This week on the home renovation front we get our three design plans back from the architects.
These plans are different layouts for this old abandoned house, for the structure, for the outbuildings and for the extension designs.
Living in the woods we want lots of outdoor space and by bringing in architects they will make the most of that for us. We’re VERY excited to show you them!
We also need a little help deciding on which one is best or if a mixture of them all is the way to go!
In the meantime we’re still working on excavating the land that will create a car park eventually
.
Renovation on the house is still underway but right now it’s all the boring bits! We still need to demolish some of the inside walls in the cottage.
This home make over seems to take a lot longer when we’re on our own! Haha can’t wait to show you the before and after of the land space! She’s a beauty…

I like option 1 because it seems to be leaving the original cottage visible as much as possible
I agree
I second that! @@Remoskateer
Same vote here #1
Option 1 I’d choose.
I vote option 1 as well
Option 3. You will never regret having a bathroom downstairs. And the dual aspect fireplace looks amazing.
Maybe in option 1 they could fit a toilet in the utility room?
I agree I like option one but a bathroom downstairs is better
Totally agree. Option 1 is better than 2 because some will like the aesthetic of an L shaped home. But it doesn't take advantage of the external or internal spaces. Just not as nice to actually live in I think. Option 3 is significantly better IMO, really nice. The simple elongation of the OG property means you create less dark damp corners (I know its been sunny but it is Scotland we live in, lol) and perfectly separates outdoor spaces to 1: The Entrance Patio, 2: Front Entertaining Patio + Views and 3: Private rear Lawn. So good to have that variance of outdoor space close to the home. Aesthetically the change in materials is your visual separation old/new and the timber finish: preferably Scottish Larch can be light grey or a slight pink hue to match the stone work. Gorgeous. The interior is what makes No.3 the winner IMO, as an architect I value the usability of space design over all. Heres why I say that: The entrance porch & coat/mud room is great and to me makes a home feel lived in and less grandiose. To the left + upstairs you can have 'the more private house' to the right 'everyone house', allows you to make the left living room your own evening haven with views out to the west for sunset. The right of the house is the activity hub, the kitchen the daytime living are and the snug with a knitting, games or reading room vibe. Presumably a beautiful open double height space will make this side of the house feel so much larger and having the folding doors open to entertain on the patio will be epic. The downstairs Utility and Bathroom at the back is essential and centrally placed for functionality and privacy, downstairs bathroom is always a winner. Now I would personally make some changes/additions to the plans. Here what i'm thinking: Change 1 - Option 2 had that 3rd bedroom, why cant option 3 have a cozy 3rd sleeping area? I would put a 2/3 up landing before the left turn on the stairs, going to a right landing that could access a toilet or bunk room. Utilising the roof space of the entrance (perfect for a tiny Scottish window too). Don't know the exact dimensions so you might need to move the front extension apex a foot higher, but no big deal at this stage. Change 2: If you do want it as a bunk room and can allow for the cost then you could put a rear dormer window for a wee toilet and micro sink in the middle of the landing. Could even be done in timber like a actual 'water closet'. Right above the bathroom so easy to plumb in. Change 3: Cost/structure dependant, I would move the Utility room wall 1 foot into the snug just to give a bit more room for bathroom/utility, the snug can be snugger without any loss. Change 4: The fire place is so important to get right, make sure you spend plenty of time designing it to suit your aesthetic and functional needs. Lots of ways to change this with an island fireplace or a u shape each changing the relationship between snug and sitting area. Change 5: only caught a glimpse of these in the 3d render, but I would probably make the two rear windows in the kitchen/sitting area full height, maybe a bit wider too. Matching the size of the existing is a nice idea but just isnt optimal and wont match the more modern internal look of the folding glass doors to the front. Those windows are likely to give your best wildlife views on the lawn, so maximising them would be good IMO. Change 6: Might just be the model rendering or that its too early but: I would change the cladding timber pattern on the kitchen external gable end. I would keep the lower and sides around the window vertical and then do a gradual rotation from vertical to 45 at the apex above the window. Like a woven timber arch. Personal preference on that though really. Change 7: If you do need more storage or space for water tanks etc, remember you can have a loft area for a meter or two above the 'sitting area' if needed. Still allowing for high ceilings there and full height in the kitchen. Alternatively this could be the 3rd bed/bunk location if you wanted to use the entrance roof space for storage. Just some ideas, hope it give you some inspiration if you read it. Overall 3 is a lovely design and I think it will be so nice to live in. Cant wait to see the design unfold.
