- Since our 2019 video got so much love, this week we figured we would revisit this topic and expand on it.
(It definitely isn't because I, Kayla, think that the 2019 UTC video may be one of the worst video I've ever filmed and edited and feel the need to put out a better edited, in focus, no light switches in the background version lol.)
So, here we go with an in-depth look at the universal timezone called UTC or Z-time!

Thank you for this! I'm always confused at what the time difference is and stuff lol. By the way i am new to your channel I just subbed yesterday or the day before lol
Glad this video was helpful! And welcome to the MeteoTechWx fam :)
Trying to learn this at 3AM is probably not a good idea. lol
Amature Radio operators broadcasting on Hf use UT time also
I got the ones with the chart rather than the map 😂 I definitely missed the map ones. Got a better idea of it in the end
How is UTC affected when we spring forward and fall back? We have 2 completely different time zones for each cycle.
Good question! UTC always stays the same. There’s no daylight savings time for UTC. However, our time behind UTC changes. For example here on the East Coast our current EDT time is “UTC -4”, but when we fall back an hour EST will be “UTC -5” because we’re one more hour behind.
Does z time change with going on and off of daylight savings time? If that makes sense? Can you share with me the time difference between central time zone (which is 1 hr behind eastern time) and z time? Because I'm ALWAYS so confused at the time difference when I'm looking at the weather models etc
Right now it’s subtract 6 from Zulu time to get military time then you just convert from there
@@Aaron-yo2oq thank you!
Can you explain to me why the east is a day ahead please?
Given the UTC is zero, the sun (for us on earth) goes East to West so, form the Sun’s perspective looking at Earth with North on top the globe is spinning from left to right. This means that as rotation progresses we hit Atlantic Ocean, Greenland, East Canada, NYC, towards LAX and so on. But THEN, Asia is already a day ahead. They hit January first BEFORE UTC.
That’s what confuses me. I’m not being an ass it’s legit me not understanding how we start from zero at UTC Greenwich progressing toward the West yet any location ahead of UTC is a day prior on the calandar.
Help? Lo!
Good question! The Prime Meridian line at Greenwich was decided to be the “zero” time for the world way back when. To the West of the GMT/UTC line the time is UTC minus 1 through UTC -12. To the East is UTC +1 through +12. Asia hits January before that zero UTC line because they are (for example) UTC +8 or eight hours ahead of Greenwich England. The 0 UTC line isn’t where the day “starts”, it is the middle. Hope that helps!
@@MeteoTechWx yes thank you!
