I have an old Peavey Butcher amp somebody at GC priced at $99. It is HEAVY. must weigh 60 lbs and that is just the head. Somebody on a website compared it a Dumble amp. Very large transformer.

And BTW, despite what most metal guitarists today think, the good old Boss HM-2 can do more than Swedish death metal, remember that this pedal has been around since the early 80's, well before the Swedish death metal scene, and some of us old 80's metal heads go back to those days when the Boss HM-2 was used to play the heaviest sounds of the day such as Venom, Hellhammer, early Slayer. 🤘🤘🤘
My 1986 Mesa/Boogie Mklll Simulclass is a very strong amp and capable of extreme heavy tones and was the amp used on Metallica’s “Black” album. This one has the Marshall style “crunch” channel. I may not have all the other hottest amps out there but this covers a major amount of territory.

Surprised that the Framus Cobra isn't on this list?? As far as JCM800's go, they changed the high gain world but what most people have to realize that is that the heaviest JCM800 tones came from modded versions.
Mike Soldsno sold his operations to Boutique Amps, which handles Friedman and Diezel amps. I did hear Mike say at NAMM that selling wasn't so much about retiring, just retiring from ordering parts, soothing dealers bruises, tracking shipments, and all the day to day that goes with running a company himself. Those Rivera cabs Mick Thompson uses are loaded with Celestion GK 100 speakers. They are crushing. I have a 2x12 with them. Speaking of Mick Mars Ive always thought the Shout at the Devil album had killer guitar tone. Just Raw AF.
Love the first two Crue albums for Mick's tone and tuning. He's tuned to D, which got me into that tuning. I like Metal, but more of A Dokken, Mercyful Fate, Maiden type of Metal. I want low end punch but not into the muddy "chugs chugs woo" horseshit that is soooooo in fashion now. Mick is a cool rocker that I dont mind admitting I want to sound like.

I always enjoy your vids man. I think you should have done this in 2 videos. Have a tube/hybrid vid and a solid state vid. It let's you do more possibilities and gives you more subject matter. You're channel is going to take off and when it does, don't be afraid to do subsections bro.
I love that you included things that are not on the radar for some of us. Cool to hear a list that isn’t a regurgitation of the amps everyone says should be on a list like this. You didn’t put my favorite on the list, I kinda like that. No I’ll go listen to all of these cool amps I’m not as familiar with. Great channel!
Your trippin. He's never used boss fuzz pedals. He mostly used a Green Russian muff on Dopesmoker. These days he uses custom boutique muff, fuzz face, superfuzz and tonebender clones.......
The thing with Cantrell’s tone on their early albums is that it was more or less an equal mix between the Uberschall, A dual rectifier and even one of Cantrell’s old Marshall 800s.The uberschall alone doesn’t really give you that Cantrell tone frankly speaking. Still a killer amp tho.
Yep, Cantrell is known for using multiple amps to record their records. I think he recorded the rhythm guitar on “Check My Brain” 11 different times with multiple different amps layered on top of each other. He’s been doing that for decades. That’s actually a testament to how great of a guitarist he is because it’s actually really difficult to play the exact same thing like that perfectly in time right on top of each other.
@@RobertWJackson I quite agree and he’s so incredibly humble as well; often quoting that the genius behind his tone is actually his producer who worked with him on the early albums. What an absolute lad!
My buddy likes his block letter 5150 over his Mesa triple rec. I got a 6505mh and love it with an overdrive in front and eq through effects loop and for $400, totally worth it!
While I would not consider the JCM-800 super heavy by modern amp standards, tone-wise it's one of my favorite amps ever so I'm cool with it being on the list just due to how iconic it is.
That’s why I put it on there. It’s also a prime example why “heavy” guitar tone isn’t always about gain. A JCM 800 cranked up to the sweet spot is as heavy as anything else out there.
I laughed out loud when he mentioned the Crate GXT-100 because I had the combo version of that amp back in the late 90s. I don't remember much about it just that it had two pre-amp tubes. It was the last solid state amplifier I owned. When it went bad I went to my local Guitar Center and bought a 65 Twin Reverb, an amp that I still have today.
