I cut up Paris' Bianchi | How to cut a stem at home. One piece bar upgrade

  • Paris got herself a one piece bar and stem for her Bianchi Aria so i swap out her old bars and cut her stem down a little to make the whole thing look a little better. Let us know what you think of the new bars and whether youd give the stem cutting guide hack a go.
We then head out for a cycle in 40 mph winds just to make sure ive done everything correctly.
There's some great tips in here for anyone who might want the confidence to cut their own stem down or to swap out their own bar and stem for a one piece.

Every bike I build I always end up having to cut the stem to take out the last spacer after having ridden it to confirm the position. Always a pain when the brake lines are in the bike. I just take a few older shower towels wrap around frame and bars as its all a dangling mess, lay it all on its side on some couch cushion and then cut it with the fork still in the frame. Ive heard of some people using a "pipe cutter" tool that pushes a disc (like a pizza cutter) into it and you spin it around but never tried that approach. One thing to mention to viewers is when going to a narrower bar setup you will effectively "shorten" your stem length or total combined bar reach by a small amount, perhaps half a size.

Don’t use a pipe cutter 😅this only works with aluminium, but not carbon. Cheers

Good tip about the spacers, I need to cut my steerer tube I was going to use just an old stem first. You definitely need to find some better looking spacers under that new cockpit.

I’ve done exactly this, on an aria too, cut it in the frame using 2 hose clamps as a guide

Ha not taking it out the frame is genius. Plus points for that

To be fair only 2 beeps in a 20 minute video is pretty good going 😂

It’s far more easy to speak to a camera, it doesn’t talk back to you and it doesn’t complain as much 😜

The spacers below the bars are making the reach shorter... when you slam it you make the reach longer !!. Also many headsets require one spacer between the bars and the headset so totally slamming the bars may not be a good idea anyway. Did you use a bit of grip paste on the bung? Either way, check for any headset rock after a week or so, you may need to add either paste or a little more compression on the cap. Remember to slacken the bar screws first. Nice bars though!

It just needs a good clean. The Aria is a great looking frame, a little bit of TLC before the summer will do it a world of good

That's not "the stem" you're cutting, it's the steerer tube. The "stem" fixes the handlebars to the steerer.
If you're going to make jokes about "not knowing how to buy bikes" you might want to know the difference.
If this was intended to be a "how not to" video, you nailed it.
Ps. Nice way to ruin two stems by the way.

May just a little advise in favour of your health 😅 carbon dust is highly dangerous for your lungs and remains there when inhaled (risk of cancer) - using a water spray or wet towel to clean is recommended 🙌🏽 cheers mate

This is true. We had masks on to cut it and used a damp tissue to clean it off. But good advisory warning thank you

The whole point of a 1 piece bar and stem is so you hide the cables.

    • @thewattlife
      @thewattlife  Před 2 měsíci

We’re making this wireless in a few weeks so it will be cleaner- but on some older model frames you simply can’t completely hide the hydraulic cables

Paris is sponsored by Bianchi so she has an Oltre as well, which is completely integrated and Di2.
Her Aria is her own older model that we’re upgrading.
      She’s a lucky gal
