  • Profession Christine Hayes came to Congregation Neveh Shalom to give two lectures as part of Rabbi Joshua Stampfer's Bible class.
In this lecture - ‘We’re no Angels:’ Holiness and Perfectionism in the Bible and Rabbinic Judaism - Professor Hayes asks, can humans achieve holiness and perfection? What is the nature of the perfection to which humans should aspire? Beginning with the Talmudic phrase "The Torah was not given to Ministering Angels" this lecture explores radically diverse ancient Jewish conceptions of the nature of human perfection and whether or not humans can be, or should aspire to be, like angels.
Professor Christine Hayes of Yale University is the leading biblical scholar of our time. Her most recent book, "What’s Divine about Divine Law?", received the 2015 National Jewish book Award and the 2016 Jordan Schnitzer Award from the Association of Judaic Studies.

It's far more worthy to listen and learn from the intellectual gifts of a beautiful woman, it's divine.

In a time of ugly and base public discourse, to listen to the fine intellectual acuity and articulate presentation of Dr Hayes is like the touch of cold water on a parched throat.

I'm not Jewish, but I'm a fan of these lectures. I like to play with the idea that in the natural world, there's nothing that shows G-d exists, and He seems to want it that way. This situation allows us to choose whether we pay attention to Him or not, and perhaps he doesn't want to force us. If we knew He existed the same way we know our physical beings exist, we'd be wage earners and not sons. The assertion that He is Holy - meaning "set apart" is consonant with this idea. It does look like the holiness described here is mostly social rather than existential, but it's all still food for thought 🤔. Thank you!

Dr. Hays never disappoints. Although, while the term "robo-righteousnesss" is felicitous for her scholarly point, her citing of multiple accounts of Talmudic criticisms of the angels, in concerted disagreement with G-d, makes it look like the angels have quite a bit of free will; not to mention the complex ancient literature of fallen angels.

as long as you start from the wrong premise that the Bible is wrong and the Egyptian timeline is right then you have learned nothing from recent research that. When you go to the original Septuagint timeline you find the solution of all of your doubts and problems timewise.

Does Christine Hayes actually believe that Yahweh is real and that the Tanakh depicts history? She speaks as if she does, but perhaps this is only for effect.

Holiness and perfection are not the same. What is holy or divine, by definition, belongs to the world of religion, of theology, that is, of tradition, or better said, of fantasy or fiction, while perfection has a more secular connotation, and belongs, therefore to the real world. Humans have been perfecting ourselves throughout our history: we no longer eat each other; we no longer practice slavery; women already have rights similar to those of men; even non-human animals have been granted legal rights. And all this we have achieved not thanks to religion but in spite of it, because religion is the most conservative institution of all; it clings to past conceptions, ignoring as much as possible the advancement of knowledge. What is holy, or divine, according to theological fiction, emanates from the gods, or from god, who is or are the only beings of divine nature. By extension everything that God touches is holy or divine. Thus, the tanaj is a set of holy books, because they represent the word of God; Mount Sinai is a holy place because on that Mount Moses received the commandments; Moses, Isaiah, Jeremiah and Ezekiel were holy men, because they were chosen as prophets by God; the Jewish people are also a holy race for they are God's chosen people. Yes, the Jews consider themselves a holy race, the Bible states that itself, which is a pity (from a secular point of view) because it carries with it consequences. The Holocaust was not the result of the follies of a single people who believed themselves to be superior, but of two.

Thanks. The archangels have been sent out as messengers, of good news. The 7 archangelss found in Enoch are the seven stars in revelation. These are hoky angels, however, a seraphim angel is serpentile, 6th in rank of archangels. They can materialise and posess bodies, they have mated with humans in the past, and the seeds of vipers/serpents are the tares that live amongst the wheat, and will be plucked up and burnt in the lake of fire, the angels will be sent out as reapers. The anointed cherub of ezekiel 28 was set on the mountain of god, he walked on firey stones and was made of precious stones, which i believe angels are made of precious stones pulverised, gold pulverised causes levitation. Their atomic structure is 144,000 , human cells are 666. 6 protons 6 neutrons, 6 electrons, the number of a man is 666. The angel became conceited/narcissism is born as he is jealous of humans, and his creator and wants worship for himself and he got to deceive the 1st 2 humans and they chose to know good and evil, like the angels and our creators. Rev 12:9 genesis 3: 15 narcissists lack mercy, Empaths, are merciful, you know them by their fruits, and the children of serpents/seraphim are possessed by these by emitting works of the flesh galattans 5 reveal the works of holy/true spirit and the works of the flesh are opposed to each other. The emnty is one loves truth one hates truth, one love god and neighbour, the other loves self before god and man.