A point in the Marshall JVM's favor, the guitarists of Nile, a brutal, technical death metal band use the four channel version, and their guitar tones are SAVAGE. Marshalls just have that upper mid grind that works amazingly well for heavy metal. There's a reason Marshall has the reputation it does.
Love my JCM 2000 which I believe is what Nile uses. I didn't think it was going to be as good of a metal amp when I first tried it, but with a boost it is brutal.
Mike Soldano sold the company to Boutique Amps Distribution out of southern California. They are supposedly going to start off with a GTO pedal and a reworked SLO, and supposedly going to launch them at winter NAMM. Great video and great list! I actually am fortunate enough to have two of the amps from this list. The Dual Rec and a JVM 210. Great great amps!
Love your vids man👍 James never used the Herbert only the vh4 paired with a Mesa triaxis . Now live they’re using all axe effects , to my knowledge anyway.
Thanks man! Yep, they’ve both entirely switched to the Matrix power amps and Axe Fx for preamps in their live rigs. If I didn’t see a rig rundown video on that recently, I honestly never would have known. I saw them live earlier this year and they sounded like they always do.
I Agree with the SVT, if any guitarist gets the chance, plug in and be wowed. Im an alien in my beloved Doom community as i happen to love and prefer modern gear. Great episode!
Hello Robert, I have the same Marshall as you and a Marshall DSL100, both with 4x12's. 4 Fender's, an Orange Dual Terror tube amp, a Peavey classic tube with dual 2x12s cabinets. And some others. I started to buy a bognor but opted for the Orange. Great video.
Great list dude and they all sound great for the most. I tried a Krankenstein a number of years ago and found it difficult to dial in exactly as you said. I am lucky to (kinda) own 3 of the amps on this list. They all sound phenomenal in their own ways. Would love a Bogner or Diezel but currently settled with my Mesa Roadking II, Soldano SLO100 *with the depth mod) and a Marshall custom shop JCM800 2203. They are my 3 holy grail of tone amps personally and could never part with any of them. Rock on!
The VHT Pittbull. Still the best sounding heavy amp i have heard live. When I saw Pro-pain live years ago they were using the VHT Pittbulls. Heavy as F**K. Right now i am loving my PRS MT15. I would love a deizel but i cant justify the price
Hey Rob - I've been playing a VHT CL-100 (Steve serviced it for me personally, which made me know it was taken care of) since 2002. It's been my ride-or-die ever since. I definitely encourage you in picking up one online. Eventually I'll get my hands on one of Fryette's newer amps. Great video - it's all subjective based on the player, but man what a place to start.
Those amps got nothing on my Orange micro dark with a Metal Zone in the front and one in the effects loop thru a Mesa Rectifier 4x12! I’m talking heavy duty Man!
What about the JCA (Jet City Amps) 22, 50 or 100? Or what I call them, Soldano's at 1/10th the price. No they are not made anymore but still no dramatic price surges on the used market.
Hi Robert, I have only recently discovered your CZcams channel and have become an instant huge fan. Anyway, I was a front of house engineer for many years including Motorhead, Chicago and Dio and so many others I couldn't count them all. One of my last tours was with Heaven and Hell (Everyone called us Black Sabbath but without Ozzie we couldn't use that name officially) My question is Tony was using Laney amps on the last tour so I was wondering if you'd featured Laney on any of your clips? Cheers, Kevin
A Laney is featured a lot more often on my channel than most people realize, actually. I use a Laney IRT-Studio for most of my full-track demos with bass and drums when I’m doing pedal demos. It’s mounted in my studio rack, so it doesn’t usually make it in the camera shot during those segments, but it does get used a lot. I did do a video specifically on that amp about a year ago, if you haven’t seen it. If you’re new to my channel, than you’re probably not yet aware that, while I love Laney amps as much as the next guy, I’m actually NOT a fan of the AOR’s at all because I HATE the EQ on them. I think it’s far more trouble than it’s worth. But the Ironhearts, the LA series, and the Cub series amps are all great. I’ve not yet heard the Lionheart series amps, but they sure look cool, and I can only imagine they stack up with the rest of their line.