@@Anti_thesis gosh nobody is reading all that my friend!
yeah i wass gonna go with option 2 until i saw no bath on the 1st floor
Option 3 ftw! The dual fireplace, the downstairs bathroom, the stunning view towards the forest AND the large open doors to the South.
You'll be so happy to have so much space, and both light and warmth from the sun.
A Bright home full of natural light helps with seasonal depression aswell 🙌🙌
Option #3 - I feel you guys would love having that extra sitting space next to the kitchen...especially when you have guests over! And, who wouldn't want that awesome kitchen window that "frame the surrounding woodlands" - which is one of the main reasons you guys were so attracted to this land in the first place. Who wouldn't love creating meals while being able to see that beautiful forest - and watching the birds dining at The Fat Bird Café! 🐦🌲= 👍
Definitely 1 or 3!! Option 3 is only slightly more my favourite because of the dual fireplace and huge windows facing the adult playground ❤
I also like 1 or 3. Don't 'fake' and extension so that it looks like it's always been there - just add a new extension which blends but is clearly a new build. Sad that none of the options seem to have skylights...? Especially in the old cottage area.
I live in a temperate rain forest and skylights make a huge difference during the dark, rainy months
I totally agree
Thats what the dormer windows will do for the upstairs
@@nickislade5533 To some degree they certainly will allow more light into the space but not nearly as much as skylights/roofligjhts.
Plus, skylights can be used to punctuate any area with light - for example as staircase.
Finally, with the correct rooflight stars and the moon are also visible from below with a quick upward glance.
@@drunkvegangal8089 Option 1 shows a skylight? Also everything can be changed. Agree, extensions should always show that they're new
Architect here: As you go through your day-to-day, imagine living in each of the options! List the pros and cons. (For example, if you have to use the washroom in the night, one plan might work better than the others.)
Don’t be afraid to give your designer/architect tons of feedback! It’s their job to do the best they can and ask for a choice when your wants/needs conflict. Prioritize your wants and needs where feasible, and it’ll allow them to make choices for you. A good designer will note the wants and needs that their design doesn’t meet - this will allow you to offer feedback to make final tweaks. Best of luck!
And make sure you think about the window placement! Where you’d want the most optimal views/sun/shade!
Option 1 for me
Like option 1 first. Than 3 and 2 last. All lovely though. So excited to see this finished.
Option 3 clearly. I can just see Amie standing in front of the kitchen sink, looking out at the beautiful land, seeing a mother deer and her babies!
People are so incredibly mean. Keep on doing you, living life, loving on your loved ones, and post videos whenever you want. You don't owe strangers anything.
Option 3! Having a combined space with both a kitchen/seating area with big windows and views, THIS will be the space where everyone gathers.
And the views will be stunning. I love having a window to enjoy views when I'm in a kitchen.
Option 1 or 3
@@laurietopp9953 Option 3.
I love option 3. All the designs are beautiful, but option 3 with all the natural lighting would be amazing.
Option 1 is most fitting to the original style and looks aesthetically pleasing. Definitely our favourite of the three.
Option 3 would be my preference. Being able to see outdoors so easily and having that open living space will make a huge difference.
Option 1 & 3 should be combined! I feel like they would complement each other so well
I agree! love the roofline of 3 but love the way 1 maintains the original facade
I agree, I could not decide between the two
We agree 🙌💓
Yes this!!
I completely agree with this! I find it hard it choose between the both options. Especially with the choice of the massive bi folding doors letting so much natural light in and you guys looking at that beautiful view! But also keeping as much of the original cottage as much as possible and also keeping the fireplace you both love so much and also maximising the room for your family and friends too x
Option 1. It keeps the cottage close to original - the way you first fell in love with the property.
I like opt 3
OPTION 3 LOOKS LIKE SOMETHING TOU GUYS WOULD LOVE. and a bathroom downstairs would be a game changer
I love option 3. Having a kitchen with all those windows over looking the property would be amazing. Whatever option you choose, make sure you have at least 2 restrooms in the house.
