I am a huge Alessia Cara fan and it was this song that introduced me to The Warning! Heard Alessia talking during and interview and talked about this collaboration and once I heard it I became addicted to The Warning. Thank you for your reaction I loved it.

We are the opposite. The Warning introduced me to Alessia Cara. I heard this cover for a long time until one day I said "let me check out this Alessia girl" I listen to the hard rock/metal mostly so I don't follow the other genres. But I ended up liking some of alessias songs. 😂

Alessia Cara is a Grammy award winning Canadian pop singer of Italian origin who has appeared multiple times on the Tonight show. Alessia and TW only appeared once together live at the Troubadour in LA in May 2022. The video was shot in an abandoned textile mill south of Monterrey, Mexico. Alessia appeared as a projection due to the pandemic. The song was arranged and recorded in one week in March 2021 and the video was shot in September 2021.

Fun fact that will blow your mind!!!: They did not meet in person until 8 months after the song was released due to COVID restrictions. They recorded their parts separately and notice that Alessia is not at the video location, the projection worked out well but it was a necessity.
The only time they have performed together live was May 24, 2022 at the Troubadour on Sunset. I was there and it was magical.

Because of Covid travel restrictions Alessia was unable to actually be with The Warning. So this projection of her was genius.. Those harmonies are stellar..This is the best cover of this song ever. (my opinion)🤘✌️🎶

I'd go as far as to say it is a complete rearrangement of the song. It's on the Black List album, and Metallica loved it. It was the only version that was a complete change-up, which was Metallica's instruction. They didn't really want straight covers. Alessia and The Warning delivered.

  • @krash66
    @krash66 Před 24 dny +10

Hey Guys! Yes, Metallica approached Alessia Cara about doing a song for the Blacklist album. BTW: the Blacklist was for the 30th anniversary of the Black Album, and is 53 artists of many genres asked by Metallica to their version of their favorite song on the album. The instructions from Metallica were, "Turn it upside down, inside out and make it your own, just don't change the lyrics." So, Alessia being a Pop singer was a bit freaked out about doing a cover of a song from such an Iconic band in a genre shed never attempted. Alessia and The Warning share the same international manager, Chris Smith, owner of 21 Entertainment in Toronto. He suggested she collaborate with The Warning, and got the approval of Metallica. But, the Pandemic was on and they had 8 days to make the publishing deadline. So, producer Matt Squire, flew to Monterrey and worked with The Warning and they worked with and recorded Alessia via Zoom in Canada. As they described the process, they stripped the song to it's roots, then rewrote it as a pop song. Then they Rockified or "Warnified it"! LOL. When they play it live, Dany sings all the lead parts and some of Alessia's backing vocals can be heard throughout on the their backing tracks.
As with any genre, there are gatekeepers, Purists, whatever you want to call them. But, I have read MANY more comments on this song from Metallica fans that are positive than negative. Honestly, many of them said they are sick of the original because it became so overplayed, and they love the new twist! Count me in that camp.
Fun Fact: This song is the first track on the Black List. It may be because Metallica liked it so much. But, more likely it was alphabetical order and Alessia comes first. LOL

I think the ladies captured the spirit of the lyrics MUCH better than the original. Their version "breathes." It takes you on a roller coaster ride of creepiness before blowing your head off.

    • @MTH58
      @MTH58 Před 24 dny +2

Yup. The songs in the Blacklist Album are in the same order as the original Black Album. For each song, there are 5 or 6 cover versions, and they are in Alphabetical order by the Artist’s first name ( or Band name) as appropriate. Had TW been credited first on the song, they would have been song 5 of 6, “Weezer” coming last.

Blacklist is the 30th anniversary of the Metallica black album. The live version of this from Teatro Metropolitan CDMX did include some of Alessi's vocals on backing track, but with Dany singing most of them. The straight cover was in their home studio, at ages 14 12 and 9.
Video was filmed during quarantine, with Alessia recording in Canada, and TW in Mexico at I think , an abandoned factory in Monterrey. They had 10 days to submit it, 7 days of recording time.
I'm a Metallica fan, seen them on multiple tours, and the live reimagined TW version is personally my favorite.

