Until very very recently the only time you had to worry about a tornado in a city is if it was a huge powerful tornado. Now tornados of all sizes seem to be able survive City streets, concrete, & buildings.
Yeah for most of my life I would have bet you $100 that a tornado couldn't survive a city due to the buildings breaking up the wind currents. And I would have lost that bet. Because I was in Atlanta when we had one tear right through downtown in 2008. Although this was officially only called a "storm" for many years it has been officially recognized as an EF2. And I can tell you because I saw the destruction firsthand that it definitely had gusts far in excess of 130mph. Saw a steel street sign as big around as my leg bent over like a drinking straw. And based on the size, location, nature of the damage, etc that had to have been one hell of a gust.
That is because they are not caused by "sideways wind" they are a combination of three vortexes, and inner, positive column, and outer negative sheathe around that one and a debris column made of wind... This is called a "charged sheathe vortex" and it is an electrical discharge between the ground and the charged storm above.
the 1966 Topeka Ks. tornado . the major damage path started near Kansas Wesleyan University, damaging several buildings on campus, the storm continued trough an area of light industrial and office buildings . the twister then struck the capitol building damaging the bronze dome and other parts of the building, the tornado then moved through the downtown retail area. after crossing I-70 the tornado flattened an older wealthy neighborhood before moving through the east side of town. 17 people died ! prior to that storm, experts and residents were certain that the large hills west of town would protect the city .....

That's so funny because I was like, umm, yesterday we had a decently severe thunderstorm, but then again, I'm about 2-3hrs away from Chicago. Unless that's the slowest moving storm in history I don't think this was from 2hrs ago!? 😜🤣🤣

There was a particular cloud formation that was pure insanity to look at one day when we were outside doing marching drills. All the recruits kept looking up then getting frightened, and the arpoc (the drill instructor) said "Platoon, HALT! Look UP!" His idea was, if the recruits are frightened of that cloud formation, the best thing to do is force them to confront the fear. Midwest weather can get pretty crazy.
It gets very calm before a tornado comes down. 'Calm before the storm'! That is what happen during the 3 I have personally seen. When you sand outside looking up at the sky while the sirens are blaring and the guy on the radio is telling folks to take cover lol
A tornado is a funnel of wind...comes at you but bounces around. People walking outside may not be listening to the weather report. Hopefully warning sirens.

It was Forth Worth Texas that pretty much showed the world that tornadoes don't care about your pretty tall buildings. That downtown got slapped hard.
