I had not seen Gene Tierney in an interview before. She is wonderful! I'll bet she was fun to know. Good story teller....when she's not being interrupted.
Yes, the cold, icy glare she gives the young man( Darryl Hickman, I believe), as he drowns is a cinematic masterpiece! That scene alone assured her Best Actress nomination that year.
@@Weeeewriter She had two daughters. The first one, Daria, was born severely and multiply handicapped -- partially blind, deaf, and mentally challenged --as a result of Gene's exposure to rubella whilst pregnant with her. Her younger daughter, Christina, also ended tragically. Her father, fashion designer Oleg Cassini, had initially arranged for his substantial estate to be divided between his two daughters. But when he died it was discovered that he had changed his will and left his fortune to his "companion," who claimed she was secretly married to him. The case was still in litigation at the time of Christina Cassini's death, age 66, of ovarian cancer, from which she had suffered for several years, in 2015. As of last year the case had not been settled.
Loved Gene Tierney in Laura that movie is one of my favorites of all time. Very compelling and mysterious. I have watched it more than once. I get something me out of it every time. She is very charAsmatic and definitely lights up the screen.
It's funny, I'm watching Heaven Can Wait and this interview at the same time. It's so strange to look up from my computer and see Gene Tierney some 40 years younger on TV, then back to my computer, but I digress. You can see the labored breathing, and how her voice changed due to the emphysema which eventually took her life. A beautiful down to earth woman, who was still beautiful at this interview. Never smoke. It's slow suicide
One of my favourite actresses. Gene was so courageous to talk openly about her illness in 1979. You could see that Mike was in love with her as we all were.
So tired of all these comments that moan about our modern times. Was it really so much better to live in the 1940's? Well, back then you wouldn't even have Internet to write about it. Yes, you might consider the old days "classy" and they had some very charismatic faces ... but it was also an extremely racist, sexist, hypocrite, homophobic time. I'm a passionate fan of Gene Tierney and her generation but I also appreciate our modern cinema where at least sometimes a black person gets a major role and subjects like sexuality are not censored as something nasty and dirty. I think our generation also has many very charismatic and unique faces who are also fantastic actors - Michael Fassbender, Cara Delevingne, Natalie Dormer, Christoph Waltz etc.... How do they "all look alike"?! Btw, it's absolutely possible that Gene had some face lifting done, as it was practiced at that time and long before. Marlene Dietrich for example had several plastic surgeries.
Sandy Weinhold No offense, but none of those names will Be remembered 5 to 10 years down the road. Cara Delevingne is only a former model with a stunning face. No noticeable talent for acting so far. Like I said, no offense but no one today will ever be remembered as the great Golden Age of film with great writers , musicians, artists and directors are all now in the past, sadly. The new crop changes every year it seems .Its not their fault, no support system exists today to nurture any foreword motion of their “careers”.
@@marjoriemargel1567 True to an extent. Still, I just want to mention that every person's cheekbones become lower as they age (gradual volume loss and sagging of tissue). But, if you start out in early adulthood with very high cheekbones (like the lovely Gene Tierney), you can look forward to still looking good into your old age. :)
So many note how old she looks yet I still think she looked stunning even as an older woman. It's how she carried herself with confidence in this interview that made her age seem to not matter.
You are absolutely right. Her age and his interview doesn’t matter. My goodness just because she was 59 years old at the time doesn’t make her old. She’s a classic and I’ve always admired Gene Tierney for her acting and her perseverance let alone her beauty
amazing what beauty is. it also has to come from within and to be natural, and organic...i get so tired of the false breasts and overdone plastic surgery and all these distorted views and images of femaleness. thank u for this clip so much. she is beautiful and a breath of fresh air.
This is an amazing, real, down-to-earth, very talented woman. She was unique and special and no one else could compare to her style. She seems like a very nice person and must be appreciated for the years of suffering she endured and yet raised a family amidst all of that, to say nothing of working in Hollywood which, as she notes here, has broken more than one man or woman.

My favorite. I noticed she bought her pocketbook with her. I don't think they do that today. She was the most beautiful ever when she was young. She's still a beauty at this age.
Loved her in "Laura' (1944). Her voice was higher back then. She said she hated her voice so took up smoking to lower it. That was her demise. She was the perfect 1940's movie star. Classy and beautiful with just enough sex appeal. .
Nice to hear Gene Tierney just sit down and talk. She was so beautiful in Laura. I have her autograph that I purchased off eBay. It looks authentic. But it didn't come withe any authentication. Never the less I treasure it.