My The Warning journey was that I saw the original Enter Sandman cover video in 2014/15. I showed my wife and friends that video of three little girls playing hard rock. Later, I think I saw the TED Talk video that included Survive. Then in early 2022, I saw this video! I showed my wife, asking her if she remembered that video of the three little girls playing Enter Sandman. She remembered it and I reminded her of the little bass player who could barely hold her instrument. I started this video for her and when the girls walked out in the beginning, I said "That is the little bass player!" I have been following them ever since. Of the three versions of Enter Sandman (1. Original Cover, 2. Blacklist arrangement collab with Alessia Cara, 3. The Warning live version of Blacklist arrangement) I like the live version best and added an mp3 of the Teatro Metropolitan version to my Spotify playlist. I hope they include it on a future live album.

There are at least two other times they did the song the original way. One was live, but without any audience like the famous viral version. And then there's one that the Warning did live in front of an audience and that was their first show in front of strangers and that predates the viral versions that made them famous.

When it started, you were shocked and horrified! LOL That has happened to several reactors who didn't know about the Blacklist Album and what Metallica had said about changing their songs as much as possible as long as the lyrics stayed the same. Glad you like it now.

    re: reimagined *Enter Sandman* :
DPA/TW and Alessia Cara certainly understood the assignment!
Alessia Cara is a Grammy winning Canadian Pop and R&B singer... they had 10 days to rip this rendition of *Enter Sandman* from the ether and make it a darker, more eerie, and a more haunting lullaby than the original metal version... they made the deadline and got this OMV for it to boot!
this reimagining and performance were done because they, and many other artists from numerous genres, were invited by Metallica to take one of the songs from the original _"Black"_ album, keep the lyrics and change it up how ever you like... play it backwards, upside down, whatever... this was all for the 30th anniversary of the _"Black"_ album... all the submissions from 50someodd artists were put on the 2021 _"The Metallica Blacklist"_ album... the proceeds from the album sales are split 50/50 with half going to Metallica's "All Within My Hands Foundation" and the other half being donated to a charity of the participating artists' choice.
in the OMV, Dany (guitar) and Alessia share the lead vocals until they are in the three doorways when Dany takes over and Alessia does more of the background oooohs and aaaahs... the version they play in concert has Dany doing the vocals with a backing track of Alessia's ohhhs and ahhhs... of course Ale (bass) and Pau (drums) join in with their angelic harmonies in both... this is a fantastic reimagining of the iconic original... this 60+ year old rocker loves both versions of Enter Sandman but this one by TW and Alessia gets more airtime these days 😹

Happy Warning Wednesday! The first time I heard this it sent shivers down my spine. Pau doing the prayer is surreal and the harmonies are beautiful. Metallica wanted their songs remade and redone with only the lyrics left intact, Alessia Cara and The Warning understood the assignment. Most of the metalheads I know understand what Metallica wanted and love this version. Another great reaction.

I loved this rearrangement of ES from the day it came out and I've been a metal head since the first Black Sabbath album and a Metallica fan.
I like the studio recording over the live because all the little nuances in the song can be heard. The three part ascending harmony that replaced the guitar solo is gorgeous. Alessia's breathy, soft voice is a nice contrast to Dany's rock voice. I also like Alessia's little accents at the end of her vocal phrases. I like the build ups and then the drop it into half-time.
FYI: Alessia was invited to record a song for the Blacklist album but she didn't even know a single song from the Black album. So, Chris Smith of 21 Entertainment Group in Toronto suggested the collab with TW. Alessia and TW are signed with Chris Smith as their International Booking Agent. Alessia liked the idea and so did Metallica.
Matt Squire was the producer for the song. He arrived in Monterrey, MX to work with TW while Alessia was in Canada. This was in 2021 during Covid so there were still travel restrictions. When it came time for Alessia to record her vocals, Matt took control of her computer from the recording studio in Monterrey.
After recording the song they sent the demo to David Bendeth in New Jersey, who was the producer for TW "Error" album in 2020. Matt Squire had a prior commitment, so he didn't have time to mix the song.
They had 10 days to arrange, record, mix, and submit their song to the Metallica team.
Fun Facts about the video. Where Pau was standing next to the building there were large bugs crawling up the wall next to her and she is a bugaphobe and couldn't wait to get away from there.
The room where they finished song smelled like old, wet dog hair because of the stagnant water that had accumulated there over the years and was made worse because they watered down the floor for the video.

