James Arthur Baldwin (August 2, 1924 - December 1, 1987) was an American novelist and social critic. His essays, as collected in Notes of a Native Son (1955), explore intricacies of racial, sexual, and class distinctions in Western societies, most notably in mid-20th-century America. Some of Baldwin's essays are book-length, including The Fire Next Time (1963), No Name in the Street (1972), and The Devil Finds Work (1976). An unfinished manuscript, Remember This House, was expanded and adapted for cinema as the Academy Award-nominated documentary film I Am Not Your Negro.
Baldwin's novels and plays fictionalize fundamental personal questions and dilemmas amid complex social and psychological pressures thwarting the equitable integration of not only African Americans, but also gay and bisexual men, while depicting some internalized obstacles to such individuals' quests for acceptance. Such dynamics are prominent in Baldwin's second novel, Giovanni's Room, written in 1956, well before the gay liberation movement.
Under Section 107 of the Copyright Act 1976, allowance is made for "fair use" for purposes such as criticism, comment, news reporting, teaching, scholarship, and research. It’s such a pity that we of this generation has missed one of the most heart warming voices in our long history. Mr Baldwin was so gifted in that he could articulate heart felt experiences in speech to the point we today could try to visualize our past.
We can claim it now. He wrote it to survive him.

Wow! I like that😎
It was easier to know who he was in France. I remember seeing him on literary shows in France. His friends in France were equally brilliant French and American writers, philosophers and artists. Their discussions must have been fascinating.
If Americans read me I would like to know if Chester Himes' novels are known in the USA.
It's unsettling to see people who are not James Baldwin tell you all about what made James Baldwin James Baldwin, when James Baldwin himself left so much writing and so many interviews. ... The attempt at biography by these people falls short of the work of the man himself.
Amen!!
I thought the same way.
I found James Baldwin about 3 months ago. I've watched a lot of videos here, and read two of his books. He is the most articulate thoughtful man I've ever encountered.
@@chrisbutterfield2739 Which of James Baldwin's works have you discovered? You've discovered a treasure.
1:07 you 😂 1:18

Liberty and justice for all humanity.... He has spoken like a Man... James Baldwin is the voice of true person... The world's citizen..
James Baldwin is such a beautiful human being. Genius in its most perfect form. His words have saved me more than once. Thank you, Mr. Baldwin. You are everything.

James Baldwin A Brilliant Man. Thank You God For James Baldwin. ❤️🙏🏽
Beautiful man. His words cut to your soul.
Amen! I love reading his work. And listening to his voice speak the truth!
Great documentary,so hard to squeeze his works, entire life in less than an hour
Fantastic. The voice of Baldwin rumbles deeply whenever we pick it up to read.
Baldwin observed with words that compel me to want more information on that topic. Thank you, sir...
I never heard of him before and i need to read his work because he seems interesting. His work of talking about race, bisexual and gay men, and prejudices in the United States and Civil Rights Movement. This is Black History and i am a mixed young lady and it is important that i educate myself on the Black culture. 💯
James Baldwin was a witness sent from The Creator to remind and enlighten us that respect for humanity and the earth's resources are not distributed equally by people who pushed and shoved their way to leadership.
I cannot imagine someone being refused service in a restaurant because of his or her colour. What an evil thing segregation was.
Interesting the part about how Baldwin felt Robert Kennedy wasn’t being authentic. Sammy Davis Jr felt the same with JFK according to another biography. Once elected, he distanced himself from him.
Wonderful documentary.
Thank you so much 🙏🏽
Legendary
Thank you.
Important piece of history, that resonates in other cultures.. One strong and the other weak.
❤
10/10
This wasn't that long ago...
It allowed him to live and write, the gaps of leaving America and returning from time to time..
“...I wanted to kill her but I couldn’t get close enough to her so I threw a glass of water at her...”
This part took me out, mate😭😭😭😭😭😂😂😂😂😂I know it’s serious but I genuinely can’t 😭😭😭😭🤣🤣🤣🤣
I can tell u live in England 😂
I'm sorry but James Baldwin has too many books, plays, and videos here on CZcams to have a European tell his version of who and what James Baldwin did, and was. I suppose those days are over. It's time for the European Americans to stop focusing on telling other people's story and began focusing on their own people for example one of James Baldwin questions to the European Americans is "Who is the real nigga?
its called study and biography honey! every famous people have em....if it was up to the negroes there'd be nuttin about im
🤙🏽
B lack people in America need to organize. All this marching and protesting, debating is useless..
The record of history shows that protests work, but even protests need ORGANIZATION to be effective
compulsory book reading for a start
Baldwin's writing removes the common emotion from the natural action of man; therefore distancing the reader from what is truly realty lived.
I’m 4 minutes in and I can’t take the black narration. Baldwin was a scholar why does this documentary have that narration? I’m black btw
Black people are scholars also.
Loved white men.
Baldwin is more than his personal relationships lol
Loved human beings.
My husband Stephen Stoller sculpted and painted James’ portraits - I believe the resurgence of Baldwin surfaced at this time - ten yrs ago- the evidence of things not seen a book by Jimmy chronicled the 28 black murders in Atlanta - we were living here at this time in a black settlement - Edgewood next to Grant Park where our children attended third grade- the murders were going on around us - James is sure they arrested the wrong guy
total forgy.