Wonderful! She was such a special lady, and I had no problem with Mike serenading her. It was very touching. Gene Tierney doesn't get the credit she deserves as an actress, in my opinion.
Hey nodgelyobo, you probably do not know anything about Gene Tierney as an actress or an individual. She had bouts with mental illness during her life and was institutionalized for a while. I wish people like you would learn to research and find out facts before they come to such rash conclusions. You are the one who is screwed up...
What does mental illness have to do with her acting ability? She was a talent and a great beauty. She also seemed from different accounts to have been very empathetic towards others.Likely due to the pain she suffered at the hands of her illness.Mental illness is common in Hollywood and some of the most talented suffer/suffered from it ...Patty Duke Astin, Robbin Williams,Vivien Lee and on and on.What a cruel and uncalled for comment you made.It sounds like you need a lesson in compassion.People can't help being mentally ill.
Brian Oyler You Are the one who is being unkind and rude here. Mom worked with Miss Tierney on the Ghost and Mrs.Muir with Rex Harrison. Miss Tierney had major struggles of course, but she deserves your respect for her great courage and as a wonderful actress.
annamal pete Goodness! This poor lady underwent many shock treatments That’s why her speech is slightly damaged.Watch the way her lips droop when she speaks. What a brave woman to speak so candidly about this.
My goodness! What a great beauty she still was! I love that she obviously had no work done...just a legendary beauty, the most beautiful I always thought...
It's amazing how frank and candid she is about her mental illness. Very rare for a star to be so open, but she was always very down to earth, and according to many a pleasure to work with. Thank You for uploading this video. It's a shame we don't have more interviews of her. The book is excellent, well worth a read if you want to know the real Gene.

Gene Tierney is wonderful and Mike Douglas, wow, just a class act. He was a great interviewer. He was a good listener and respectful to his guests. And so prepared.
A great actress-loved her in the Ghost and Mrs. Muir. To put out a candle of aging well--does anyone? We all grow old......and botox just makes it worst in the end. I think she was well looking and still carried on the class she created. A very beautiful woman with charisma and smarts. Do not see a lot of that today.......everyone has someone whispering in their ear on what to say. That simply states a forum of simplistic brain power today. Very demeaning for our times today. How devastating for the upcoming Hollywood Icons-or are they icons-really? Love the fact she dissected some of the facts of mental illness-she was a brave individual. Nice to know some of "Hollywoods Glamms" were real people like the rest of us.
Mike Strawn, I like how you say "simplistic brain power today"... I think about that when I'm watching some of the old movies because so many of them have such substance in them and I think of how many people don't get it... It worries me how dumbed down so much of society is today and worry about the public schools. Speaking of the education aspect, so many young people don't value it, talk over the teacher, disrupt the class in many ways-making it hard for teacher to teach and for kids to listen and learn, the ones that want to learn. I don't have the answers, but I have some ideas and I think of it a lot. I say this as an aide and a teacher in the classroom for the last 9 yrs. Clearly my soapbox because I have a lot of thoughts and worries regarding this topic. BUT, I agree GT was lovely as a younger and older person. Laura is a comforting movie to me because I love Dana Andrews and Vincent Price as well. I also loved The Ghost and Mrs. Muir.
I'm sorry joan crawford! Gene was robbed! Leave her to heaven was amazing! The drowning scene is worth the price alone. One of the greatest performances ever!

Gene Tierney was one of a kind. Talented , down to Earth , beautiful.. Her mental health probably triggered by being in show business ( which is brutal and draining.)... I knew her daughter Laura - we went to Laura's mother residence. I had no idea who her mother was. Imagine my surprise when Miss Tierney answered the door.. elegantly dressed. And so charming and gracious. The oilman Howard Lee was the father of Miss Tierney's daughters Kelly & Laura. Hanging out with Laura and meeting her Mom is one of my most treasured memories.. How she came out her mental health struggle is inspiring and uplifting..
You can tell Mike had such a special affection for Gene given their similar age, and his connection to the song. This was a really well done tribute like interview that he gave to her.
I always loved Mike Douglas' voice, so so natural. And I love it when he backs the mic away when he sings louder, you know his voice is legit, and no "condenser" mic for him. That must have been a thrill to meet her.
I could kiss you! Gracias for posting this clip and sharing it with all of us. Gene Tierney is such a tender actress and was so private. I am so pleased to see this tiny glimpse into her private, graceful self.

What a beautiful interview with the lovely and sincere Gene Tierney. And what a beautiful voice Mike Douglas had! Him singing LAURA as he sat next to her was transcendent. I miss those days of kindness and world class talent.
