- In The Sopranos, Silvio Dante is Tony Sopranos' consigliere, friend and advisor. Silvio is one of the main characters of the show, and today I wanted to analyse the character and argue why I think he is the strong, silent type.

Silvio was the most level headed out of Tony’s crew. He’s not a hot head. He’s just a stone cold monster

He is one of the scariest characters too. Because he does everything so quiet. And how he only blows up when he's losing at something. Like at cards, or during the soccer game.
When he has to kill someone, or blow up a restaraunt, he is ice cold. That is terrifying.
Unless he's gambling.... He can be a sick fuck when he gambles.

I found Silvio's on screen & SVZ's Real Life Wife to be the most alluring, drama-free and the best significant other of the entire cast most comfortable with that life.
She certainly helped with his reserved demeanor.

I've said it before, I'll say it again, till the cows come home. Little Steven, Miami Steve, spent the previous 25 years, touring with arguably the best rock band in the history, then migrates across the entertainment industry into one of the most iconic roles in television, flawlessly. Truly one of the greats.
His work to be cherished for decades.
He also won a good pin at the 1996 winter olympics in Lillyhammer

I've seen Springsteen 15 times, 14 with the E Street Band. I've seen Southside Johnny and the Asbury Jukes, formed by Steve Van Zandt about five or six times. I've seen Bon Jovi, heavily influenced by Springsteen and the Jukes, four times. They are the best bands I've seen. But the best single show I've seen is Little Steven (Van Zandt) and the Disciples of Soul about seven years ago. The theater was a quarter-to-half full, and many of us got free tickets, but he played like it was sold out.

What a lot of people seem to miss when describing Silvio as a "cartoonish" caricature, is that Van Zandt actually played Silvio a lot more subdued in the first season & really only started being more exaggerated/animated in the following seasons.
I can imagine that the italian patriotism was written for Paulie, you can see glipmses of it in the coffee shop bit with Big Pus. "Italians, how we miss out on this, Cappucino, Americano, we invented this stuff"

I think the Columbus Day thing perfectly suited Sil. We know very little about the guy, his opinions and here were see him saying “I’m gonna take action here”… i think very interesting add on to the character

Nice comprehensive analysis. Syl’s an old fashioned mobster in the mode of Neil Dellacroce, good at overseeing the traditional blue collar rackets, but not an earner on the level of Ralph or having the vision for something like Webistics. He’s also shrewd in withholding his opinions until others have spoken, as in the matter of Vito’s adverse pharmaceutical reaction. What an encore career for Little Steven.

I was going to say Artie, but he even F 'ed up and screwed over Tony a few times. Silvio, just the one time w the tiles, and he made his point. So I agree 100%, Silvio always had Tony's best interest as the boss

When Syl gets ambushed he has time to get his gun in his hand before he gets hit. Chris would have shot both attackers dead in that time.
I never saw it as the character Silvio was wearing a wig, the actor Van Zandt was, but not Silvio in my eyes.

don't forget the scene where he goes to "collect" Tracee from Ralphie's house. He keeps his cool inside the house of another wise guy, but as soon as she shows him attitude, just outside, he beats her pretty hard

Chase being a huge music fan and a drummer loved Van Zandt’s music, as he said in a commentary for the episode where ‘Precious’ by The Pretenders is playing (like most used likely his choice), ‘I queued up to buy that album on the day it came out……I wasn’t a kid, I was 32 years old’.
So that might have been an influence in getting Van Zander, with the meta touch of one of his tracks (as a favorite of Gloria as she writhes on top on Tony), playing with the volume turned up by her.

This is easily one of your best essays. Your insights into Silvio's strengths and weakness demonstrate incredible attention to detail. I've already watched the whole show twice. The observation where you point out Silvio's ability to be both vague and direct, saying exactly what he needs to say to every situation is the type of thing that gets me longing for a third pass at the show. I never considered that in the conversation between Tony and Sil after the floor tile fiasco, Sil made it clear that passing over Patsy was a bad move. You really have the gift of analyzing literature.

100%, I always thought of Paulie as the cartoonish character on the show.
Excellent analysis of my favorite character of The Sopranos. Personally, I like the fact that Silvio is an enigma, I like that there's a little mystique surrounding his character and it suits what his position in the family is, too. The consigliere position is one that is a little mysterious and shadowy since their job is to advise the boss and administration of the family and to keep their ear to the ground as far as what's happening on the street with different factions and families. It's also not uncommon for them to have strong ties to the legitimate world as well as be the liaison with other families.

According to some sources, the Consiglieri is a sort of labourers' representative who is elected by the soldiers, not appointed by the Boss. Obviously, that might have changed during different eras of the mob and may only be true for some families, but it's an interesting idea when looking at Sil, especially looking at the floor tiles incident.
Yes, he's the #3 actually. And is the representative/messenger role from the Boss and Underboss to the rest of the guys.

Sil’s best scene, IMO, is when Tony tells him that Richie is looking to replace him. First, Sil’s reaction is controlled anger; he’s pissed, but he doesn’t fly off the handle because, given Richie’s attitude, he knew that this was always a possibility. Then, when Tony asks his advice, Sil takes a moment to think things through, even distancing himself from Tony for a moment, then comes back and says “I genuinely don’t think there’s anything to gain by keeping him around,” essentially telling him that Richie should be whacked. But note that he never actually says it; that’s because he knows that someone could be listening in…
One of my favorite scenes is the one with Silvio and Tony in Tony’s basement during the floor tile incident.
I loved his character, you need someone like this in your team. You can rely on him and he’s level headed. Steve was great in Lillehammer too.

I think it's pretty funny when one killer says to another killer, "You have a problem with authority." I always figured mobsters admired authority figures!
Sil's facial expressions alone were hilarious. At the same time, he was incredibly capable and lethal. I loved that scene early on where Paulie and Sil were roughing up Ariel at his hotel, and Ariel suddenly got the better of Paulie who yelled for Sil. Out of nowhere Sil pulls a wooden mallet or meat tenderizer and that takes care of that. Cool weapon. Not a knife, not a gun. Very imaginative weapon to carry.
4:38 don’t forget about Vito’s wacky mix up of the medications that caused him to catch not pitch, and make him develop an affinity for Leather Hats, Vests, and Assless Chaps
Yea I think it's a great point, the reason he's the most underdeveloped character in the mob is exactly so we see him as the best succesor for Don. We haven't gotten the chance to see any flaws, but also we've seen enough of him to the point were we can start saying, maybe he just don't got that many, or any.
The times make the man, not the other way around!
