When she asks the real estate agent about the drains, you laughed and said you didn't think the drains were that important. After reading a lot of British mystery stories from that era, I finally figured out that the "drains" was a euphemism for the toilets and the indoor plumbing! So yeah, the drains could be important! :-)
This is one of my top 5 classic. It doesn’t get enough love.
Mine to.
Same.
One of the great examples of the "supernatural romance" genre ever made - films where something supernatural or metaphysical brings the lovers together, keeps them apart, or both. One of my favorites.
The movie "BETWEEN TWO WORLDS" does the opposite. You would love it.
Portrait of Jennie is another good one
@@johnny-vu6rl Somewhere in Time, also.
Time Travel Romance is my favorite genre, but Supernatural Romance fits the bill.
@@peteg475 My absolute favorite!
This movie tears me up every time I watch it! I especially love the scene that ends with Daniel saying "What we missed! What we both missed!
“My dear….” That monologue Rex Harrison says while she’s sleeping is the best scene. One of my mom and I’s favorite movies. Also, Muir means sea in Gaelic
Rex Harrison quick witted banter...Blithe Spirit 1940's
Free on Plutotv
@@rafaelrosario5331 "Blithe Spirit" is fun. Another British fantasy with a similar tone is the 1948 "Miranda", with Glynis Johns in the very saucy lead role.
_Sea_ is _mar_ in Spanish/Portuguese/Italian/Catalan, _mare_ in Romanian, _meer_ in German, and _mer_ in French.
Forget My Fair Lady - that goodbye scene was the best acting Rex Harrison ever did.
@@12classics39agree 👍
Sanders voice acting as Shere Khan, in "The Jungle Book" is excellent. He was such a slimey character in most roles.
THE most underrated cinematic romance of all time. Gene and Rex brought to life a stunning, sympathetic, timeless love story that deserves to be far more famous than it is. So happy you’ve discovered it!!! The final shot is one of the most satisfying and unforgettable images in all of film.
Was this Natalie Wood’s first movie?
This is the very first movie I watched after Casablanca. I was 15 then. 37 years later I still watch it regularly and love it very much.
I probably first watched it when I was ten, I'm 62 now , I still watch it and love it.
Great Gene Tierney movie. You saw Laura, now you need to see Leave Her To Heaven.
I want her to look at the great ensemble comedy The Mating Season 1951 with Gene Tierney, Miriam Hopkins and Thelma Ritter.
Three grade actresses doing what they do best. Each has their shining moment of truth really great film

Nice to meet another gene fan, I could, not agree more.
Just saw Whirlpool the other night. Not a bad little thriller.
@@PeterKirkMusicianand dragonwyck
its not a great movie on any level in my opinion, even gene could,nt help it! @@romystumpy1197
One of the greatest music scores of all-time. Herrmann lifted a few themes from his opera, "Wuthering Heights." His incredible score elevates this to one of the most romantic movies in cinematic history. So neat that you called attention to it so often. It's almost a Bernard Herrmann symphony with a movie attached to it -- but WHAT a movie!
Hermann said it was his favorite score.
The word you're looking for George Sanders is "cad." He's a cad.
A cad and a bounder, sir! Not only that, the man's a scoundrel, i tell you! Harrumph! 😅
i would have said scoundrel lol he was so much worse in the book!
“I’ve always wanted to be considered obstinate”
Rarely has a movie with such emotionality been so winsome and had such a whipping sense of humor about it. And for a simple romance the entire thing plays with memory and perception in so innovative a way I feel, nothing “works” like it should or how you expect, the movie’s wholly unique. People experience the same things but it goes unsaid for ages, things that are real seem unreal. So melancholy, a quiet depth filling the salty sea air. How it’s delivering this romantic tale to us makes it hit all the harder, but on its own it's already wonderful. Lucy and Daniel butt heads but only because they're so blasted alike, both free spirits in a stifling, unforgiving time. There are times where the only problem I have with it is wanting more of Lucy's daughter and the captain, or, anything, but the line where she reveals awareness of him couldn't be there then, so it's just as well. Still, my headcanon to use modern parlance is he totally used the bad language once or twice but she forgave him and still kept their secret friendship. I'd say to not beat yourself up about initially loving Sanders, on my first watch I absolutely thought, "Maybe they wouldn't be so bad together...." The Ghost and Mrs. Muir makes fools of us all.