Theres something genuine and down to earth about the older generation Hollywood actors. They dont seem so full of themselves like they do today, I could totally see hanging out with her on a regular day.
Aww that was touching. "Laura" is one of my favorite movies. I had no idea Mike Douglas was a singer and he could sing too. Gene was beautiful, I think her, Rita, Yvonne, Lena, Dorothy, Carole, Ava, and Myrna were some of the most beautiful women from that era.
I agree, it takes nothing away from Gene's beauty. I've seen a few other actresses and actors who don't exactly have the perfect teeth, but I feel it almost adds to their character and looks. Actually, overly bright white perfectly straight teeth can look a bit startling sometimes on film.
Wonderful interview! She seemed like a lovely lady and very brave to speak about her illness in those days. Loved her in The Ghost and Mrs Muir. Gorgeous woman

@@pennypiper7382 she was perfect to me. Maybe the people taking care of her weren’t perfect.
Simple music can make you sing simple hug can make you feel better simple things can make you happy, i hope my simple Hello brings smile to your face,,,
The more I read about this woman and the more I see of her, the more I am astounded at how wonderful and down to earth was. A wonderful actress, the most underrated of that era. And so unbelievably beautiful! Gene Tierney was exceptional in every way. Thank you so much for uploading this - it's a treasure.
+MonroeSmile You nailed it ...
+HAPPYTHELEAF :D
+MonroeSmile you once ssid that you would put together another tribute to Gene, and I Admire your work to date when can we see something new from you for Gene
+HAPPYTHELEAF I'm afraidI don't make videos anymore. My laptop simply couldn't take it and I didn't really have the time. The last video I made was over a year ago, and that was a tribute to Gene. So now you'll find two tributes to her on my channel.
Hey! MonroeSmile, I love your videos s much because image and song are synchronies ! Love Lana and Rita
Wow always loved Gene Tierney & she still looks beautiful in this video. The Ghost & Mrs Muir was one of my much loved movies. One of the greatest love stories of all time ❤️❤️
My favorite film of hers, too.
With Natalie Wood!
What a beautiful lady! Even in middle age she still had great charm and warmth.❤️❤️❤️
Simple music can make you sing simple hug can make you feel better simple things can make you happy, i hope my simple Hello brings smile to your face,,,
“Even in middle age . . “ Say what?!
She was the most beautiful woman I have ever seen on screen. Loved her.
what a charming woman. she seems so comfortable in her skin.
I had not seen Gene Tierney in an interview before. She is wonderful! I'll bet she was fun to know. Good story teller....when she's not being interrupted.
Yes well said for heaven's sake stop interrupting..🤫🤐
that was so annoying! would have never happened with Dick Cavett
Mike Douglas was interrupting her, but I think he was just excited to have her as a guest.
I think she handled it well. It was a conversation.
I Believe his nerves definitely bent his professionalism, slightly...
Gene Tierney was beautiful and it was nice to see how down to earth she was. The tragic story is about her daughter.
Dave La Violette I loved her in the Ghost and Mrs.Muir!!!!
Dave La Violette "Leave Her to Heaven" was really something. I still remember how I felt when I saw her acting....Very emotional!
Yes, the cold, icy glare she gives the young man( Darryl Hickman, I believe), as he drowns is a cinematic masterpiece! That scene alone assured her Best Actress nomination that year.
What happened to her daughter?
Gene was something else! Her frankness about her life with mental health is refreshing. I could literally watch her films on loop
A lovely, lovely lady. A very special human being. A great star.
Loved Gene Tierney in Laura that movie is one of my favorites of all time. Very compelling and mysterious. I have watched it more than once. I get something me out of it every time. She is very charAsmatic and definitely lights up the screen.
My kids dad always told me that I look like Gene Tierney. I don’t think I could have received a better compliment! ♥️
💜
It's funny, I'm watching Heaven Can Wait and this interview at the same time. It's so strange to look up from my computer and see Gene Tierney some 40 years younger on TV, then back to my computer, but I digress. You can see the labored breathing, and how her voice changed due to the emphysema which eventually took her life. A beautiful down to earth woman, who was still beautiful at this interview. Never smoke. It's slow suicide
One of my favourite actresses. Gene was so courageous to talk openly about her illness in 1979. You could see that Mike was in love with her as we all were.
This is a class act.
A real lady in the best old fashioned sense. And look! No plastic surgery!
Totally agree! Everyone looks alike now, both men and women. No one unique any more, except for a few character actors.
Marlene Dietrich for example had several plastic surgeries.
akarpowicz Having high cheekbones keeps your face up! No need for surgery!
