    one thing you kinda missed... steam does a lot of promotion for games like DCS. When someone plays Ace Combat 7 or War Thunder, they'll occasionally get a "Other games you might like" notification in Steam, and DCS will be one of the games that pops up. This ultimately results in new users getting into the game who may not have even heard of DCS prior to that. So in effect, that money that Steam takes also goes to advertising, money that ED would have to spend anyway in ad campaigns.

      @@matthewjackson5325 I discovered DCS through Steam, not youtube, because I did not watch any related content on youtube before playing. And while I would agree that most companies aren't paying the 30% cut for unspecific marketing tactics, they are paying 30% cut for overall visibility.
      I am not claiming to be the rule, however I would be interested in some data that could give insight on what that distribution of the player base looks like.

    Hey! A couple Steam advantages vs standalone not mentioned in the video, mostly specific to Argentina and similar economic-challenged countries: cheaper prices for the same stuff, and far less trouble with credit cards and payments (Steam usually works with local payment methods that most people have, while standalone requires international payments which are quite restricted here).

      Not in Europe. I am from Czech republic and prices on Steam are in Euros. It is different for me if the price is same in Eur and US Dollar (US Dollar is 5 - 10% cheaper for me). Last week I migrated to standalone and do fresh installation of DCS and got almost 30 FPS more. I don´t know if it is because of standalone version or clean installation (maybe over years there was some garbage or mods or whatever on my machine) but I am really happy about it 🙂

    As mentioned below, another benefit of using steam is the worldwide availability of currencies. I live in Brazil and the USD here is quite expensive so even though we still pay the same amount of money but converted, we don't have to worry about fluctuating prices plus we get some national options for payment. This is actually the reason that I keep at steam xD

    The automatic updates is what keeps me on Steam the most (that and I hear plenty about banks blocking payment via credit card or PayPal to EDs website) but man does it REALLY kill my mood when I get everything like my controllers, head tracking and all set up... go to launch DCS... and then... get smacked with an update that might take me a few hours to download...

      @@AdamCasada Technically yes. The main thing is that if you don't have the right version, you won't be able to join any servers for multiplayer. You don't own your game with Steam. It's all find and dandy until you have a problem with them you realize you have absolutely no leverage because all your games are on Steam. Believe me, I went through this.

    • @Marc42
      @Marc42 Před rokem +2

      @@zi0 I simply try to have everything there, it's slick and convenient, auto-updates, friends are there for the most part (and Discord nowadays), and download speeds always make use of my full available bandwidth. One folder contains all the bulky game installs, screenshots go there and are always on F12.... dunno, lots of small things honestly.

    • @Marc42
      @Marc42 Před rokem +3

      @@borkug1566 IANAL, but for all I know you never own games / software anyway, but you get a license for them, which makes your use of the game media (physical or download) legal or not - something like that. DRM and all that is optional and depends on the publisher /rights holder, so there are DRM-free games on Steam as well (not sure about DCS, neither on Steam nor on standalone). Sure Valve / Steam could go down at some point, but the same is true of ED, who (unlike Valve) are not exactly "too big to fail". And for the ssme reason I actually prefer "buying" movies on Prime over "renting" on Netflix, because these purchases will remain accessible in 95% of the cases even after they are not offered anymore for some (typically legal) reason.
