Dearest Deborah, you are the gem on Zed's youtube channel, my goodness your work is outstanding & your teaching is above & beyond the ordinary. Truly amazing artist ! Thank you Zed for your continued highlighting these wonderful craftsmen & craftswomen for all of us to continue learning our craft. Peace brothers & sisters !
As always i sincerely appreciate your kind words Penelope and I would love to get your goodself on video one day as I truly admire your work and artistry too ~Peace~
It's so great that you spend time looking at the spoons and talking about the wood and the effects of baking before you get on to the 'how to'' - there is as much education in looking at and understanding the best work as there is in showing the techniques. Now I have to carve enough spoons for my oven.
Sincerely appreciate your kind words Andrea and indeed, Deborah is fantastic when it comes to teaching and demonstrating her craft ~Peace~

I’ve been making spoons for about a year now, found this video searching for different methods of treatment.. and WOW, love your work!! So inspiring.
Thank you kindly Mark and chuffed to hear you found this video interesting. Wirth mentioning that I have many other spoon related videos listed on my blog for easier navigation - zedoutdoors.com/video-tutorials
Having watched many spoon videos… many carvers cannot remember what woods have been used on a lot of the spoons. So I had a thought. Why not make a wood marking? The same as silver or gold have markings. Have a marking for each kind of wood to go along next to the makers mark.
Thats a very good idea David, akin to a universal stamp ~Peace~
Thanks a lot!!! Really beautiful designs!
They are indeed and thank you for watching ~Peace~
Not sure any wood is unremarkable in the hands of this master! Such beautiful wooden sculptures :-)
Amen to that ~Peace~
I really, really, really appreciate these videos. They’re helping so much in my new spooncarving journey! Thank you so much!
That's awesome to hear John and worth mentioning that I have all of the tutorials listed on this page for easier navigation - zedoutdoors.com/video-tutorials

Thank you for sharing the idea of baking wooden spoons. I love carving spoons and here in Hawaii I primarily carve mango li-chi and breadfruit. Baking the li-chi gave the spoons a beautiful look .

Funny thing is, at the end when you guys mention combining cooking with spoon baking, that is what I do when my lady bakes a cake, I take the chance to bake my spoons.
Thats very cool to hear, spoons and cake is a great combo! :) ~Peace~
Zed outdoors wow I’m always looking for new avenues to explore I heard of cooking spoons but to actually bake one interesting lol 😂 that’s a new one on me I has to try this out I do warm up my spoons before I apply vegetable cooking oil on finished spoons I never use any nut oils incase someone has a nut allergy stay awesome dude keep up great work 👍🇮🇹🦊🐾
Indeed yes it's always important to use an oil thats safe for you and many thanks for the kind words John! ~Peace~
@@Zedoutdoors np keep up the great content 👍🇮🇹🦊🐾🍀
Hey Zed, another wonderful video! A thousand thanks for showing 🙏🙏👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼🙏🙏🙏🙏... I'll also bake one or two spoons😎
Greetings - Maik🙏
This is amazing; baking spoons! I love learning (about) new techniques like this. Keen to try it out.
You've also answered the question I came here with: Is it feasible to make spoons out of elm? I have piles of it, but have had mixed results when attempting to make larger items like cheese/cutting boards. Often it pretends to be fully seasoned then, after being worked into something nice, warps or splits overnight just to spite me. Seasoned British elm is of course pretty hard and not a lot of fun to carve, but now I know a spoon is possible I will make an attempt.
Thanks for posting!
🇬🇧
Sincerely appreciate your kind words David and happy carving my friend! ~Peace~
Thanks a lot!
Thank you Dario! ~Peace~
I am going to try this baking on some mango spoons.
Do let us know how you get on Bruce! ~Peace~
This video couldn't have come at a more perfect time! Just finished a spoon yesterday and I was wondering "hmm... How do people bake or carbonize their spoons?"
Thats awesome to hear Joel and do let me know how you get on with trying the technique yourself ~Peace~
Thank you so much for your amazing videos! I have learned so much. Can you tell me if the spoons need to be totally dry to bake them, or can green wood be baked as well? Thank you
Sincerely appreciate the kind words my friend! Ideally the spoon should be dried before baking, as otherwise you have the risk of it cracking what with it still having moisture inside the wood ~Peace~
@@Zedoutdoors Thank you for the quick reply Zed! I will do so and can't wait to see the results! Best regards from Austria 😊🙏👊🏽🔥🏕️🌲
Thanks Deborah. Just stone burnished a hard dry oak spoon with a quartz ball that I sharpen with too. It can proof the grain as well it seems, as I found a few firm whiskers still standing that I scraped down. What about the scraping stroke? I used to consider it my final move on the finest, but now back and forth between the stone and the scrape is even finer. Peace Out.
Hi Tim, indeed there are many objects you can use as a burnisher and i've seen people get very creative when it comes to that. Sincerely appreciate you watching and for the kind words ~Peace~
I've found that baking wood, at least birch, makes it shrink quite a lot across the grain/fibers. It's been quite noticeable on on things that you've made to be totally circular which gets a slightly oval shape but also on spoons. Something to keep in mind.
Appreciate your insights Ronnie and for watching ~Peace~
Love her work
Do you think bowls could be baked successfully using her methods?
Thank you kindly John, indeed yes you can use this technique on most woodenware ~Peace~
Hi Deborah :) Thanks for this video ! I was wondering what type of cloth you use to polish your spoons ?
Hi Jessica thank you for your kind words and Deborah uses a standard cotton cloth to do that ~Peace~
If you wanted to darken only parts of the spoon, would oiling those parts only then baking work? Thanks
Technically it would work yes ~Peace~
Any advice on how to get rid of the flavour of the wood for an eating spoon? I used juniper and it tastes too much, I wonder that if I bake it may taste less..
The taste of the wood will go away after a period of time and many uses, just need a little patience ~Peace~
Please forgive my ignorance, but why are you baking the spoons? What is the purpose of baking them versus leaving them natural?
It's simply a decorative technique ~Peace~
Can anyone speak to the polymerization of the walnut oil at the elevated temperature? Is this a good method of "sealing" a spoon in a quicker way than letting the sun do it over weeks?
Both have their pros and cons, heating the spoon using this method is mainly for the colourisation of the wood itself ~Peace~
I reach best results on 150 degrece (without fan) celsius for near 1,5 hours.
Appreciate you sharing your findings Peco ~Peace~
Great video. Not a lot of info out there right now on this.
Indeed there isn't hence I was so eager to film a video on this. Many thanks for watching and for the kind words thank you ~Peace~
The spoon baking is an exciting new step. What kind of oil is being used ?
Walnut oil
Hi Anthony as mentioned in the video the oil used in this instance is Walnut oil ~Peace~
Can I also do my kuksa in the oven? Thanks👍🏼🍀
You can yes but you have to be extra careful regarding temeprature and length of time ~Peace~
so is baking just to change the color of the wood?
Yes it's primarily a cosmetic thing ~Peace~
The artist, lady. I like her accent too. Does she baking kuksa too?
Thats a good question, unless i'm mistaken don't think she has yet! ~Peace~
does baking them make them stronger or last longer?
Not really Keith, mostly a decorative thing in specific relation to small items such as spoons ~Peace~
Do you burnish the spoon before baking?
Hi Katie, yes it's better to burnish before baking ~Peace~
1/2 Hour at 180-200 C (356-392 F, Gas Mark V-VI)
Thanks for watching ~Peace~
Do you spoon carve your self zed?
Hi Wayne, I do yes, although I typically don't post anything about it as I treat as 'me' time away from social media. That being said I will at some point do a video on it ~Peace~