Sandy Weinhold No offense, but none of those names will
Be remembered 5 to 10 years down the road.
It's how she carried herself with confidence in this
interview that made her age seem to not matter.
her eyes were stunning and she seems like a good person as well as talented and gorgeous.
Beautiful!
She has great skin specially for a smoker
You are absolutely right. Her age and his interview doesn’t matter. My goodness just because she was 59 years old at the time doesn’t make her old. She’s a classic and I’ve always admired Gene Tierney for her acting and her perseverance let alone her beauty
@@michellebeckstrom6110Well noticed, well observed, well understood, well felt, top marks for well expressed!
amazing what beauty is. it also has to come from within and to be natural, and organic...i get so tired of the false breasts and overdone plastic surgery and all these distorted views and images of femaleness. thank u for this clip so much. she is beautiful and a breath of fresh air.
Not only an epic beauty but so down to earth as well.
Good for her for being so brave way back then
This is an amazing, real, down-to-earth, very talented woman. She was unique and special and no one else could compare to her style. She seems like a very nice person and must be appreciated for the years of suffering she endured and yet raised a family amidst all of that, to say nothing of working in Hollywood which, as she notes here, has broken more than one man or woman.
AMEN!!!!
There she is!, when she smiles !!!! Always enjoyed her acting, fascinating lady.
Simple music can make you sing simple hug can make you feel better simple things can make you happy, i hope my simple Hello brings smile to your face,,,
My favorite. I noticed she bought her pocketbook with her. I don't think they do that today. She was the most beautiful ever when she was young. She's still a beauty at this age.
Maybe she kept an inhaler in her purse
Loved her in "Laura' (1944). Her voice was higher back then. She said she hated her voice so took up smoking to lower it. That was her demise. She was the perfect 1940's movie star. Classy and beautiful with just enough sex appeal. .
JRFrancisco20088 amazing in Laura
Stunning in "Laura". She played an evil woman in "Leave her to Heaven". Great actress. That was a good movie too.
@jharmon64 Mine too. "Laura" was so good, so "noir". Can watch it again and again.
@@m.e.d.7997 Yes, I think those two were her best. They show her great acting range, playing such disparate characters. A great talent and beauty.
our demise is when we're born. if it wasn't that, it would be something else.
Love her even more after seeing this interview. So down to earth and open.
Muirmaiden I wonder if people know she had mental illness at age 34, she lived a horrendous life, she had 30 shock treatments.
Simple music can make you sing simple hug can make you feel better simple things can make you happy, i hope my simple Hello brings smile to your face,,,
The epitome of a beautiful actress..............the gold standard
Muir.
She’s one of Martin Scorsese’s favorite actresses. He never worked with her of course but he often says how underrated she is.
Gene Tierney was a beautiful woman inside and out.
I loved Gene Tierney in "The Razor's Edge". I highly recommend everybody to see this great Philosophical film.
It's an underrated classic.
Jimmy Plato Loved that one too; often overlooked!
I love that movie. Tyrone power was great in it too.
I dont understand why people say that she played a "conniving socialite". ???
Her reactions are on par with mine.!!
I'm sorry joan crawford! Gene was robbed! Leave her to heaven was amazing! The drowning scene is worth the price alone. One of the greatest performances ever!
Truly amazing spectacular and she was breath taking beyond belief
Amen
@@ChefsandrajmOh yes Gene Eliza Tierney is the greatest actress and beauty in the history of Hollywood.
She aged incredibly beautifully. While she was speaking her personality was so compelling that every once in a while the beauty of her youth would flash momentarily.
She looks much older then 58 because she was heavy smoker.
I agree. She’s still quite beautiful here. Her eyes just sparkle!

She was pretty and a great actress!
Laura, Leave Her to Heaven, The Ghost and Mrs. Muir...
what an amazing lady, I am so proud that this wonderful lady shared her struggles- she was ahead of her time!
Intelligent, charming, humble and beautiful. Gene Tierney is so wonderful in this interview. Mike is just fine, too. Love it when Gene puts her head down as Mike starts to sing LAURA. I kept thinking how lucky David Brenner was to be sitting there watching and listening to this great lady.
I really think that both Miichael Douglas and David Brenner were in awe of a very great lady in their presence. I believe she felt their admiration. RIP - ALL. ❤
Mike had a lovely lyric baritone voice, warm, smooth and expressive.
She was so extraordinary that she was able to make unforgettable films, and overcome tremendous challenges and endured and went on to write her autobiography and at roughly 60 yrs of age, do this interview with such clarity, natural charm, and a great sense of humor. She is The Real Deal. ❤
What a personable and kind lady! I would have thought she would be shy and aloof. Thanks so much for posting.