Time to rewatch Seven Samurai!
From what I remember the TV series was very good and funny... my older sister and mother watched it quite a bit 😆 I was very Young, but I do remember watching the reruns !
I love the old movies Mia & I really I've found a movie with an older Cary Grant that would be perfect for you.....
Father Goose (1964)
You will love it, Cary a bit older but still "operating" at his very best 😉
( A real hidden gem )
"Father Goose" also has Trevor Howard in a bromance role with Cary (fun) as well as the lovely Leslie Caron.
I love the TV show. All of them are free on CZcams.
@@nellgwenn Thank you... I will definitely check them out 🙂
I hated the tv series.
Thank you so much for reacting to this film. It's one of my favorites. In my opinion, Bernard Herrmann composed the most beautiful and haunting music of his career for this film. This was one of the few times that the 20th Century Fox opening fanfare was replaced by music from the score ... quite an honor bestowed on Bernard Herrmann. Set the mood from the very first second.
I have this on my mp3
Fantastic movie. Gene Tierney was an uncommonly beautiful woman. I just found your channel today (and subscribed) because you clearly have so much respect for the movies you watch, and I appreciate the historical background and facts you give before each reaction. 💙💙
I read a review of the music from this film that said Herrman's music could bring tears out of a stone. 100%, right?
I love the characters in this movie. So grown up and as you said - modern.
Disagree. These characters are classic.
@@billolsen4360 Disagree with what? I was talking about the music. Yes, the characters (which I wasn't commenting on) are classic. 🤷♀️
I want you to go back to the scene where they open the door and you see the face of the captain and then she looks again, she realizes it’s a Portrait. But look at the first Shot its a profile and then the second shot is of the portrait. Captain Craig actually showed himself to her when she looked in she is startled and looks again then they think it’s the Portrait. Take a look it’s beautiful it’s mentioned in a lot of film study.
This is Mankiewicz second film after Dragonwyk which also start Gene Tierney which is a very good Gothic film .
Gasp! I see it!
@@RaymondHng Wonderful right
Wow!!! Thank you so much for your comment, this film is one of my favourites but I’ve ALWAYS had a soft spot for Dragonwyck since catching it on tv as a teenager. I had no idea they were directed by the same person but I’ve often thought about them in relation to one another! Just had a little light bulb moment here - thanks!
A great and I mean great film which is a freebie on utube is Letter from an unknown woman with Louis Jordan and Joan Fontaine beautiful BW photography. The Ghost and Mrs Muir all time favorite
Please consider watching Kind Hearts and Coronets. The first really dark comedy, a film that upset the American censors so much they insisted on a change to the ending and the removal of most of the lines by the wonderful Joan greenwood that related to adultery. Further, it's got Alec Guinness in multiple roles. What more could you ask for. Watching the British original cut is a must for any film buff. Plus nobody has done a proper review/reaction to it, something that is long over due.
Yes, that's a great film - much recommended.
Yeesssss please! One of my favorites!
Ugh to die for. I rarely laugh out loud but this film slays me.
Omg. Best dark comedy ever. Well, all the Ealing comedies.
Absolutely hysterically funny
Just rewatched that film at a library a few days back. Still loved it. One of Gene Tierney's best films and one of my favorites.
I adore this movie, thank you for showing it...
This is one of My favorite movies. If you like George Sanders you gotta watch All About Eve he won a supporting Oscar for that. Also another favorite of yours in All About Eve is Thelma Ritter.