Good point on the Uberschall... It has a weird and congested midrange. I like those Marshall JVM heads but never understood why they are so noisy. I've had plenty of high gain amps, but the JVM is just crazy noisy.
for metal I'm happy with my triple rectifier running through a marshall cab, but I'd really love to have or at least get the opportunity to play through a warhead just to check it out. None of the gear shops in my area are randall dealers. does that warhead have power switching or some sort of attenuator?
I'll put my Lee Jackson xls 1000 up against most of those amps unbelievable amount of gain with spare and a punishing low end even going through vintage 30 s but anyway I like the list very informative
kiriks1 Do you mind sharing how you like to run yours? I have one but I’ve never been able to dial it in the way I like. Pedals, settings, etc. I know it’s a monster because it’s the only amp I’ve ever owned that I dial the gain back a little bit.
Very cool there was a lot to unpack in this episode. First, not sure how I have until this day completely missed the Motley Crew self titled almulm. Lol here I am in 2019 with to me a new Crue album. Will never argue against Marshall as you know I am a fan and yes you need 4 channels. Krank Rev 1 was new to me and holy crap that's heavy. Had to go listen to some tones. My additions to this list, won't surprise you are based on Marshall, the Metropoulis line of amps, these are great amps Plexi with modern features. Also the Mesa Boogie Stilletto. Thing of Marshall Plexi meets dual rec. Oh not sure why your clean amps video is gaining steam but I got an addition to it. A Dumble, yeah I know none of us will ever buy one but got to play one recently. This is by far the best clean amp I have ever played. Clean is so perfect, and then clean where is just starts to break up is heaven. I now know why these amps are such legends.
Go listen to that Crüe record, you’ll wonder how come you never knew about it before. I’m familiar with the Mesa Stiletto amps. You’re right, that was basically Mesa-Boogie’s Marshall-esque circuit of that era. Not a direct clone, by any means, but they are really cool. I think the dude from Three Days Grace used a Stiletto to record their entire One-X record. (I think that’s what that record was called, anyway.) The reason why I didn’t include the Dumble on the clean amps video is exactly what you mentioned: the price tag. Those things seem to start around $90,000 these days, and there are only a select few players in the world who could possibly afford one. I’ve actually never even seen one in person, much less gotten to play one, so that’s another reason I didn’t include it.
Now as you know, I like to play in a lot of Open Jams. Most play Blues.I leave my amps at home because amps are already provided. But if it comes down to bring my own amp to the Jams, which one of these amps would work for a Squier tele? I should add this too. I also play harmonica.Which one of these amps have a great sound if using a bullet?
@@RobertWJackson There is a Blues Jam here in Greeley, Colorado I go to every Wednesday night.Boy do we get pretty loud.I think the Diezel would blow people out.
Why no Dual - Triple Rec? That’s one of the best amps ever! If I could justify the money, I’d have one. I’d put it on top of a half stack and melt Oompa Loompas with it!
I’m not a real big Rectifier guy, though I do admit I go through hot and stretches with them. I don’t hate them by any means, but I do much prefer the Mark IV and Mark V models. I will say, however, that the Mesa Recto 4x12 is one of the best speaker cabs on the planet. More amp companies need to steal that page out of the Mesa playbook.
Paul Von Tyrant has that happened or is it a what if? They’d have to split the money less ways, lol. Glenn Hughes is amazing but I’d worry about how many more years he can do what he does
John Corabi has played in so many different bands because he’s extremely talented and in very high demand. I saw Ratt out on tour about 10 years or so ago, and none other than John Corabi was their replacement for the late Robbin Crosby on guitar, and he did a great job for them. Then immediately after the tour, Stephen Pearcy went on another one of his drunken tirades, taking out all of his own problems on the rest of the band and that was the end of that lineup. LOL
Killer amps and I really dig the design of their effects loops. Brian Wampler even got permission from Dave Friedman to use that circuit in the Wampler Bravado. The Friedmans sound awesome, but they sure are pricey.