Dany, with her gravel voice, does the prayer with more menace and grit... it changes things just a touch and gives the song a new 2nd soul 😹

I remember watching this for the first time. A snippet had slipped out from a game trailer. A pro sports broadcast featured the same snippet as bumper music. Anticipation for the release was HUGE. When I first watched this I was sitting at my desk, at work, eating lunch. I put on my air pods, sat back, and was left speechless. Thinking back, Choke and Evolve had only recently been released, to tease their upcoming Error album, and it was clear that DPA had grown up. Those two songs just amped up the anticipation and excitement. Then, this dropped.
To say I got emotional watching this video is a massive understatement. Think about this arrangement. How do you mesh the styles of TW and AC? How do you do that in a week? Think about the timing, coming out of the pandemic and the anticipation for the release of their album. EVERYTHING related to that launch could have been immediately destroyed by a bad cover release for the Blacklist album. Instead, these incredible artists created a MASTERPIECE. It is, by far, the BEST cover on the Blacklist album and has nearly 4 million views.
Quite a massive accomplishment... just shy of 4 million views on CZcams.

This is a very different rendition of ES from the one at Teatro Metropolitan live, 08/22/2022. This OMV is creepier, but the live version is much harder, more evil, and darker. Pau's prayer character is Wednesday Addams from the Addams Family TV series. Dany's prayer in the live version is downright demonic, from the vocals, to the guitar riffs, to the red lights. The ending is far more dramatic there, with the ridiculously flashy light show. Alessia is more prominent here, but still haunts the live version as a backing track. I love the way they solved their "pandemic problem" by using the projection on the walls of the mill. She performed it live with them once at the Troubadour, bouncing around the stage like a pop star. That is my least favorite take of the song, but I'm glad they got to meet and do it.

I’ll admit I was a semi-gatekeeper concerning this song, at first.
To be fair, this was probably the 3rd song I’d heard from The Warning and I wasn’t up to speed on the bands history or the premise of how this collaboration came to be.
Now I consider myself a full blown member of TWA, have seen them and this song performed live and absolutely adore both the live version and the OMV.
I may even prefer the OMV a bit more because Pau does the lullaby and because the drop into the iconic riff at the end is more dramatic.
The whole song is heavier live and Dany absolutely channels James perfectly and Pau is outstanding as a backing vocalist in addition to the group harmonies.
Pau and Ale did the lullaby in the 2014 straight cover, Pau does it in the OMV and Dany does it live, versatility i’d say.
Metallica didn’t want straight covers for the Blacklist album.

It was polarizing back in 2021, but since the live performances it grew on many of us, and I believe the majority of TWA love TW version of Enter Sandman, especially the lives! The live version of 2022 Teatro Metropolitan is the definitive version. Alessia Cara was originally dissed until the detail of the story of the collab was better known, and she gained the respect of TWA. When Alessia Cara appeared with The Warning on the second night at the Troubadour in West Hollywood, she received an astonishing and resounding applause and cheers!

There are some significant differences between this and the live version at Teatro Metropolitan besides the absence of Alessia. Some of the harmonies are dropped and Dany does the prayer instead of Pau. Basically the live is all Dany on vocals (with Alessia on a backing track and some backing vocals from Pau and Aly)..

Finally some appreciation for the original studio version!!! I like the Theatro Metropolitan live performance, but I PREFER this version. So much of TWA will outright ignore this studio version in favor of the live one when recommending it to reactors. I love that it contrasts the original Enter Sandman more with Alessia's vocals, but TWA will, by and large, say it it 100% better WITHOUT Alessia's contribution. THIS version was my gateway to The Warning when I heard it used on a video game trailer for Marvel's Midnight Sons. As a fan of Metallica, I just HAD to find out who was singing such a kick-ass cover. Tumbled into the rabbit hole and never looked back.