I was just about to suggest that movie. All About Eve is, in my mind, Bette Davis vs George Sanders vs Marilyn Monroe.
George Sanders plays the central role in the All About Eve. So very good!
I read somewhere that Rex Harrison and Jean Tiereny had difficulty with the concept that they couldn’t touch each other. They had to have deep emotional connection without physical touch.
Excellent reaction Mia.
If you love George Sanders, you will have to watch "All About Eve". His Oscar winning performance (Best Supporting Actor) as the acerbic drama critic Addison DeWitt is, in my opinion, one of his most memorable roles. Screenplay and direction also by the great Joseph L. Mankiewicz.. A CLASSIC!!
I love this movie. So, so great. I will watch this several times a year. Love your reviews Mia.
Great reaction to this. It's similar to a film called 'Portrait Of Jennie,' which was released in 1948, and also had a theme by Bernard Herrmann.
I recommended this before but now I see you have a yen for Rex Harrison, you *must* see "Blithe Spirit" 1945 - it stars Harrison, it was written by Noel Coward and was directed by David Lean (who also helmed 'Lawrence of Arabia"). MUST. SEE.
@Crumphorn...and is also about ghosts.
@@crose7412 LOL! Yes, Mia, GHOSTS! Sassy, sarcastic GHOSTS!
Another great supernatural comedy is "I Married a Witch" starring Veronica Lake. I believe it was the inspiration for the t.v. show "Bewitched".
Yes, yet another movie/TVshow inspired by one of novelist Thorne Smith's spicy supernatural comedies (in this case "The Passionate Witch"), along with Topper, Turnabout, and Night Life of the Gods. The novel "Night Life of the Gods" used to send me into literal laughing fits, but one probably has to have an appreciation for Prohibition era humour.
Bell, Book and Candle was the inspiration for Bewitched.
@@petermcculloch4933 are you sure about that? i was sure that i had read that "I married a witch" was the inspiration.
@@seerofallthatisobvious1316 I am absolutely certain.Kim Novak played the witch and James Stewart, the mortal.
So funny.
I'm so glad you are watching old movies like this on your channel. I grew up with these movies and I'd love for them to live on with new fans. If you get the chance, I really hope you watch "Gaslight" with Ingrid Bergman. It's so haunting. I looked through your videos and didn't see a reaction for it yet.
I watched the TV series as a 7 year old. I think it aired on Thursday or Friday night. I watched every week and it was sort of a family comedy. Hope Lange had a much less sensual relationship with the captain. It was more of a light comedy touch but an enjoyable show, set in Maine if I remember. The film is just splendid.
Edward Mulhare wasn't a terrible replacement for Harrison and I've always liked Hope Lange.
I liked her in Pocketful of Miracles as Glen Ford’s girlfriend. What is your favorite film of hers
I watched as a kid too. It was a comedy and it also had Charles Nelson Reilly
@@paintedjaguar In fact, Mulhare replaced Harrison in *My Fair Lady* on Broadway!
Holy cow had no idea it was a show too. Looking this up now! Thanks 😋
This is one of my all-time favorite movies. I just found your reactions today and am thrilled to see someone who's focusing on the classics. Small trivia point -- go back and watch the moment when Lucy first sees the Captain, that's not the painting.
Thanks Mia! So happy we can all enjoy these films together and appreciate them.
Off the top of my old head, my 3 favorite movie scores. The Good, the Bad & the Ugly. Blade Runner. Somewhere in Time. Coincidentally -- Somewhere in Time, while a very different story, has many parallels to the Ghost & Mrs Muir...and very sad aspects to the real backstory of the filming.
The Soundtrack to Somewhere in Time was the best selling movie soundtrack of all time, for a while, I believe. I’ve owned it many times over, on record, cassette, CD, and performances by different orchestras etc. I’ve been a fan of Somewhere in Time for many years. I’ve never been to the annual gathering at Mackinac Island, but I’ve flown to a few other states to catch the film when it has had theater showings, and I attended the NYC premiere of the re-release where I met Chris and Jane and other cast members.
