It’s time to go where imagination can’t take you,
it’s time to exceed the seams of reality.
for here you can only grow.
Now don’t say it ain’t so because it is,
    and it always has been....
    well...
    so.
Now blow a final kiss down below
    to all that you know,
for it’s time to start the real big show.
And your soul, in throe of transcendence,
    beyond this pretty blue bow,
    shall forever glow
    all so bright,
    all without blight,
    in this transformative flow,
and I promise to throw you back
    with a ruthless attack
if you decide to say no
    and go back
    to all that you know,
    down below.
Endless gifts I will stack all for you,
as long as you stay in my sight
and keep me in the know,
but I know you won’t stoop low.
    Face it, your only way is forward;
    your only way is my delight;
    isn’t that right?
    As you go,
    past this pretty blue bow,
    in this que
    of this marvellous hue,
    beyond this blue,
    into all this white,
    all so bright
    and out of divine sight.
Come with me into the light...
    and begin your new life,
for this is the last step of your old life,
    or was it a life,
    or was it a lie?
    Whatever...say goodbye.
    Your old journey,
    your first,
    your false,
    started low.
    Your true journey starts here
    Now
    And
    my
    my
    are you high.
    Now whisper
    bye
    bye
    to all behind,
and shout a very loud hi beyond that pretty blue bow.
    It's time to fly.