Maybe I am just a product if my era, but the JCM800 half stack will always reign Supreme in my universe. The secret to getting the really heavy tones out of that beast is to use a Ibanez TS9 as a clean boost and tone filter for that mid bump, run directly into the front input. That and the combination of Celestion GK100 speakers on the bottom with celestion V30's on the top. After gigs I kept expecting to meet Lucifer in the parking lot with a contract written in blood. LOLMFAO,
One word to end this list man. *ENGL* The Savage is aptly named, and while I don't prefer them to the Savage, the Fireball and Powerball are crushingly heavy as well. I'll probably hate myself for mentioning this, but the Marshall JCM 900SL-X is essentially a single channel JCM 800 with an extra gain stage (that even has its own knob). Total sleeper, especially with a boost up front.
Hey bro. Good stuff! Any of these amps work well for variety? For example like the Knucklehead which is 3 channel. I need that crushing heavy slipknot tone but also want to cover more straight up hard rock. Maybe even the Mesa Mark V or JP2C? Diamond amp, Diezel Einstein? Curious your recommendation!? Thank you!
I had a JCM 900 from 2003 to 2012 and I loved it but it was always going out just before a show and I’m not sure what was wrong with it I didn’t know much about working on tube amps back then but I eventually sold it broken for like $300
So as soon as the video got to the Crate GXT-100 part, my house lost power for a second, so it must be a hell of an amp, I’ll trade my Fender USA telecaster in for one👍
I have used an Engl Invader and an Engl savage. Especially the Invader blows every amp away. One of my favorite amps ever next to the Diezel VH4. I have yet to try a Mesa Mark V, those seem great too but are quite expensive here in Europe. Engl's aren't to pricy here. You find and Invader used for about 800 Euro's which is great.
One of the coolest guitar amps I ever had was a 62 fender baseman cab and top. I ended up with it because the guy I bought from couldn't sell it because it was a bass amp and nobody would buy it
Missing quite a few heavy metal juggernauts here. The Peavey 5150 literally defined the tone of heavy metal in the 90s and 2000s, and it continues to do so to this day. Everyone from Ingested to Machine Head use the 5150 block letter in the studio, and that amp is responsible for the craziest heavy tones I've ever heard. The Revv Generator 120 is probably the most versatile amp I've ever seen. Just check out a demo and you'll see what I mean. The Fortin Meshuggah is absolutely bone crushing and there's not really much else to say about it. The EVH 5150 III EL34 is basically carrying on the legacy of the 5150 block letter, and has shaped the sound of modern metal in much the same way. The ENGL Powerball is a monster of a metal amp, and is used for searing lead tones all over the place by power metal players the world over. The Friedman Butterslax or BE-50 are absolutely enormous sounding, as is the JJ Junior. Absolutely killer all around. Back to Peavey, the new Invective amp is a fucking beast, awesome gain structure and articulation.
I had to cut it off somewhere. But I would argue that the Mesa-Boogie Dual and Triple Rectifiers defined metal throughout the 90’s and especially the 2000’s.
I scored a Diezel 4X12 straight cab for $700. Chose it over the Marshall 1960. Guy said "not too many people know Diezel", i said "i do" and bought it with the quickness
I had a Diezel 4x12 for awhile. I knew I wasn’t going to be able to afford a matching Herbert head to go with it anytime soon, so I traded it for an ‘87 Charvel Model 5, which I still have. Part of me is still kicking myself for letting that cab go because I only paid $400 for it. LOL
Rob, I’m sure these amps crank but... they are way too much amp for where I live and take up too much space. What would you recommend in terms of small to mid scale sized combo and modeling amps that you can play at either reasonable volume or direct output to an interface with? I apologize if you have a video which already covers this topic that I’m not aware of.
joehervey84 great sounding amps, and I’d even go so far as to call the 5150/6505 Series one of the greatest sounding rock amps ever. They’re great for metal, as well, but for HEAVY tones I just can’t put them in the same realm as the Herbert, Knucklehead, Thunderverb, etc. The Peaveys are heavy-sounding, they’re just not THAT heavy-sounding. I own a couple of them and they’re great, so I have plenty of experience with them.
