  • WW'nTip-of-Day #014: Changing Band Saw Blades
    My favorite, most depended upon power tool (besides the lathe) is my band saw. Owning one opens up more possibilities than any other power tool. But changing blades can be intimidating for the uninitiated. Today we change a band saw blade on a traditional iron C-style (Delta, Powermatic, Jet, Grizzly, Rockwell and others all made similar styles).

    I bought a second hand Electra Beckham 315/4 bandsaw last year & like it, except it has been a big learning curve. I have gone through many setups & it would work for a while before shedding its blade or breaking it and before then it did things like cut the bottom door handle, the top blade guide & wear the face off the bottom thrust bearing. In this model the blade runs against the side of the bearing, a little like a bicycle brake. After a while I adjusted the bottom wheel tracking which is possible on this machine. It ran better till it shed its blade & cut through the bottom tyre. I made a new tyre from a bicycle inner tube, it ran great, cut a lot of wood then again shed its blade. I struggled to find why, kept rotating then by chance saw the bottom wheel move & then with some gentle back & forth I got the bottom wheel off, to find the axle was worn out, both wheel bearings seized, the wheel rotating on groves it had cut in the axle. There is one supplier of parts, now called Metabo in the uk, so I ordered a new axle, it came, but is the wrong size & the supplier answered my email by saying mower serial numbers are under the seat! The saga goes on, but I am getting resigned to machining a new axle, probably what I should have done after finding the fault, but the new one was a lot cheaper than buying stock & using my time on what is a trouble to make as it needs a large metric 20 mm 1.5 mm pitch on it & my lathe is imperial, plus needs a new half nut installing for the threading. But hopefully in the by & by the bandsaw will serve me well.

    A good common sense explanation of how to change blades. Also, great advice on centering the gullets on the center of the crown. Many years ago after purchasing my first bandsaw, I had a heck of a time with the blades tracking all over the place. I read countless articles on blade tracking yada yada... it's ridiculous. Like you, I changed the blade position to the center of the crown and the problem disappeared. One would think the "experts" that teach this stuff would know this or realize it.

      Understood BUT wrong is still wrong. Many experts make excuses for blade drift but never address the problem like you did. Kudos to you.

    I would like a video explaining the difference in blades and uses for them. Like making tight curves, wider blades for say cutting logs for bowl blanks and what to look for in a metal cutting blade. Differences in the metal used in making blades

    • @wortheffort
      @wortheffort  Před 6 lety

      Metal is out of my realm. I only really use a 1/2 or 5/8 3tpi blade and a really fine one for scroll work. For me the bandsaw is a coarse cutting tool that gets a lot of work done fast.

    I have the same problem with my Delta 14" band saw. The height adjustment mechanism is lacking a tight enough tolerance, and even if you adjust the rollers properly, you need to watch where you clamp down the adjustment lever because you can be way off
    Great video as always!

    Great video and I really am enjoying the new format. Please keep it up.
    One question...would it be possible to use something like a little fishing scale to measure blade tension?

    • @wortheffort
      @wortheffort  Před 6 lety

      If you could figure out the poundage conversion I'd think so but spring tension is also how most of the scales on the saws work too.

    I like to flick it down, it usually impreses people if they aren't familiar with a bandssaw.

    With the gullet in the center, doesn't it tear up the wheel? I noticed your wheel had a lot of wear?

    • @wortheffort
      @wortheffort  Před 6 lety +1

      wforl not really. You were seeing compressed sawdust not tears and that wheels 7-8 years of daily use. The blade isn’t moving on the wheel.
