    1. The show was originally supposed to be 18 episodes, but it was cut due to budgetary restraints.
    2. Some cut episodes include:
    - “Ivory” with a man named mr. whittles who made dice out of the teeth and bones of children he kidnapped
    - episode featuring a skinless witch who kidnaps Greg while the brothers are asleep
    - multiple episodes where the boys have been turned into animals!

      The Beast is actually voiced by (imho) one of the greatest operatic basses who's ever lived, Samuel Ramey. He played Don Giovanni in the 1990 Metropolitan Opera production of Don Giovanni -- one of my favorites. Here's a link of him in his element >> czcams.com/video/Ioc9shJa_lI/video.html . He also played Mephistopheles in The Damnation of Faust, it's one of the many operas I would give an arm, a leg, and my firstborn to have seen in person.

The frog (ofc), the Beast, Enoch, the Tailor, and the Highwayman to name a few, are all very prominent American singers, with a lot of them having folk roots. This in my opinion perfectly works with the Americana the show is littered with--it's such a small detial, but it adds so much.

    I love the idea of The Unknown being purgatory and I actually thought the show’s creators meant for this. One episode in particular that set this idea is the Potsfield episode. When Wirt bumps into the girl pumpkin/skeleton she doesn’t think he’s not suppose to be there just that he was too early. (Not decomposed yet). Also on the last episode where the woodsmen gets to see his daughter is when I believe he was finally able to pass over and finally reunite with her. Her being able to pass over because she didn’t hold any ill will towards her father and had no regrets where her father had to stay in The Unknown due to the fact that he couldn’t accept that she was gone and was duty bound to the Beast. I love this show so much and always watch it in the fall seasons at least twice ❤️🥰

    i think greg is good at navigating the unknown because of both his childhood innocence and because he does deep down have somewhat of a recollection of it. its often said that very young children have one foot in the spirit world, and also are more likely to remember details about their past lives. i think the unknown is a purgatory that people in over the garden wall are then literally or figuratively reborn from if they can overcome their flaws and purify their souls, depending on if they enter truly dead or not.

    I saw somewhere that someone had a theory similar to the “Greg has been to The Unknown before” one, but even stranger!
    In short; in the Cloud City episode, Greg’s wish to the cloud queen was basically to go back in time and repeat their experience in The Unknown. It’s suggested that a “previous” experience had mistakes and perhaps they weren’t able to help everyone. Greg wished to go back, and knew what to do this time; hence why he is so calm and carefree about almost everything in the version of events we see.
    Seems like a weird theory to me, but thought I’d share it anyways.

    I have the OtGW artbook, and while it states in there that they wanted the turtles and their meaning to be somewhat obscured, the book also calls Auntie Whispers a "sin eater" of sorts, which is interesting given that she collects and eats the black turtles. If you look closely at her, her mouth and teeth are black, and her teeth are also...not in the best condition. So it seems like while her task is important, it's also taking a physical toll on her.

    I think the thing about Greg being familiar with the unknown makes sense if you think about reincarnation. Babies could be seen as souls from heaven, hell or purgatory that just got reincarnated so it would make sense why a child would be more familiar with the unknown. It's something they've more recently experienced compared to a teenager or adult.

    The backstory on Fred the horse is kind of interesting to me. Especially when he tells the judge about the highway man. The story seems comical (as y'know, talking horse), but it is also interesting in the sense that in some states in the U.S. there is an old law where horses can act as legitimate witnesses to crimes. Granted I'm not sure how that law actually works in court as it has probably never been used since cars became common.
    Even if it was mere coincidence, it's still a neat one when you know weird old timey laws.

    I'm personally hesitant to equate the Beast with Satan, but perhaps it's just a personal thing (I really don't like the balck/white morality of good/evil). I more see him as the personafication of decay, entropy, a force of nature that we all fight against. This series is very meaningful to me, I often remember it in my darker moments. The Beast's song especially: "Sorrow and pain is easily forgotten, if you submit to the soil of the earth" - so reassuring and comforting, but in those moments of darkness, it helps me to remember, that I should not fight for this comfort, but against it.