+Liza Waldman Loved her in Laura.

GENE TIERNEY - WAS SO BEAUTIFUL BACK YEARS AGO!
SHE WAS A VERY GOOD ACTRESS!
So candid she is with her life. Really shows she is down to earth and not embarrassed to talk about her past and personal issues. Wonderful interview.
My favorite actress of all time. I wish her life had been happier. She was so beautiful.
I always loved Mike Douglas' voice, so so natural. And I love it when he backs the mic away when he sings louder, you know his voice is legit, and no "condenser" mic for him. That must have been a thrill to meet her.
What a brave, beautiful woman. I love her movies even though I wasn't born when she made them. A very special lady.
I could kiss you! Gracias for posting this clip and sharing it with all of us. Gene Tierney is such a tender actress and was so private. I am so pleased to see this tiny glimpse into her private, graceful self.
Beautiful, beautiful woman, even in this interview.
I am so glad we have this priceless interview w/ such a Grade Lady of the Screen. She broke barriers for so many people w/ mental health issues .
As an actress, she shines in a class all by herself.
I'm so glad Mike Douglas sang "Laura."
I was surprised the Band didn't play it as she was being introduced.
And please, Merv Griffin. He deserves special mention for this too. He was one of the great TV Hosts of the 1970's. Without him we would have missed these experiences to watch & remember. He was a charming and remarkable man.
Poor lady - she suffered so much. Love her. RIP
How could she work as a saleslady in a department store and not even be noticed by people who could recognize her easily with that kind of beauty she possessed?
This is a fantastic priceless Gem of a find, Thanks for posting.
Elegant lady, and was beautifully spoken.
What an amazing, courageous and dignified lady!! I have always liked h 7er as an actress, never realized her strength and courage! This is so moving!!
The most adorable smile on the face of the earth! I had such a crush on her when I was young and still do! The most beautiful actress and woman of all time!!
Hurt and heartache behind an incredible gracious beauty ,.. she was not only such a memorable actress & warm human being , ... she (still) IS Hollywood.
Still beautiful and so down to earth. Her private life was very sad. But she was obviously a survivor. Lovely natural lady.
My grandmother, who I think looked like a movie star, told me Gene was her pick for most beautiful... and Gene’s brother was named Butch. That’s what my grandmother named my dad. Kind of cool. I miss my granny, and women like this.

What a beautiful interview with the lovely and sincere Gene Tierney. And what a beautiful voice Mike Douglas had! Him singing LAURA as he sat next to her was transcendent. I miss those days of kindness and world class talent.
Gene Tierney, the most beautiful actress ever!
She was a pearl. Smart, beautiful, magnetic, yet too frail for that nasty business. Hollywood burned her
So lovely and what a wonderful personality. This makes me love her even more.
A legend. Great actress. Lovely woman.
Theres something genuine and down to earth about the older generation Hollywood actors. They dont seem so full of themselves like they do today, I could totally see hanging out with her on a regular day.
The most underrated actresses of our time, such a lovely lady.
A beautiful lady , Laura loved that film
She has the most beautiful eyes! Such a great lady. Thanks for posting!
✌🏻🙂✌🏻
Aww that was touching. "Laura" is one of my favorite movies. I had no idea Mike Douglas was a singer and he could sing too. Gene was beautiful, I think her, Rita, Yvonne, Lena, Dorothy, Carole, Ava, and Myrna were some of the most beautiful women from that era.
+Taylor Downing How about Veronica Lake, Constance Moore???????????????
Erik Exner I really like Veronica too. Constance Moore was great too.
Bless you sweetie!! Love, Erik
Knew Constance Moore personally. She passed in 2005.
Erik Exner aww thank you and bless you as well.
So relieved that she never had her overbite fixed. It was and still is very fitting to this stunning woman.
I agree, it takes nothing away from Gene's beauty. I've seen a few other actresses and actors who don't exactly have the perfect teeth, but I feel it almost adds to their character and looks. Actually, overly bright white perfectly straight teeth can look a bit startling sometimes on film.
How wonderful to have listened to this. I truly enjoyed her talents and her presence on film.
Wonderful interview! She seemed like a lovely lady and very brave to speak about her illness in those days. Loved her in The Ghost and Mrs Muir. Gorgeous woman
No other actress has come out to beat gene for the most beautiful actress in Hollywood.
What a very candid discussion about mental illness by someone so famous who has suffered with it for many years. This subject is so often hidden and misunderstood, but should be openly discussed in an effort to dispel the fear and stigma which surround it.
