It's a flail. Great paint job. For my gnolls, I use Reaper's Olive Skin Tone for the base and Olive Skin Tone Highlight then top it off with Vallejo sepia wash (mixed with water so its not so strong). For the main or neck hair I use Vallejo Model Color German Camo Black Brown thinned down. I use the same approach to painting hyenas, but add spots using the same vallejo black brown.
As a side note about the weapon and not too sound like a crazyuptightneverbeenlaid nerd, but it's always gotten under my skin how people get maces, morningstars and flails mixed up. Twenty plus years of playing D&D, I've come across it often.

+mike breazeale You can buy weapons sprues with different spare weapons from a variety of brands. They'll usually be named something along the lines of "bits" and "armory" in different constellations. Flails are one of the harder bits to find in a decent variety, in my experience. For swords, it might be cheaper to look at toothpicks in the local grocery store first, quite a few plastic toothpick designs can make for decent mini blades, and you'll pay dimes on the dollar compared to the "real" thing.
Thanks for getting back to me. I'd like to use them...a flail ball on some chain and a bigger sword to replace weapons on a figure kit so toothpicks are not going to do it. If you have any other ideas I'd really appreciate them. I want a very cool kinda oversized sword. At least 3" long. Maybe A little longer too. Just looking for options. Thanks again.
mike breazeale If you want a sword that large, at neglible cost/effort, you might want to go straight for plastic utensils instead. Some are very thin and most are obviously butterknives, but with a little luck your local shops will have something that looks weapon-y. Best of luck.

weapon is a morning star , at least that's one name "from IRL" for them
I wanted to use this gnoll as a champion or higher in my Oathmark gnoll force using Frostgrave Gnolls. This gnoll looks more like 32mm than 28mm. Will it fit on a 25mm base?
A medieval weapon noted as a mace and chain. Called " A Morning Star" during the crusades. Looks as dangerous to the user as to the receiver. Great job. Thanks.
ManicheanWarrior actually, that’s a flail. A morning star is attached to a pole instead of a chain.
Not sure if you have any of them, but if you do, it would be great to see you do one of the Tiik (fishmen) that came out in I think either the first or second bones kickstarter. I can't figure out for the life of me how to get a realistic blend of colors on them that really look natural.

An amazing paint job! I've had my Gnoll sitting here for so long, been meaning to paint it, but couldn't decide a good color scheme to use(also couldn't come up with a good technique to use with all of it's nooks and crannies, I'm still new to this, I've only painted 3 miniatures so far), but I think I may have to use your video as a reference! It looks so amazing, I'll just have to make a basic version of yours(since I just started I don't have many colors to choose from, my collection is still small). Just one quick question, how do you connect your bases? It seems since you use the privateer press ones you use the little slot at the bottom, but I assume you also use an adhesive. I was just wondering what adhesive you use, and how you make the bones base blend into the base plate when you connect them.
Edit: Sorry I know, so many questions, but I was just wondering if you also had any preferences of how you do rusty metal?
Gentlemanly Squirrel, I connect my bases using cyanoacrylate glue like zap-a-gap. The blending between the bones base and the base plate occurs when I use a sand/dirt/pebble mix on top of Elmer's glue to give the base texture. I'll make a video explaining my process based upon your request but until then, you can look at one of my older videos, "How to base your miniatures, basically" which should get your started. Rusty metal? That sounds like a good idea for the subject of another video as well! Thanks for the inspiration! :)

I know that Reaper mentions no need to prime their minis. Does the Badger Stynylrez Primer remain tacky the bones units? If so, how long is the wait for un-tackiness?
I have never seen the Stynylrez primer go tacky on bones minis. Generic primer from the dollar store I first used did however go tacky, and I had to dunk the model in Simple Greene to clean it off.

Oops. Christian is correct. According to Stone's Glossary of arms and armor it is indeed a flail of Swiss design. (That was pretty pedantic wasn't it? ) Sorry ;-)
The weapon is called a Flail. its a Morning Star With a chain.

+Joseph Lynn Common mistake, really. Understandable considering the only difference between a mace and morningstar is one has flanges the other spikes. And the ball on a morningstar is identical to the one on a flail. : )

Didn't you say not to prime bones miniatures in your how to paint bones video? Have you decided it's better to prime?
Reaper touts Bones material as you don't have to prime it. I always prime my miniatures.