Your reactions are so delightful and in tune…like watching my favorite movies with a BFF. Thank you. ❤
Glad you like them! Thanks so much for watching 😁
OMG! Seven Samurai next! On my list of 11 Greatest Films Ever (I can never get it down to 10).
I smiled when you said George Saunders was probably going to be a snake - he had a long, successful career playing almost nothing but charming snakes. I believe the only time he played an out-and-out good guy was in Foreign Correspondent - an excellent black and white Hitchcock film that's definitely worth checking out.
Yes he was snake like in Rebecca the movie
This one of my all-time favorite movies. My daughter's second middle name is Lucia after this film. Once in my 20s, a woman in her 70s or so told me that I looked like her favorite actress: Gene Tierney. She thought I would not know who she was talking about, but I was beyond flattered. I would say we have similar cheekbones and eye color, but, other than that, there is no comparison to that beauty!
Hopefully your life is far less tragic than Gene's. She never really recovered from the incident where a fan who broke quarantine gave her rubella while she was pregnant. Her daughter Daria was born with severe disabilities because of it.
@@MrVvulf I just recently read about that in "Hollywood Canteen". The woman who unwittingly gave here rubella was a WAC who went to the Canteen to see Ms. Tierney. Many years later, the same (WAC) woman ran into her and told her about having rubella and breaking quarantine. Ms. Tierney did not tell her about getting it and her daughter's disabilities - classy woman.
@@catherinelw9365 There's an Agatha Christie novel with a similar premise about an actress who while pregnant is exposed to measles by a fan ... "The Mirror Cracked."
When Sanders speaks, all I hear is the character of Shere Kahn, the tiger, the dangerous sophisticate that he is in this film.
The series was a situation comedy, so it doesn’t move the way a movie would. There was considerable development of secondary characters and guest spots. The two main characters could only admire each other (him more deeply than her, as he realizes that after all the ladies he flirted with during his lifetime, he finally meets his match when he’s no longer human), but never much more. There was one episode, though, that I still remember called “The Medicine Ball.” Watch that one.
Wait a minute... NATALIE WOOD? Okay... I'm watching this. Funny because yesterday I watched Brainstorm, and today I watched The Cracker Factory. Both of them had adult Natalie Wood in them. I'm so used to seeing child/teenage/new adult Natalie in films like Miracle On 34th Street, Rebel Without A Cause, West Side Story, Splendor In The Grass, Inside Daisy Clover, and The Great Race. After watching the HBO documentary about her, it interested me in checking out some of the work in the 70s/early 80s when she was in her late 30s/early 40s before she was sadly murdered (strangely).
David Niven's autobiography talks quite a bit about Rex Harrison. Its an interesting read. I watched the tv series, Edward Mulhare played Captain Gregg, Hope Lange Mrs Muir (not as sexy as Teirney, but more motherly for tv). It was good, enjoyable.
Yes, I watched the TV series as a young girl, loved it. It had lots of spookifying other visitors to keep Mrs. Muir and her daughter to himself. And yes the daughter interacted with him too. There was a lot of laughter and love..
The Ghost and Mrs. Muir deftly handles on multitude of tones to deliver a haunting love story In classical fashion, The Ghost And Mrs. Muir (1947) 100/100%
Bosley Crowther Is the critic he had a distain for anything she did. Even when she got good reviews on Broadway. It was like he had a personal vendetta against particular actresses.
Scorsese said she’s the most underrated actress of the Hollywood Golden Era.
Was there anyone Bosley Crowther DID like? It seems as if the Wikipedia article on every classic movie mentions that Crowther panned it.
@@tomross5347 He was terrible but he was personal against particular actors scathing.
