At least the film did not say that Rowland and Workman did not want the railroad to cross their rancho otherwise how do you explain why many members of the Rowland and Workman families were on the committee that championed bringing the railroad to Los Angeles. This can be found in the local newspaper of the time the Los Angeles Star. And also why did Rowland and Workman family members sell land to the railroad earlier than others that owned land on the route closer to Los Angeles. This can be found in the California Railroad Commission route maps in the California State Archives. The maps list the name of the person that sold the land to the railroad company, and the date of the transfer. It seems that the belief that Rowland and Workman did not want to have the railroad cross their rancho is based on a 1919 newspaper article in the then local newspaper. Rowland and Workman had been long dead by this time and historically the support that the railroads had received from the public to have the railroads connect with their cities had reversed to the extent that the California Railroad Commission was set up to regulate the railroads in California because of abuses by them toward the public.