    Also, my favorite voice actor was the guy who did Fred the Horse... "I wanna steal..." Af for the turtles, I always saw them as the embodiment of "danger" or "evil," and when Auntie Whispers eats them, she's keeping Lorna safe from the danger (which is why her teeth have rotted away - the evil has rotted her teeth). When they infest a living creature, the creature turns evil, and characters throughout the series are always trying to keep the danger/evil away by getting rid of the turtles. I'm very open to being wrong, though.

Specifically in Pottsfield, the music they are singing is being sang in the Scared Harp style, and was clearly written in that style too. If you listen to the full version, they even do the Sacred Harp solfege before. All this to say, is that this music originated in New England and is prominent in early North American tradition. It still remains popular there as well as the South. (But there are even groups on the West coast that get together to sing this music.) Great video!

    I think they survived because they were being “chased” by the police and probably the officers saw them climb the wall and they went around the wall or climbed it and saw them fall in the water, or the train operator saw two kids fall in the water and notified someone to go check on them since he can’t stop the train to go save two kids. As for their journey in the unknown, I think their souls did go there but that was from the time they first became unconscious to waking up in the hospital. There is a saying that our souls leave our bodies when we sleep and maybe they go to other universe in other bodies and that’s our dreams. That’s what I like to believe.

    To do with the after life theory: long story short I completely agree… if you listen to the song *Old Black Train* which plays in the pre penultimate episode where Greg and Wirt fall on the rail way tracks and first “enter” the unknown, the entire song is about passing into death. You don’t need a ticket it’ll take you in its time, where it goes you can’t come back from, and most importantly *come on now young stranger, you were someone’s son, why are you at this depot, it’s not where you belong*. Essentially the song sums up the entirety of the theory, they weren’t meant to die that day but they were on the ,quote on quote, “black train” passing through to death.

      No. This show isn't religious in the slightest. I've seen bloggers and other youtubers drawing parallels between Dante's Inferno and OTGW and they miss the mark completely.
      There is no deep, meaningful message beyond what's presented in the show. It's a story about two boys caught in a journey between life and death. The Beast is a folklore character much like east England's Lantern Man or Russia's Baba Yaga. He lures souls into the woods and when they're lost and have given up hope, claims them in the forest. It's a classic folklore tale inspired by early American settlers where their greatest threat wasn't religious in nature -- it was nature itself.

    • @TurquoiseIcy
      @TurquoiseIcy Před 2 lety +16

      @@theaggressivesalesman2424 The Divine Comedy references are definitely intentional, I am not saying that the show is religious in nature nor do I know where you got the idea that that was what I was implying. If the Inferno references are as obvious as they are in the show it is safe to assume that the writers would take inspiration from one aspect of the poem, When Greg and Wurt go deeper into the unknown they end up in a snowy part of the woods which is very likely a reference to Inferno where Dante and Virgil go to the ninth circle of hell, a frozen lake. Dante and virgil see the devilin that place, similar to how Greg and Wurt end up finding the beast in the snowy place.

    • @TurquoiseIcy
      @TurquoiseIcy Před 2 lety +3

      I'm not saying it is not inspired by American folklore too, because it is. But the decision to call the creature who scouts for souls in the deepest part of the unknown "The Beast" is very deliberate.

    I'll have to correct you here. THE wendigo. Not a wendigo. People often conflate skinwalkers and wendigos. Skinwalkers are essentially the native American version of witches, which there are many. They are aligned with / possessed by THE Wendigo, which is a satan-esque figure. The mythos is rather complicated and most of the people who are in the know (elders) do not like to talk about them, but that is the very simplistic rundown. In many ways the woodsman is like a skin walker with the beast being the wendigo living in his shadow and getting him to do his bidding. The only reason I am leaving this comment is because I am of the belief that The Wendigo holds no power over me and so I can speak of him all I want, I am not afraid of the devil in the wood and I think this is the underlying message of over the garden wall.