Thanks for doing this video. It's amazing how many guys I know say that Orange amps can't do metal. At least the Rockerverb doesn't seem to do metal well. Lots of heavy players use Orange so I was thrown off when I heard it mentioned that the RV barely does metal.
@@RobertWJackson Exactly. I agree with you, man. I love theTone Wars CZcams show and Jarrod is awesome but he mentioned to me that the Rockerverb MK III just barely does metal, so I am being a little causious before buying this amp. It may just be how he plays that it doesn't do what he wants. We are all different. I've been thinking of getting a RV. Yes, I'm a big Jim Root fan. I know one of the guys in Korn also used Orange for a while.
I’m not familiar with Tone Wars or the Jarrod individual you mentioned, but I don’t agree with him at all about the Rockerverb. That amp - ALL THREE GENERATIONS - has been used by tons of metal players since it came out.
I had the opportunity to try this orange, and I was blown away. So if this diezel can beat that wow. I think the price has to be a part of the equation
You should totally try out a peavey 3120. I have one and my god. Super thick tone. Basically combining a dual rec and a 6505. Basically take the low end of a mesa with the gain structure of a 6505 but without the noise 6505s are known from. My fav amp peavey ever made
I’ve played several, actually. I was still working at the site when they came out and we carried them for a bit. Unfortunately, they were a short-lived model for Peavey. I actually liked the 3120 better than the 6505+. I never did learn why Peavey discontinued those. They were $1000 when they were brand new, but now they’re DIRT CHEAP on the used market, if you can find them.
@@RobertWJackson Yessir ive got 2 of em, i never heard of em until max cavalera from soulfly used them and i tried one out and it blew me away. Id LOVE to see you do a demo of one
I just watched a vid with and about M. Soldano that they are still going to be made and have some improvements, same prices but on that note, I got a t-shirt that says "I'd fart but I like these pants".
ALSO, I bought a CHEEP Glarry P Bass with amp. Will My Marshall or Gorilla handel the bass? l did replace the string's & set the Truss, Action, Etc & l recommend it for someones first bass. The amp, is a 20W bass amp, LOW ON POWER BAD
Wished you had went into detail about thevoicing, frequencey responce, negative-feedback vs no negative-feedback, feel, tightness, looseness, sponginess, etc...

@@IllusionaryFuneral wasn't that the Savage 120?
Thanks man! Glad you enjoyed it!
The heaviest guitar tone I've ever heard is Matt Pike's tone on Dopesmoker. So don't forget to add the Matamp GT120 to the list of heaviest amps!
But his heavy tone is a Boss fuzz pedal. The Matamps are fantastic pedal platforms. BTW, Behringer makes a clone of that fuzz pedal the SF-300.
@@mattfleming2287 Fuzzlord pedals are some of the craziest sounding fuzz pedals.
I saw Sleep and Sunn 0))) in the same night. It was fucking gnarly
Your trippin. He's never used boss fuzz pedals. He mostly used a Green Russian muff on Dopesmoker. These days he uses custom boutique muff, fuzz face, superfuzz and tonebender clones.......
This guy is awesome, the humor just sets it over the top. Keep em coming.
🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣
I dont like FFDP but i have heard war is the answer and the guitar tone on that album really is killer.
The Stones used SVTs live on the 1970 and 1972 tours, while not high gain, certainly the only major band that I know of that used them as guitar amps
Yessir. But sometimes shear volume can equate to high gain, especially back in those days.
You missed the ENGL Fireball and Revv Generator! Those two are CRUSHING amps!
Thanks Robert for the video. Some interesting choices. Most I agree with. Always enjoy the channel. Thank you!! Will sign up for the Facebook group.
What about the crate gx130c or the g130 see for that matter or the Mesa boogie simul class Mark 3 coliseum and the Randall V2
Robert well done bro.. Im.a fan of the 6505 series. Ya list the Rivera Mick Thompson I'd love to own he is my favorite modern player.
Such a great video you have out together. How come no Engl?