My obsession with Gene Tierney The Razors Edge Costarring Tyrone power. Somerset Maugham novel which is actually pretty epic Tierney and Power’s are great
Ann Baxter was in the film didn’t really care for her performance thought it was overwrought or maybe I just felt it old fashion.
Great cast
The Razor's Edge is one of my favorite movies.
I've loved this movie since I first saw it when I was a little kid. It was wonderful to see your reaction.
The ending always makes me cry, it's so good. Also, I've seen the TV series, it was very good, but took place in, I believe, New England. It also co-starred Charles Nelson Reilly. I'm sure it's somewhere on CZcams.
My mom introduced me to this movie years ago and it’s one of my favorites! The score is truly compelling and makes you feel wistful, though it’s hard to say what for. I love that you reacted to this, it definitely needs more attention!
Two day after my grandma died.. I saw in my Dreams... Young with her Black long heir... She said i love you...
For that this movie is so special to me!!!! Great film
Your first time watching Rex Harrison? Wow! He is so much fun in every role, and I hope you get to see him in more movies -- such as Blithe Spirit, Anna and the King of Siam, Night Train to Munich -- but above all in My Fair Lady, the movie for which he won his Oscar, and in which he is absolutely brilliant.
This has always been one of my favorite movies, for all the reasons that you mentioned; the location & camera work, Bernard Herman's wonderful music and, well I've been in love with Gene Tierney since I first laid eyes on her. Another film that she was in, "Laura" is definitely worth reacting to!
On a different note, a movie that has ... some "similarities" to "The Ghost and Mrs. Muir" is called, "Somewhere in Time" starring Christopher Reeve and Jayne Seymore with INCREDIBLE music by John Barry. I highly recommend giving it a look-see.
Hey Steven! So glad you had a chance to watch this 😁!! Oh yes I have actually reacted to Laura on the channel!! You can find it here: czcams.com/video/ybE8oAIzZa0/video.html
I will have to check out Somewhere in Time! Thank you for recommending!!
Yes, there was a TV Series. Two seasons. If you watch the ending credits of the series for The Ghost and Mrs. Muir, you might see the same names for the then future series called M*A*S*H.
Jean Tiereny in Leave her to Heaven is just a chilling performance. Also The Razors Edge with Tyrone Power, such a good movie.
As a stickler for details, I couldn't help notice the Captain casting a shadow. This has happened in the tv show also. It doesn't take away from the movie or tv show. I love them both!
Bernard Herrman who wrote the musical score for this movie was a legend. He wrote for other movies as well as for TV shows, but he said this was his favorite score. The chemistry between Daniel and Lucy was intense, you could definitely feel it. :)
If you think Gene Tierney is beautiful in black and white, you should see her in color. She is the most beautiful starlet in Hollywood history as far as I'm concerned.
As one of the characters says in MASH, the most beautiful overbite in the world.
She was so magnetic that a
friend of mine saw her Island
dance in Son of Fury in full colour though It was black and
white. As for me, I went to
Tower's to buy Laura and was told It hadn't been released yet.
Some time later in a dream I
was sitting on a sofa with Gene telling me to go back to
the store as the movie was out
I did and they had Just got It in
Never underestimate women.
Rex Harrison was also in Doctor Dolittle , a movie which was nominated for quite a few Academy Awards.
George Sanders - ‘A Beautiful Cad’ Gene Tierney - A Living Doll, Rex Harrison - A Man’s Man and a Woman’s Weakness.
Herrmann’s music is just wonderful.
I tear up everytime I see this movie. I loved your energy while watching it. Thanks for bringing back some great memories.
Hi Mia! I just discovered your channel and i think it's fantastic
Gene Tierney and Rex Harrison had chemistry I wish they had made other movies together
OMG I can't believe anyone in your age group has even heard of this movie! Wow! I hope this is part of a trend, because it was almost totally forgotten for years. So romantic! So literally haunting! And although Mrs, Muir is such a wimp -- that's how most women's romantic parts were written in the 40s and 50s -- it still plays well. Tiny Natalie Wood, ultra-villain George Sanders (boo, hiss!!), and Rex Harrison's sexiest performance. Have seen it many many times since I caught it on TV in the early 1970s, when I was a teenager. Bless you for reviewing this....
