I read “Anna Karenina” for the first time two years ago at the tender age of 58. It is number two in my favorite books of all time. It is behind “Jane Eyre” and before “Pride and Prejudice.” The remaining two in the top five: “Far From the Maddening Crowd” and “To Kill a Mockingbird.”

That's a nice list right there. I've yet to read Far from the Madding Crowd, but the others I've read and will undoubtedly reread. I just got a lovely copy of Jane Eyre and I'm itching to read it.

Yes! When watching a comparison on different translations (Benjamin McEvoy) the Rosamund Bartlett was my favourite. I have the Oxford paperback version. Can’t wait to read it😊

Benjamin's great, isn't he? I'm a member of his HCL and love his content so much.

I wasn't very convinced by Anna Karenina as a character - people often say Tolstoy captured the feelings of a woman so well in this novel, but to me she remained rather flat. I did love the book as a whole, though. Very lively with some boring parts, if I remember well. I wouldn't mind reading it again.

Interesting. I haven’t read it since my university days in the 90s. I tried three years ago and quit. It was the Constance Garnett translation and I just got bored. I’m keen to have a slow read and really take it in. I just have trouble with some of the themes.

@@CamsCampbellReads I read a very modern (and perhaps rather free/anachronistic) Dutch translation, and I must say on the whole it was quite a fast read (apart from the number of pages). There were some boring parts as well and I'm not very interested in Christian faith and all that. But that's part of the deal I suppose.

Huh. I thought that Oxford Classics always used the great Louis and Alymer Maude translation.

It seems to vary. I have two OWC copies of Crime and Punishment by different translators.

Hi! I love your videos but as a viewer may I have a suggestion? The piano is a nice background but it's too loud. It's on the same level as your voice which makes it hard to hear you and the overall sound is a bit chaotic. If you could lower the music level I would be very grateful :). Sorry for this comment but it's been bothering me for past few videos and I want to keep watching your content as I love literature and I think you add something different to the already existing booktube community.

Noted! Thank you for this helpful feedback and for not just unsubscribing. The book community really is a shining example of how good CZcams can be. 🙏🏻