I say this in most of my comments to this new version--I have to admit, I am not a Metallica fan, and I was sick of this song, until this version came along. A lullaby where Alessia very sweetly puts you to bed, then Dany rouses the troops, Pau shares a creepy little prayer, the angel chorus comes to sing you to sleep, then Boom, the hammer drops. I think of this very much as the female version of the Sandman tale told as a dark lullaby. Who knew that we needed the tale told in half-time. So good. Delicate, powerful, soothing, strong, gentle, fierce-all at the same time. I love this one.
A number of us in The Warning Army have dug pretty hard through the archives and believe that the genesis of this collab is -- Metallica invited Alessia Cara to participate in the Blacklist 30th Anniversary album during COVID. The international management agency that represents both Alessia and The Warning asked Metallica if the two groups could be brought together for this project. The two groups wrote (Alessia in Canada, The Warning in Mexico), recorded, and produced this entirely new version of Sandman in only ten days that ended up being the lead track on Metallica’s anniversary album.

“Everyone” likes this better than the original. If for no other reason than, as you say, it’s fresh & it’s not just a re-hash of the original. Other than the words, they changed … everything. As Metallica instructed. This is my favorite version of The Warning versions. (Until we get an official video from Pepsi Center with the strings accompaniment anyway😉)

This is easily my favorite version of Enter Sandman. The way it starts off ethereally with Alessia's vocals, then gets a bit darker with Dany's vocals. The haunting prayer. There is some back and forth between the ethereal and the darkness during the harmonizing, then it crashes into the original riff. The arrangement is amazing. It is the same lyrics, but it has a completely different feel from the original.
There are metal fans who don't like it because it isn't the original.
There are The Warning fans who don't like it because "The Warning doesn't need Alessia Cara."
The Warning and Alessia Cara are not going to be some new supergroup, this was a one time collaboration. Both The Warning, and Alessia Cara have their own, impressive, and still growing, bodies of work. This version of Enter Sandman will just be a footnote in their histories, it will not make or break their careers, but what a footnote it will be.
While I like their live version of Enter Sandman, and would prefer it to Metallica's, if I go to see them live in concert I would rather hear them do any of their originals, and I do mean any, even going back to their Escape The Mind EP, than hear them cover Enter Sandman.

I don't really understand why fans of the original would dislike this, or even call it pop... if this is pop, then Pantera is country 😆There's nothing "poppy" about it imho, except for Alessia's presence. When Justin Bieber, Britney Spears, Rihanna and Beyonce start to use heavy electric guitar, heavy bass and PUH-PAU drums in their songs, you can dress me up in pink and call me Barbie 😂This song is not your ordinary, dull pop song you've heard on the radio a gazillion times, this is something else, it's heavy, atmospheric, a bit eerie, and very well written and executed. Maybe not metal, but definitely not pop either. The line between metal and hard rock is kinda blurry anyway, in some rock songs you can hear metal influences, and vice versa. If I understand it correctly some fans of old Metallica and Megadeth don't like the black album, Load, Reload, Risk, Cryptic Writings or Youthanasia for example, because they think they are too "main stream" and not thrashy enough. Still bloody good metal albums if you ask me. Nothing wrong with experimenting with your sound and style as a band, if the end result is as good as those albums.

Haha. Hey, I’m not worried about showing my age. I’m happy with where I’m at. lol. But yeah, it’s a very personal thing…what version is “better”. Live versions have more personality and energy of course…but as an artist, composer, and engineer…I really enjoy hearing studio recordings. There’s a lot of care taken when making things like this, that don’t always translate in “live” scenarios. So for me, there’s a place for both, but audibly, I liked this version best.

Not an audio engineer, here, so not sure what in the Teatro Metropolitan performance might have thrown Jeremy off, but I for one like both versions for slightly different reasons. I like this one because it's very well performed and produced (to my untrained eyes and ears), and of course features Alessia's important contribution. But I like the live version as well because we get to witness The Warning's fantastic ability to play live. There were a couple changes made to the live version to make the performance work, but it wasn't a distraction for me.

This was my gateway video to The Warning, how I got Warned! I'm in the minority that likes the OMV better than the live/Teatro version - but I like it better because it is more of a creepy lullaby & has Alessia more prominent versus the hard rock version that is the live version. My impression of the metal/rock fan base is that most (60%+) like this remake better, and a lot of it is because we are all sick to death of the original which has been overplayed to annihilation -- for example, during every commercial break for basketball, baseball, and football games at the venues, for years and years.
