Traffic Counts:Procedures for Vehicle, Intersection, and Pedestrian Counts

The Bureau of Indian Affairs' NW Region and the Kalispel Tribe developed this training video and procedures to assist tribal planners and engineers in training for and collecting data about the transportation system usage.

INTERSECTION TRAFFIC COUNTS: I think its important to do at least 4 diff times of day AND to "only" count those cars entering or leaving (not both) the intersection BUT also to be sure to count from all 4 directions so count street A entering, + B entering, + C entering, + D entering.
For example SAXON & PROVIDENCE in Deltona, FL, 32725 is approximately 36,000 + on just saxon alone but since that "probably" is both directions u might have to divide by 2 to get just those entering the prov & sax intersection "from that direction" ; in other words u need counts from all four directions so you might want to think that just take the 36,000 and presume the other direction is same but really that is a fallacy as it could be less cars going the other directions usually depending on time of day.
IMHO the best low cost way is to go to intersection and count cars "ENTERING" intersection for 10 minutes from all 4 directions, multiply this number by 6 to get the hourly count from all 4 sides, then multiply that hourly number x 12 hours to get the daily count ; do this for 4 different times of day , add them together and divide by 4 to get the "average" daily "rough" count.
The best way but higher cost is the hose across the road only the Departure lanes of each of the 4 streets leaving the intersection (not both entering and leaving or you will get double count). * U can use a video that can be slow mo (ie old vhs tape works, then replay it in slo mo to be sure of what you are seeing since some cars will be fast on green light and others very slow when light is red). FYI: we got 32,000+ cars from 7am -7pm m-f at Saxon & Providence in Deltona, FL back in years circa 2000-2006, so it will be higher now which jives with the 36,000 + numbers from the remax traffic flow count on saxon alone (presuming that is both directions).
* the reason to use the departure lanes with hose counters is that the speed will be more consistently high enough to avoid false or non counts which may happen with cars going too fast or too slow; at departure after car starts across intersection either turning or straight thru the speed is more or less about 10-30 mph but when entering intersection the red light may be so slow that the hose miscounts?

If you have ever taken time to consider the traffic control at our fine national parks, it must leave you wondering... are they trying to mess it up, or is this really the best they can do. Surely the highest priced, politically chosen, outside consultants could come up with something better than the monkey scat we must suffer to visit and enjoy our national treasures.
I used to live in the res near adjacent to a national forest. There was a gate latch was broken. It was broken for years. They had to tie it off to keep it open. You couldn't imagine the red tape to try to get it fixed. Might have cost 100$ if they could have found the right form to give to the right person. Anyway, after years of nothing, one day the gate broke free and swung into to road where it met a young lady and killed her by impalement... they blamed it on excessive speed. i often wonder if the lawyers intend to mock the families they harm with their cruel irony.