*Historical note:* This movie was released in 1947, so was made just after the end of World War II (1945), when there was a spate of movies about ghosts and the supernatural. England had been particularly hard hit during the war, was fighting for several years before the US got involved, and was cruelly bombed repeatedly throughout, until the very end of the war. It took a decade or so for Britain to truly repair and re-emerge. A lot of Britains were killed, both at home and in the war. Many women lost husbands and boyfriends, and were in deep mourning; many widows had at least one child to raise. These movies helped to comfort the grief-stricken, and gave hope that their loved ones were still with them, guiding them in spirit -- and would come for them when it was their turn to pass. This, imo, is the best of them.
I liked Rex Harrison's Captain calling George Sanders character a parlor snake.🤣😂
This was a risky story to make into a movie. It's easier to suspend disbelief with a book than with a film. You really have to give credit to the actors, the director, the editor, and of course, Bernard Herrman, for making it work.
I've seen the TV series that was based on the movie. It was pretty awful. They made it into a comedy, with Hope Lange as Mrs. Muir, Edward Mulhare as Captain Gregg, and Charles Nelson Reilly hamming it up as Claymore Gregg, Captain Gregg's great nephew.
I agree with you 100% that Gene Tierney was a great beauty. She was stunning. You already saw her in Laura, which is another movie with a great score.
George Sanders specialized in playing scoundrels. If you want to see more of him, watch All About Eve and Rebecca.
Other movies with great scores include Lawrence of Arabia; The Good, the Bad, and the Ugly; The Third Man (which you've reacted to); Psycho; Dr. Zhivago; Fargo; Summer of '42; 2001: A Space Odyssey; Anatomy of a Murder; and The Godfather. I recently re-watched The Conversation, and I loved the music in that movie.
Let's not forget "King Kong" (1933), still a very entertaining movie and one of the first to have an original score. The Max Steiner score is pretty memorable in its own right too.
"All About Eve" is one of the best ever, imo. Some of the snappiest dialog ever writtten.... At the time "The Ghost and Mrs. Muir" was made -- just after WWII, in a deeply wounded Britain -- this movie and a few others like it that focused on the afterlife or spirituality helped to comfort a grieving population. Especially, in this case, widows who were left with a child or children, but also many others who lost loved ones in the bombings as well as in the armed forces overseas. They were just beginnning to pick up the pieces, sift through rubble, and mourn the fallen. Movies like this were uplifting and reflected not only the loneliness of many (Mrs. Muir having lost her husband to death, as well as her ghostly companion melting away in memory), but helped inspire hope for the future.
I'm 56, I remember the first time I watched this with my late grandmother, nanny chick, I became a lifetime fan of the ghost and Mrs muir, such a fantastic movie, and a great time of my life, I felt ever so safe with nanny chick, her name is Ellen Caroline Bilsdon, or Nell, we kids called her Chick with such fondness. ❤️
I have always LOVED this movie. It was so fun to see it through this creators eyes. Especially her view of the cinematography and score. Such a beautiful movie. I’m curious to see more reviews by this creator
I loved watching this. It's one of my favourite movies and film scores -- so beautiful -- and you are so extremely observant. I've just discovered your channel. I'm really excited to see that you watch the Jeremy Brett Sherlock Holmes series. Fantastic -- can't wait to watch more of your videos.
One of my favorites; Beautiful, romantic and heartbreaking. However, I always want Gene Tierney to rise up from that chair and kiss the stoic Rex Harrison passionately for about two minutes.
SAME!!!!!!!!
Mia, first time watching a movie review by you. I'm impressed with your knowledge of older movies and cinema in general. I'll have to watch more of your reviews. Liked and subscribed.