I prefer 3 ( or option 1 if you must). Leave as much of the original cottage layout as possible - charming and cheaper. As someone else said - having a shelter over your front door is a lovely comfort when it's raining. Whichever way is south, catch as much sunshine and view as possible. Love the stone wall and steps. Who knew it would turn out so epic?!
I personally think no 3 would be fantastic, giving you perfect 4 season views from those bifolding doors.
Option 3! The bathroom is absolutely a must for that floor. Not to be a weirdo but if one of you hurts themselves or has surgery, the last freaking thing you want is to have to go up and down stairs to get to the bathroom.
Option 3 for sure, - as you age, you will LOVE having a bathroom and shower on the main floor. Just make sure they have a vent in there lol. Def love mud room, especially with dogs it is a MUST.
Future thinking 💯% even if wasn't their forever home easier bonus for other sellers. Better to have the layout at start than retro fit later on.
Option 3 is my favourite purely on the fact you have huge windows on both the front and side of the extension. Think of the light you’ll get in there and how cosy it will be when it’s got snow everywhere outside
Option three had me at the kitchen sink in front of a big window. Nothing better than washing up after a lovely meal and watching the birds.
I love my kitchen window!
Y’all loving the 2nd one. Your cottage is going to come out so beautiful! Enjoy but embrace the time with family. Nothing more rewarding than to share special moments with loved ones. ❤😊
Option 3 sounds like a dream!!! And it’s the most appealing to the eye from the outside!
Has to be option 1, keeping the existing cottage in its original form. Stunning!
Pollock Country Park in Glasgow has baby highland cows right now, it's near my flat, I can help you steal one? 😂🐮
@@sammie2132 random comment lmao
Option 1 - most aesthetically pleasing and with the most functional living area
Sometimes I watch these videos looking forward to the ads. The creativity is always on point.
My favourite was option 1! It really preserves the charm of the cottage and adds a modern feel to the extension, it looked so so so good! 😍😍😍
Option 3, because it gives a better, longer living/kitchen area with plenty of light coming in
Option 3, because the main living space, where you will spend most of your time will be wide and open. That is the way to go!
There is nothing better than watching Craig chucking rocks with bows in his hair 😂 Bless you both for brightening my days.❤
Depends on what's important to you - extra bedroom then # 2. Personally I would go for number 1 but put a downstairs loo in the utility room, plus open up the fireplace as suggested in option 3. Would have dinning table other side of snug, kitchen placed more centrally in the room against side wall with a kitchen island directly in front, and then seating area at the end with bi-fold doors!
I think options 3 would be even better if you kept the back addition with an upstairs bathroom. Under the back addition you could have a walk in closet and bathroom and use the "living room" as an owner suite/main bedroom. The head height would be so much better, you would have more sunlight with better views, and you could walk out onto the patio. The two upstairs rooms could be for guests or an office space.
In my opinion, the option no. 1 is the best one with the best views to the front, best layout combination of original and new, and best outdoor indoor space connection. You could make a lovely outdoor sitting porch in front of the big glass doors and also glorify the original building in new form which made you and us fall in love at once because if you want everything changed and new you can demolish the building and make a new one easily. But at the end of the day it is you guys who are the best because you know the real picture. What you love we love more...❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤
Agreed
I love that 2 really has you living within the original cottage, but also love the longer extension with 3 as it feels a lot more spacious. So personally would combine those 2. Can't wait to see what you end up building!
#1. I think it keeps the most character and gives you the most new usable spaces, too.
Option 3 marries the old with the new so beautifully. Neither aspect gets neglected and both are equally enjoyed. Sort of like your own synergy!! And, don't even get me started about the double dose of light, fireplace, ambiance, and views made possible by those extra features in the kitchen and sitting area! Wow!!
I love option 1 because you really see the facade of the cottage.
facade?
I like option 3 best but instead of the wood cladding the white from option 2 as it works so well with the stone. Beautiful 🤩
The reuse of all the boulders and stones is amazing, so beautiful
Option 3. Exactly what I thought the designers would come up with, but even more beautiful.
