Thank you. Exactly what I said. He’s not a kid because 1. He wasn’t charged as a minor but an ADULT. 2. You cannot sentence a child to death unless it’s under certain circumstances. 3. He’s been out of HS for at least 2-3 years and those two girls were only 9th and 10th graders. If he’d been successful in his “endeavors” he could get jailed for statutory grape. None of those are likely to happen to an actual kid because their trial would be held in juvenile court unless under certain circumstances.

The boy with long hair is not part of this trial, his name is Jacob Matt Morgan. He was an autistic teen who accidentally started a fire in his home and panicked when it got out of control, he realized he forgot his 14 month old brother in the house and ran back to try and save him but neighbors refused to let him back in. Unlike the man in this story, Jacob showed nothing but pain and anguish for what happened while in court. I blame his parents, they knew he was autistic, they knew he liked to burn things, and they left him home alone with his little brother. I have a brother who's autistic, and from the information I've gathered by observing his behavior, depending how high on the spectrum you are, you process things in a different way that most people do, you don't understand consequences until it's too late and sadly in this case it was too late. There's also some people saying that Jacob was intimidated and manipulated to incriminate himself.

Many of the details here are wrong, but the real story is even more bizarre. Paul Powell was a proud racist, and in 1999 he murdered the 16-year old because he found out she had a black boyfriend, and s-assaulted her 14-year old sister. The trial was in 2000, and he was found guilty of the murder (and got the death penalty) and the s assault of the 14-year old (he got 3 life sentences). But because the prosecution didn't meet Virginia's burden for the death penalty, the conviction was vacated by VA's supreme court. In VA, you can only get the death penalty for murder if there are aggravating circumstances (like s assault, robbery, etc).
He wrote the letter to the prosecutor in 2001, taunting them for their failure, calling them names and profanity, but detailing the crime with information that the prosecution didn't know...only the killer did. Powell thought he was safe because of double jeopardy. But since there was new evidence (from the letter) and the verdict vacated, they were able to get a second trial in 2003. Because he admitted he tried to s assault her but killed her when she resisted, they had the aggravating circumstance, and he was found guilty and given the death penalty.
He was executed in 2010. He refused lethal injection, and so was executed using the electric chair. I wouldn't exactly call 11 years 'instant karma', but he did snatch defeat from the jaws of victory, and got what he deserved.

As opposed to just metaphorically? I'm trying to understand the requirement for "literally". Was it used as just an additional word to bulk out an otherwise unremarkable sentence, or does it serve another definite purpose? I've noticed that many from the USA are copying each other by using "literally" in places it's not required, and serves to either erroneously alter the meaning of a sentence, or seemingly just to lengthen a sentence.

    • @shaderunner7.0

It's not just a US thing, even in my language you can say you "literally did a thing", whatever that thing may be. It also carries the notion of disbelief and astoundment over the action. Like in this sentence it could be interpreted as "I can't believe the killer was as stupid as this knowing that his words could be used to criminate him".

I hate that I have to even say this but if It can help one person, so be it. If you ever find yourself in a similar situation with a person that will not leave you alone, act like you love them tell them you will date them do whatever you have to say and do to ensure your safety. Yes it's hard but it could save your life and others. Just play the part and tell them what they want to hear in that moment. Also learning self defense could be helpful. Stay safe everyone 😔💙

He withheld testimony on top of that, that's why there was another trial, he was sentenced to the electric chair and and after 10 years of failed appeals, electrified.