The most spectacular seaside scenes are filmed in a little public turnout along Hwy 1, outside Carmel Highlands, California.
Anyone can stop there, and they do.
A very nice film. I'm not sure how far back in time you're willing to go on the channel but I'd like to toss in a few titles: "Metropolis" (1927), "City Lights" and "The Champ" (both 1931), and director Tod Browning's "Freaks".
If you haven't seen it you should watch Topper with Cary Grant. It spawned 2 sequels as well as a tv show with 2 seasons. It was also the first B&W movie to be colorized.
Terrific choices and commentaries, Mia. Keep up the great drops and yes, music is essential to film and Herrmanns scoring was brilliant.
I watch tons of reaction videos, and this old boomer finds you as smart as you are enchanting. Well done!
How wonderful!! Thank you so much for watching 😁
I remember reading somewhere Bernard Herrman said the score for this film was his favorite of all the ones he did and he based it on sea chanty's.
One of my all time favorite films! Thank you for watching it.
Yay!!! Can't wait to watch! I love Gene Tierney!
I remember Harrison best as Professor Henry Higgins in 'My Fair Lady' with Aud. Sanders was good in 'Village of the Damned'
One of my favorite movies...... totally enjoyed your commentary. You helped me see a lot of things I hadn't noticed before.
Gene Tierney was the actress I fell hardest for when I began watching classic films on a regular basis on channels like TCM. I knew the name - but wow !! that face !! I really liked her other films like "Razor's Edge" with Tyrone Power and, of course, "Leave Her to Heaven" where she gets to play the heavy. "The Ghost and Mrs. Muir" is certainly one of my faves. I remember watching the tv series in the 1960s as a kid. It was more of a romantic comedy, with the ghost (played by Edward Mulhare and Hope Lange as Mrs. Muir) unseen of course - doing crazy things to visiting guests. Wish I'd been exposed to this movie before the tv show - but, as they say, better late than never !!
i grew up during the 1950s/60s, and remember watching the 'Ghost and Mrs. Muir' television program. It was a then-present-day sitcom starring Hope Lange and Edward Mulhare, with Charles Nelson Reilly as Captain Gregg's feckless nephew/great-nephew. You will, I think, have noticed that Mr. Mulhare's make-up was very similar to Rex Harrison's, since the movie was about 20 years old at the time. It was a fun program that ran for two seasons.
If you would like to see George Sanders in another role, I would recommend the very-low-key science fiction film 'Village of the Damned' (1960). (Trivia: George Sanders provided the voice of Shere khan in Disney's animated film 'The Jungle Book'. Disney has a tradition of making animated characters look a bit like the voice actors. George Sanders' wife at the time, Benita Hume, commented that Shere Khan looked more like George Sanders than Sanders himself did! )
I can also recommend 'Rebecca' (Lawrence Olivier, 1940); 'The Adventures of Robin Hood' (Errol Flynn, 1938); 'A Matter of Life and Death' (aka 'Stairway to Heaven'; David Niven, [1946], inspired by a real incident); 'Odd Man Out' (James Mason, 1947); and 'Charade' (Cary Grant, 1963), among many others.
Gene had the most insanely perfect cheekbones. i will have to watch this movie again. saw it all the time when i was a kid, it got rerun on tv often on Sunday matinees.
I watched the TV series when it was on network TV and loved how it adapted the movie for the small screen. One of my favorite characters was the real estate agent that owns/rents Gull Cottage. In the TV series he claimed to be a Great Nephew of Captain Gregg but the Captain said he never met the Nephew's Grandmother.
Just watched this film and IMMEDIATELY came to check if you had reacted to it (and I'm so glad you did 😄)
One of the few romantic movies on my "will always watch again" list. The score is indeed one reason for that, in fact, and I went to the trouble of buying it several years ago. Totally worth it. I have never wanted two separated characters to be able to touch each other as much as in this movie. I actually went and read the novel as well. It was fascinating to see what changes the did (and didn't) make. Good review, always glad when someone appreciates this wonderful film.