You have me wanting Diamond! :)
Rock on!
Im glad you also love Jerry Cantrell sound, i believe you can't go wrong using any of Cantrell's gear, he haves a great taste for gear...
I’ll be interested to see what Gibson cooks up for him since he just signed an endorsement deal with them recently.
I usually hate people that just talk about tone without demonstrating but your list concurs with my taste, and a couple I hadn't heard of...
The VHT Pittbull. Still the best sounding heavy amp i have heard live. When I saw Pro-pain live years ago they were using the VHT Pittbulls. Heavy as F**K. Right now i am loving my PRS MT15. I would love a deizel but i cant justify the price
I can justify the price, I just can’t afford it. LOL
@@RobertWJackson I should have re wrote that one because yes , you are correct there.
Engl Powerball, Hughes and Kettner Coreblade, Mesa 50 cal, Carvin Legacy........
Who’s Rob?
Those amps got nothing on my Orange micro dark with a Metal Zone in the front and one in the effects loop thru a Mesa Rectifier 4x12! I’m talking heavy duty Man!
🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣
You can also run a third Metal Zone before the speaker cabinet to unlock god mode
Great list! How many times did you have to record saying "Crate GXT 100" before you could do it with a straight face?
Just once. LOL
Bogner Uberschall, Wizard MTL, Mesa Boogie Dual/Triple Rectifier, ENGL Fireball/Savage, KSR Ares, Fortin
JCM800 with a Tube Screamer and a good distortion pedal can hold it's ground against any amp
What about the JCA (Jet City Amps) 22, 50 or 100? Or what I call them, Soldano's at 1/10th the price. No they are not made anymore but still no dramatic price surges on the used market.
Hi Robert,
I have only recently discovered your CZcams channel and have become an instant huge fan.
Cheers,
Kevin
MC ‘94 is actually several amps blended - the predominant being the SLO-100 ;-)
Good point on the Uberschall...
It has a weird and congested midrange.
I like those Marshall JVM heads but never understood why they are so noisy. I've had plenty of high gain amps, but the JVM is just crazy noisy.
Micks tone on that Crue album was AMAZING
Yes it was!
This was great, thank you so much. Also consider the Randall Satan and, 6505+ and EVH
Thanks! 6505 is explained further down in the comment thread.
for metal I'm happy with my triple rectifier running through a marshall cab, but I'd really love to have or at least get the opportunity to play through a warhead just to check it out. None of the gear shops in my area are randall dealers. does that warhead have power switching or some sort of attenuator?
I don’t believe so, but it’s a solid-state amplifier, so it does play nice at lower volumes.
(I think that’s what that record was called, anyway.)
The reason why I didn’t include the Dumble on the clean amps video is exactly what you mentioned: the price tag. Those things seem to start around $90,000 these days, and there are only a select few players in the world who could possibly afford one. I’ve actually never even seen one in person, much less gotten to play one, so that’s another reason I didn’t include it.
Mick Thomson uses Powered By Omega now. Though I can't stand Lipsnot, the Omega equipment is top notch!!!
Dude! You’re hilarious! When you came out with the Crate at number 3 I friggin’ died! 😂
🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣
Now as you know, I like to play in a lot of Open Jams. Most play Blues.I leave my amps at home because amps are already provided. But if it comes down to bring my own amp to the Jams, which one of these amps would work for a Squier tele? I should add this too. I also play harmonica.Which one of these amps have a great sound if using a bullet?
I don’t know that any of these are going to be real popular for blues players. But if I had to pick one, the Diezel would probably be your best bet.
@@RobertWJackson There is a Blues Jam here in Greeley, Colorado I go to every Wednesday night.Boy do we get pretty loud.I think the Diezel would blow people out.
I have a Marshall 2253 25/50W Jubilee and with aTube Screamer in front it is fn Brutal! Almost as crunchy as my Mesa Boogie Mark V in Extreme Mode.
Really enjoyed all your amps videos ! I think it would be a great idea to do a list of 5 or 10 overpriced amps
Why no Dual - Triple Rec? That’s one of the best amps ever! If I could justify the money, I’d have one. I’d put it on top of a half stack and melt Oompa Loompas with it!
