  • One of the largest military live firing range for vehicles and aircrafts is located on the East Coast called Fort. Indiantown Gap. As a civilian I can drive between ranges while practicing. It houses one of the largest live firing ranges for A-10 Warthogs, and by driving up to "Hawk Watch" you can watch as A-10's do combat patterns just 1000' above your head, and swoop in for gun runs just half a mile away from you.
On this particular day, we where notified that citizens may occur loud noises throughout the day due to artillery training. We decided to drive up and see how loud it really is in real life. Lucky enough, they have multiple howitzers positions in the mountains shooting over certain roads in the range accessible to civilians.
The sound in real life is nothing you'd ever imagine - the thud in your chest and the ringing in your ears. Then to hear the round whistle overhead and echo down the valley destine for a target is magical and terrifying all at once. An adrenalin rush like never before.