I'm so excited you watched this, it's so good. I would highly recommend charade, it has Cary Grant and Audrey Hepburn and is such a fun movie.
Hi Mia. The TV series was good! Hope Lang did a great job as Mrs Muir. Many episodes are on CZcams. I grew up watching them and know you will enjoy watching them too.
The color series "The Ghost & Mrs. Muir" ran on NBC-TV in 1968-1969 then on ABC-TV in 1969 -1970. It starred Hope Lange -- who won the Best Female Actor in a Comedy Series Emmy two years in a row, for her role as young widow and writer Carolyn Muir (which means sea in Gaelic), who rents Gull Cottage, near the fictional fishing village of Schooner Bay, Maine, in New England. Reta Shaw and Charles Nelson Reilly also starred. The cottage is haunted by the ghost of its former owner and 19th century sea captain Daniel Gregg, who had died in 1869, played by Edward Mulhare. It was a really wonderful television series.
I grew up about two miles from where this was filmed. It is Palos Verdes in the Los Angeles area. It is all homes now but it is still a beautiful place to grow up.
May we all leave this Life as Mrs Muir did.
OMG! My fave of all time along with 'The Man who laughs'🥰
If you've never seen it, then I Married a Witch is a superb supernatural comedy romance. It has the stunning Veronica Lake and some very good special effects given the time period. It was also the inspiration for the TV series Bewitched. Well worth a watch.
Another in the roster of movie/TVshows based on one of novelist Thorne Smith's spicy supernatural comedies (in this case "The Passionate Witch"), along with Topper, Turnabout, and Night Life of the Gods. The novel "Night Life of the Gods" used to send me into literal laughing fits, but one probably has to have an appreciation for Prohibition era humour.
I really loved this video. A new subscriber here! It’s such a wonderful, beautiful film. One of my favourites of all time and I just loved your reaction to it! ❤
I hope the Epic Scores series is going to include Ben Hur. Thanks for continuing to be refreshingly different with your film choices.
Or "El Cid" (1961), another epic film with both Charlton Heston and a memorable Miklós Rózsa score.
Thank you YT algorithm! It just randomly suggested this on the side and I immediately clicked. My mom showed me this movie when I was a kid and it's been one of my favorites ever since. It's not often for films of this time to show a woman with agency which is a big plus in my book. The fact that she doesn't take crap from anyone, not even a ghost haunting her new home, really butters my toast.
And, after seeing your reaction and thoughts, you've earned yourself a new sub. Cannot wait to see your other reactions!
Love your commentaries! Great job! It was a Awesome TV series.
As far as the TV series was concerned... the series ran from 1967 to 1969. It was very much a comedic and Americanized take on the situation, but still had a lot of heart. It fell into that genre of TV show that was popular at the time with examples like Bewitched and I Dream of Jeannie. Hope Lange plays Carolyn Muir, a widow with 2 kids, a son and a daughter. Reta Shaw plays Martha the housekeeper and Edward Mulhare (who was Rex Harrison's replacement in the original Broadway production of My Fair Lady) plays Captain Gregg. Charles Nelson Reilly plays Claymore Gregg, which is a very small role in the beginning of the movie but plays a much larger role in the TV series. It's set in the fictional town of Schooner Bay, Maine, but you can tell it was shot in southern California if you've ever seen the coast of southern California. It couldn't have been too bad, Hope Lange won 2 Emmy Awards for her portrayal.
There was a vogue for "supernatural romances" in the 1940s, maybe because of the great loss of young lives in the war. There was this, The Uninvited, Portrait of Jennie and The Enchanted, all excellent.
I just found your channel and, I absolutely love that you’re doing old movies. Thank you.
Wonderful movie. Wonderful, educated, intelligent review. Thankyou Mia ☺ ♥.