My vote is for option 3. Gives a lot of light that I'm sure you'll really love in the winter.
Number 3 - you’ll want the big biofolds to enjoy the view!
I like option 2. I feel it blends the best with the aesthetic of the original cottage.
I vote option 3 for the amazing sunlight it will let in while preserving the original cottage exterior.
Option 3…love that you would have a downstairs bathroom, (maybe just need a half bath down and a full bath upstairs), the open/dual fireplace and all the light flooding into the kitchen. ❤
Option 1 or option 3. The latter has the dual fireplace an the amazing dual aspects from kitchen and drawing room space, except the upstairs will have minimal changes. Option 2 gives you 3 bedrooms and if you have children or guests that 3rd bedroom is a huge plus. Option 2- main floor bathroom will be something you will be very thankful for 'once you are living in the cottage'. Maybe meld all those features into one. Your wall is looking amazing!
Option 1 guys, picture this! Great big christmas tree in the gable end window, table all dressed up, snow on the ground and a full family gathering! 💪💪
These sponsors have to be giggling and thankful, I normally skip over the adds- but I watch everyone of yours because they are so stinkin' funny! Both 1 and 3 are stunning designs!
Those men building the steps are so talented, wow ❤
It usually takes a couple weeks for the birds to start to come to the feeders… don’t stress they’ll show up, and it’ll be worth the wait! ❤
I also want to say how talented your stone mason is. Truly a masterpiece.
I love option 1, let the cabin shine
I always suggest having 2 toilets. So merge a couple of ideas where you have the bathroom upstairs near the bedrooms (with the shower), but also throw in a half-bath downstairs in the utility (for Craig's poops or Guests 😂)
Option 1 I like the best, keep the original look with the bifold doors in the sitting area for the views, love the weathered timber idea also 👍
Option 3. Having the fireplace open to 2 rooms will provide that cozy feel you both love!
I like option 3 best but something for you to consider, the direction of your windows. If you have south or west facing windows that shine onto a stone wall the wall will actually hold heat during the day and release the heat into the house at night saving on your heating bill particularly evident during the winter months. South facing windows will have less glare across it than a west or east facing window which are prone to this issue and can totally kill a view which we all know you love. Increased natural light some place like a dining room or kitchen can actually stimulate your appetite and help with symptoms of depression. As a design I like the look of 3 best closely followed by option 1 because it also has big windows and I love the look of natural light.
Hope everything alright missed you the last few weeks
Option 1, preserves the original cottage and adds a lovely big extra space
Option 1 and black oil sunflower seeds for your bird friends.
Option 1 as the windows face the country side which will be lovely
A mix of design plan one and three would be amazing, the toilet downstairs would be so useful in the utility space but i love the layout of design one with the porch at the back and the original layout with the snug and fireplace kept and the extension layout looks so much better in the design plan one!
Option 3. That gable end looking out on to the woodland would be amazing!
My wife and I like option 3. Great amount of sun and kinda keeps the original cottage and just extends it. Whatever you choose we’ll be watching and cheering for you both!
Option 1! It’s beautiful and the fewer changes to the cottage, the easier, faster and cheaper it will be.
Option 3 hands down, that view from the new extension with a log fire 🔥 particularly during those winter long months and those very long days during the summer.
Definitely Option 2. It fits in with the original design and the environment. The other two look like a Cabin Home in Montana USA. Where you are, you'd want a lovely white washed cottage. Or I would If I lived there. Like something from P.S. I Love You or Holiday. Anyway, Love you guys! Carry on!
Option 1 but with more/larger windows on the side of the extension. Retains the integrity of the original cottage but gives you a lovely modern kitchen. ❤
Option 1. No question. I'm so excited for you both!!
Option 1!
It keeps the original and it doesn‘t take away as much from your garden!
Option 1, without hesitation. You chose to buy a cottage in Scotland for a reason and option 1 by far keeps the original charm of a Scottish cottage which I too love. The addition makes a statement as clearly being an “addition” and doesn’t detract from the esthetics of the cottage too much. Either way, enjoy your beautiful new home guys!!!
3 is my first choice, 1 then 2.....Honestly you can't go wrong with any of them!!