They're on the list.
Dave Wiese no I mean why doesn’t Robert like them?
@@GearGasms matter of taste
I’m not a real big Rectifier guy, though I do admit I go through hot and stretches with them. I don’t hate them by any means, but I do much prefer the Mark IV and Mark V models. I will say, however, that the Mesa Recto 4x12 is one of the best speaker cabs on the planet. More amp companies need to steal that page out of the Mesa playbook.
I have a Marshall MG100HCFX and I'm in love with it!
Agree about Corabi- Dead Daisies are great too!!!
What do you think about Glenn Hughes replacing John Corabi and Marco Mendoza in Dead Daisies?
Paul Von Tyrant has that happened or is it a what if? They’d have to split the money less ways, lol. Glenn Hughes is amazing but I’d worry about how many more years he can do what he does
@@GearGasms Since they've released a song at the end of August, I'd say it has happened.
LOL
I appreciate all of your knowledge.
Thanks man!
Totally agree with you on the self titled Crue album. What do you think about Friedman Amps?
*ENGL*
The Savage is aptly named, and while I don't prefer them to the Savage, the Fireball and Powerball are crushingly heavy as well.
I'll probably hate myself for mentioning this, but the Marshall JCM 900SL-X is essentially a single channel JCM 800 with an extra gain stage (that even has its own knob). Total sleeper, especially with a boost up front.
The JCM 900 SL-X is actually a Plexi with an extra gain stage. That’s what the SL-X means: Super Lead Extra.
Hey bro.
Thank you!
Yep, any of those that you mentioned, EVH 5150 III, Orange Rockerverb, Marshall JVM... There’s plenty of amps to choose from if you’ve got the budget.
@@RobertWJackson Thanka bro! Appreciate it. Looking at the Mark V Sigx, an ORANGE, Diezel Einstein or 5150., THANKS.
I ended up with it because the guy I bought from couldn't sell it because it was a bass amp and nobody would buy it
I played a JCM 800 bosted with a Rat for years.
How about a 1965 Sunn C-45 aka 200s amp matching 1x15 w/JBL-D140F. Pullman Tolex
Great video, dude. My only gripe is that most of these amps are sooooo expensive. Guess I'll have to wait a few years until I can afford one.
Not really. Some of these can be found for pretty reasonable prices.
Great video sir 👍
Very cool video... no Freidman amp but that's ok I'm sick of everyone fawning over Friedman lol

@@RobertWJackson yeah 90s and 2000s metal was basically a binary of choices, either the 5150 or the dual rec
LOL
Holy, $400! I was told my cad ud $1400 new. Nothing Diezel is cheap. Ever use the D Moll?
jaychen I’ve heard the D-Moll a few times, but I’ve never gotten to play through one myself.
Puhh... watched it till the end... happy to own a Herbert when I hear you talking about it like this😂😜😜👌🏼
I’d love to have a Herbert!
1st Gen Peavey vypyr for high gain aim Sim .

@@RobertWJackson Robert, great video today bro. Why no 6505 or 6505+??
joehervey84 great sounding amps, and I’d even go so far as to call the 5150/6505 Series one of the greatest sounding rock amps ever.
@@RobertWJackson ok fair enough. Ty
Thanks for doing this video.
It's amazing how many guys I know say that Orange amps can't do metal. At least the Rockerverb doesn't seem to do metal well.
Lots of heavy players use Orange so I was thrown off when I heard it mentioned that the RV barely does metal.
The Rockerverb doesn’t do metal? Since when? That’s been Jim Root’s amp for his entire career.
@@RobertWJackson That's been my experience and like you said, lots of metal guys use them successfully. Thanks bro! Appreciate it.
I had the opportunity to try this orange, and I was blown away. So if this diezel can beat that wow. I think the price has to be a part of the equation
That Diezel Herbert ain’t cheap dude. Head and cab together will run up around $6000 US.
Cool! Rivera Amps Rock!
Scared me, so GLAD you didn't mention the Gorilla amps LOL sorry had to !