Option 3!!! Do the most you can the first time you do it!🥰👍
Option 3 is awesome, when you get in from a trip especially a muddy one, having a downstairs shower and toilet is a godsend, but getting up in the middle of the night its also much nicer not to have to go downstairs to use a toilet. The dual aspect fireplace is a nice quirky feature too and the extension parts are very complimentary to the rest of the house. Exciting times xx
I like option 3 most, definitely a bathroom downstairs, toilet shower upstairs, I'd want to make sure have a lovely view to west for sunsets.
Definitely option 3 as love the increased use of glass from option 1 to make the most of the view. I also like the extension being long so it's tucked behind the original cottage on approach!
Option 1 for me. Keeps more of the character.
Combine option 1 & 3! The dual fireplace would be amazing and such a great source of heat throughout the home, and option #1 accentuates the brick of the cottage!🤗
Option 1, keeps the original cottage within the design, keep up the supercalifragilisticexpialidocious work darlings xx Ian and Mike from suffolk ❤
Aimee is such a one-in-a-million woman, and she has no idea! Love you two, certainly think you'd deserve +1 Million subscribers, and adore option 3!
Oh, I couldn’t agree more!! Aimee and Craig you get better and better every week…please folks subscribe and follow these 2 uniquely, lovable people❤
I really love Option 1, because it is the perfect mix of the „old“ Cottage property and your new addition. It is gorgeous
Option 3 is the clear winner in my opinion.
I love all of them but Option 3 is really sticking out to me!! It’s so beautiful. I’m sure that whatever you choose will be incredible.
option 1. I can already imagine how beautiful it would look and feel in snowy Christmas weather! 🏴
Birdies always take a couple of weeks to suss out a new feeder and decide to make use. They will come. Word will spread. Also....option 1 👍🏼👍🏼
Yes! It can take a month sometimes for the birds to decide it’s safe ❤ Don’t give up on them Aimee!!❤❤❤❤ Option 1 for sure 🏡
So happy you snipped off the sticks that the butterflies were on on your birdhouse! I bet that will help!
Those northern lights were beautiful. The rock wall and stairs are looking marvelous, can't wait to see the finished product. Thanks for sharing. Love yah Nancy
🤤 option 3; view of the hill from a new living room area. I do like the mudroom in the back.
Option 1 for me. Love the huge windows and it allows the cottage to shine.
I feel option one embraces the original cottage the most.
Option 3 for me, by elongating the side and minimally adding to the front with the main entrance, you'll be keeping the approach view of the house as similar to the current cottage (which is one of the things you fell in love with), the main entrance also gives some kind of separation from the front driveway and the outside area of the bi-folds in the extension also a sort of privacy from the front approach too. the dual aspect fireplace is a great feature to have and also will help with warming such a large space in winter in conjunction with traditional heating.
I’ve been looking forward to this all week. Keep up the good work and the laughs xx
Btw Option 1 for me - bloody fab!
I like the way Option 1 looks the best, but I think Option 3 makes the most sense. It would be nice if you could get an extra 1/2 bath somewhere 🚽
Regarding the bird house, you should put a stick with leaves on it. For humans your birdhouse is probably pretty pleasing, but when you look at it from a birds perspective (from above) it doesn’t look very inviting. Therefore you have to teach them and give them clues where they might find food. :)
You can always sprinkle the bird seed all around. They’ll find it on the ground and then keep looking for more. Honestly all the options for the remodel are great, of course! I would go with mash up! I want the most amount of windows for the view as possible! Also would cover those windows with film the you can’t see into the house from the outside. I can’t wait for your videos each week! They make my day! ❤️
3 all the way!! To me, it seems more appealing to the eye and will give you more patio room.
I 100% think you should mix 1 and 3. I love the idea of keeping the original layout of the cottage but elongating it and creating the layout from the first option. Amy you can’t go wrong! You have such a unique style and it should shine through the cottage so everyone who passes by knows that calamity banister lives there! 😂
You will always want a bathroom near your bedrooms for when you get up in the night but a downstairs one as well would be ace.
The wall and stairs already look amazing and authentically old. Small native mosses and plants in the wall would be great Aimee.
Option 3. Love the cosy bedrooms, double sided fire and windows for the views.
Option 3 looks like it fits the land better and has beautiful windows
